  1. 1. Should the Red Sox buy or sell at the trade deadline?

    • I'm a Red Sox fan and I think the Red Sox should SELL.
    • I'm a Red Sox fan and I think the Red Sox should BUY.
    • I'm a Red Sox fan and I'm undecided.
    • I'm a Yankees fan and/or I hate myself.

I'm trying to get a feel for what most Red Sox fans think we should do at this trade deadline. On one hand, our offense should get a significant boost from last year's AL MVP runner up returning. On the other hand, no one who's started more than five games for us has an ERA under 4.41. It would take some significant upgrades to our starting pitching or some kind of miracle run to even get to the World Series.

Sell. There are too many players leaving in 2012/2013 that aren't a big part of this team's future, and they'd be worth a ton to other teams.

In order to win the division, the Red Sox will need to go 47-26, with a .643 winning percentage, and the Yankees wil have to go 37-37. So the Yankees will have to collapse, the Red Sox will need to turn into complete juggernauts, and the Orioles, Blue Jays, and Rays will all need to wilt and disappear... except in AL East games.

It just doesn't make sense to risk all those beautiful trading chips for a winner take all 1 on 1 matchup with 2012 AL Cy Young Winner, Jared Weaver.

1. There are 8 teams within 2 games of an AL Wild Card spot.

2. A team's best pitcher is often used to get to a one game playoff spot.

I don't disagree with the rest of your post, but there's a very good chance that we would not be facing Weaver if we were to get to a one game playoff.

The Angels started off slowly, but they're in a very weak division, and are likely going to be able to run away with it because they don't need to fight tooth and nail with three other contenders to get the spot. They'll be able to line up their rotation perfectly. They're also very active at the deadline, and could end up with Hamels/Greinke.

Take your pick. Weaver, Haren, Wilson, Hamels. Its not a good matchup for the red sox.

If they don't get Garza or Felix, they will have a hard time making the playoffs with their pitching and management problems. The trade deadline will be another test for the front office.

I think there are much better reasons to say that we should sell than not liking one of dozens of plausible pitching match ups in a one game playoff.

And Boston don't have Lester Bucholz and Beckett they been bad OK we all know that but it's a one game playoff anything can happen. That's if we win one of the wildcard spots and I expect Lester to be much better this time around. And we all know when Lester on he's an elite pitcher and can shut down any offense. Buyers.

I think we're too close to contention to be sellers... Odds of us winning a championship this year? Eh... But I think we could make a run into Oct... Not the way we're playing, but we seem to be hanging in there just enough to make things interesting...

Right now, we're 1.5 games out of Second place in the AL East (I don't see us catching the yanks) and 1.5 games out of securing a wildcard spot. Once you're in, its a new season.

It comes down to pitching though.... Lester, Buch, Beckett, we need at least 2 of these guys to pull it together... And maybe secure another solid starter...
