Business as usual for the media. Not business as usual for the underachieving Red Sox.

They're playing good ball right now--sparked by those Pawtucket kids who have bred some life into this team.

The best teams always have a mix of youth and veterans.

The Sox came into this season with a whole lot of veterans, and zero youth outside of Doubront.

I agree the youth factor was missing. Too bad the FO missed it.

Maybe Ortiz and the rest should stop talking to them.

There is little to write about when everyone is saying "no comment".

I sure hope the FO sees what we are seeing too. There is no way they can send down Middlebrooks, Nava, or Kalish right now or even when Ellsbury and Crawford come back. Those kids bring enthusiasm to the clubhouse. Contrast them with the fat cats who take up roster spots and contribute little: Gonzalez, Youkilis, and yes, Pedroia. I would like to see Lavarnway up pretty soon too, though I am not sure where to put him.

One disturbing aspect about this thing with Papi is that there is the very strong possibility that this is all about his desire to have a longer commitment in the form of a contract which he probably could have had at the right price. Can't have max dollars and term at the same time.

Papi has an agent. They could have negotiated. This always looked like a situation where Papi and his agent left the Sox to negotiate with themselves. Both sides erred I think....the result being arbitration.

Now he has max dollars and is still not happy. If he had $20M over two years from the Sox would he still not be happy because it is not $14 per over two years for a total of $28M?

The money has totally gone to these guys heads in my view and none of them seem to be happy anymore. I am not restricting this to Sox players at all.

A question about his contract for next year is what set him off....so a very sore point with him. When he comes out with his ugly face on, he is not going to hit at all. Watch him. If he is the stereotypical Papi with the big grin, he will do well, but if something pissed him off, it shows in his face and in his hitting. He is that transparent.

Even Remy, the voice of the Red Sox, comment several times that he and Orsillo were puzzled since he was in such a jovial mood Wed night after the GS and then switched his mood so fast the next day. Just saying ... mood swings that strong cannot be good.

Memo to media from the opposing team: Ask Ortiz about his contract:o

Looking likely that he'll walk at the end of the year..

Not so sure about that. The FO is going to do everything in their power to keep him and have him retire as a member of the Red Sox. He said that as well last year and he came back. He is frustrated with the media, not so much the team. If he starts saying that about the actual team, then I think we can be concerned.

If he ignored the question that pissed him off yesterday, then there would not be a zillion stories about him today....

Winning will solve much of these issues.... I was hoping they'd come out of the gate strong w/ a chip on their shoulder to move on from Sept 2011. But they've been playing good ball as of late. The hitting has been good. You really can't ask for much more. Even w/ Outfield injuries, the guys filling in have really stepped it up. The bullpen has been solid as of late too, and when we get Bard back up and Baily, it should be pretty impressive. Starting rotation has been spotty, and its hard to really zero in on the issue. But I'm looking at our run differential and it doesn't align with our current W-L standing.

I think Papi will be back. I think they'll work something out. He continues to play like this, he'll get a 2 maybe even 3 yr deal. I think all these guys are over paid, but look at it from his perspective... He's looking at a guy like Lackey, or a guy like Crawford, both of which haven't contributed anything this year, or really at all in their boston career, and they're making much more than him.

Pedroia? Seriously?

And I think papi wants to return, he's just making sure the FO doesn't take him for granted. I'd like to see him stay even if they have to overpay him.
