Yup. Do you consider Teixeira to be a "great hitter"? How about Bobby Abreu? Or Nomar? Or Tim Salmon? All those guys have a career OPS either better than Gonzalez or very close to him.

I think that Gonzalez is a good hitter who is crap for us this year. Depends on how you define "great". Albert Pujols is a great hitter. So were Ted Williams and Barry Bonds. And Manny and McGuire. Gonzalez is good when he is hitting the ball; not great, no.

Really? You're going with OPS when Gonzo played the majority of his career in one of the most power suppressing divisions and stadiums. That's a ridiculous comment.

Gonzo's OPS+ of 138.

Nomar's OPS+ while in Boston was 132. I'd say Nomar in Boston was a pretty damn good hitter.

Very encouraged by how hard the Sox have been working at the plate in last few games and how patient they have been....very discouraged that they are getting better pitches to hit and doing nothing with them....up and down the lineup.

They are all trying to hit 5 run homers

His OPS is .008 better at Fenway. Insignificant.

Also, Nomar played at Fenway, but some of the others on my list did not. McGuire played in a cavernous park. Bonds played in a big park too. And no matter where they played, half their games were away games. Sorry. I don't think Gonzalez is a great hitter. He can be good (B-B+); not a grade A hitter. Ever.

Just got back. Sox have played the Marlins 1-1 since I left. I guess that's sort of progress... (let me have my delusion)

Yeah, and if they can just do that for the rest of the season we can all focus on football in October. :D

Quick run down from what I am seeing:

Pedroia maybe coming around...to early to tell

Ortiz....really pressing....now I am starting to worry but would stop if David stops pressing

Agons....at least more patient at the plate but doing very little with good pitches to hit

Salty.....pitchers seems to be adjusting to what he has been doing for the last month as far as his approach to plate appearances....might be time for the Salty slide of last year

Aviles....trying to hard to pull the ball

Sweeney...OK but overmatched a lot lately

Youk....kinda' the RH version of Agons lately with even less power

Pods....not bad for a sub but mostly overmatched by the pitchers we have faced

 It is progress. But still 4-1.

Don't lose it now Josh, dammit!

That is very true Elk...been that way for awhile now, as in more than one game

His OPS in his first season at Fenway was .957. He's been mediocre this year, saying he can't be a great hitter, ever, feels a bit hollow with him having been a great hitter just one season ago.

Let me rephrase that then. He is not now a great hitter. I cannot predict the future. He could eventually become one, or he could become ordinary as well. Last year, taken out of the context of his career, was a great year, yes.

Not me. I don't really like football much. I grew up a Giants fan. I'm in Connecticut and my first year caring about sports was 1986, when I was 7. So I picked the Giants since they were good and my father picked the Red Sox for me because he was a good father.

Anyway, even with the success the Giants have had in the last decade, I just can't seem to care all that much. I watched the Superbowl last year and gave a half hearted cheer when the game ended, but I spent more time thinking about pitchers and catchers reporting than I did about the game that night.

I'm faithful to one, and only one, cruel mistress... her name is Baseball.

That's more fair. He certainly has not been a great (or even very good) hitter this year.

You've got pretty high standards then.

Over his past 5 seasons (4 of which were with the Padres), he's hit .295 with a .907 OPS (147 OPS+), and averaged 33 HR, 37 2B, and 107 RBI.

Too bad about that. The Giants have a very good team. As do the Patriots. I think the Patriots have the quintessentially well run organization. No loudmouths doing a lot of talking. Winning seasons every year. Fun to watch. They run a very tight ship; very professional.

What excuses are people going to make tonight? The Marlins have been even colder than the Red Sox going into tonight's game. It looks like our boys are hell bent on reviving the Marlins.

Even if we lose this game we actually win it according to the pythagoran OP + UPS/UZR =OU812 statistic.

So at least we got that going for us. Thank God.

Yeah. People who understand stats are stupid.

I do have high standards when it comes to calling a player "great". Gonzalez's career OPS is a tad under .880. The immortal Tim Salmon, who played in a cavern incidentally, had a career OPS of .884. Bobby Abreu is not a "great" hitter IMO; his career OPS was .876. Teixeira has a career OPS of .900, better than Gonzalez. Is he "great"? He is closer than Gonzalez. For me, to be great your OPS is over .900.

Top of the 8th, pitchers spot up first.

Hmm... I have Middlebrooks and Punto, and there's virtually no chance that the P spot gets back up...

Yeah Punto sounds good.

Idiotic move, V.

No excuses from me. Just perplexed bafflement and sadness if we lose again.

I thought Pedey was safe at 1st there. Guess it was close enough.

The problem with your argument is that you assume all parks are equal.
