I would give up Lavarnway + 1 of the 3 (probably Barnes) for Hamels if we got a negotiating window in the deal.

Hamels

Lester

Beckett

Buchholz

Doubront/Morales

That would be an unbelievable rotation.

Again, why does Philly let go of Hamels? They just can't afford him? He's already making $15 million or so. Their payroll is as high as ours. They're paying Paps $12.5 million. Halladay is hurt and Lee is having a rough streak.

I would not give up Barnes. Maybe Buchholz. No way on Barnes. and if you want to give away Barnes make them eat a contract from the Red Sox or half of it (Crawford or Lackey). Probably Lackey as he has 2 year and 30M after this year.

Because most likely they're done. No playoff. No words on Howards in returning, probably unlikely this year.

Philly is above NL average in offense, without Howard and Utley. They are below NL average in pitching, with Hamels. They need offense more than they need Hamels?

They're 9 games out in a tough division with two of their heavy hitters out and their best starter out up to 8 weeks. Philly isnt going anywhere. They have a ton of money locked up in pitching already and Hamels is going to command a huge pay day. Add the fact that the phillies are older and on the downside of their dominant run with the money Hamels is gonna be making, I say that they'll be more than open to dishing him for a bundle of prospects.

The question is... would you give up two of the following for one of those arms: Lavarnway, Bogaerts, Bradley, Barnes?

My answer would be no.

Not as a rental, no. I would want the pitcher we get to be on our team for at least three years (or two and a half, actually). No handing away our top prospects for rentals.

Most significant is the degree that the games hinge more and more on starting pitching as the season grinds on....to the point where even powerhouse offenses simply get controlled by the better pitchers in baseball....you see it time and time again, year in and year out.

We have had our SP for the bulk of the season. They have not suffered catastrophic season ending injuries to the mainstays of the rotation. We do know what they have though and like it or not....it just ain't enough.

As someone who lives in Kansas City and got to see Greinke come up with KC, I'm not too sure he'll be a good fit in Boston. Not because of a lack of talent, but because he's definitely an introvert. Almost in a sling blade kind of way. I haven't followed him since he went to the Brewhaha but if he's still the shy quiet kid the Boston media will destroy him. I've seen him pitch a couple times at Kaufman, and I'd love him on the Sox but I hope he's ready if it happens.

I really want Greinke.

Hopefully he can handle some media. Odds of actually acquiring him? Red Sox need SP either now or in the offseason. Question to the FO is, are we going to the playoffs this year or not?? w/Orioles falling to earth and TB struggling... it's just up the Sox to win & Yanks to lose some to take this division. I have faith in my BoSox.

Also, ESPN reports Buchholz "likely out till ASB" -- holy f***ing s*** this team is PLAGUED!!

Morales is about to show Red Sox Nation he is still a star and the once #8 prospect just doesn't go to the BP w/o a fight!!

... left-hander Franklin Morales scheduled to open the four-game series in Seattle on Thursday night
-- so excited to watch this. thank goodness i got the day off.

Lessons from today's game:

1) In game threads can be insane, moody, and just plain weird.

2) Laffey stuck it to us and pitched a great game, jeez, give the guy some credit. He had it going today.

3) WMB is still an unproven commodity, especially on defense, let's not put him in the HOF quite yet.

4) Dice-K works best when he works quickly and changes speeds.

5) We got nothing in return for Youk in Mr. Lillibridge.

6) Our manager likes to start our subs and then bring our best players off the bench in the late innings just to confuse the opposition, thus creating a new style of game play called "V Ball." Jackass.

V loves his righty vs. lefty matchups every bit as much as Tito...maybe more!

I know he had some anxiety issues. I have a feeling the boston media would slaughter him.

Sucks to think such a skilled individual playing a professional sport can't handle the pressure of a big city team. Sure is a crutch.

Though honestly, what are the odds of Boston really getting this guy?? We go after big name bats, not pitchers.

With all of the big arms that are going to be available this year. I definately see us coming away with one of them. Just a matter of who.

Now that Salty has finally settled in to a level of understandable and reliable performance I think Lavs might be the most expendable of the prospects on that list. He might be the most attractive as well at least for a team that wants a short leash to seeing the player on a ML roster.

Plus there are reasons for Salty being where he is now. It is not like we have to say "well he just finally came around". You can point to specific differences in how he approaches both his hitting and his fielding.

So I would be OK with the Sox building something around Lavs to get a real deal front line pitcher. However giving up prospects for a 1 year rental does nothing for me. So that have to get itself worked out as part of the deal if the guy is on the last year of his deal.

I agree 100%. I think Salty can stick here as the starting catcher. His OBP is a tad less than average for catchers but he's slugging .544 and is one of the top offensive backstops in baseball. His defense is bearable at the least and the pitchers seem to like throwing to him from what I've heard. I think those of us who gave the kid a chance are starting to see some return on our investment of faith into Salty's abilities.

If we can Lavs as the centerpiece in a deal for a starter, I'm on board.

Lavs isnt a big upgrade over Salty. I do think an defensive minded backstop would help your staff, but neither of those guys are defensive minded backstops. You go with the one that is producing

We do have Kelly though.

I fully expect the Sox to deal Lavarnway in a deal for a high caliber SP (Garza?). A deal of Lavarnway + Bard would definitely start it out.

Buster Olney was on EEI today and said that Theo, Hoyer and the Cubs would be interested in Bard, and wouldn't be swayed by his poor year this year because of his track record.
