Beckett gets points from me for this:

But Beckett had a valid excuse this time. A bout with the flu left him feeling weaker than normal and he was dizzy from taking antibiotics to fight the illness.

“I think it zapped me. It took me a long time to gather myself between pitches,” Beckett said. “In between pitches, it was borderline blackout periods.”

But Beckett persevered, going six innings and not allowing another run as the Red Sox rallied to beat the Rays, 7-3.

A .694 OPS is absolutely god-awful from anyone in any part of the lineup. Pedroia was the only one hitting. All he had to do was produce and he'd have been hitting 2nd. He didn't.

I already said I fully expect him to be the guy we signed him to be, but I can't make excuses for him letting everyone down last year.

I'm not making excuses. I'm just saying it's not entirely on him. Let's see what he can do when he's got a manager who shows confidence in him.

that's such crap, Francona had nothing to do with Crawford s***ing the bed. The guy bitches about hitting anywhere other than the 2 hole.

Yeah. It's complete crap that players need a comfort level, and that a brand new city in a big contract doesn't weigh at all on a player.

Ok man. Sure. Crawford needed to find a comfort level and have a manager who showed confidence in him. Francona was excellent at showing confidence in his players, almost to a fault, with Pedroia, Ortiz, etc. And it always paid off. He gave up awfully early on Crawford.

I'm sorry you don't understand the concept of consistency and comfort at the plate. Crawford said it himself, he was bottled up behind the big boys and didn't feel like he was able to play his game, getting hits and using his legs to score runs. Instead, he came out of his game and tried to hit homeruns. When a player is being brutally honest, you should listen sometimes.
