I think it's safe to say that whatever the Red Sox said in March, they didn't expect to be in fourth place and 9 games out of first place.

And by the way, Breslow is definitely not a lefty specialist. His numbers this year, his numbers last year and is career numbers are all better vs. righties than lefties.

Please provide a link to an article of anyone in the FO saying this?

 I was paraphrasing the qoutes from SFF's post.

Red Sox FO in January: "We traded Scutaro because we want some flexibility, not necessarily right now, but at the trade deadline as well."

Red Sox FO in July: "We didn't feel that we needed to do anything and didn't want to take on additional salary."

Ugh.

Mullen tweeted the Sox "brain"trust had a meeting in V's office last night. They decided that Crawford's every 4th game rest (which fell in the middle of the Yankee series) should be changed to rest when needed. Gee, what a brilliant decision. Wonder how much that episode hurt their trade credibility near the deadline.

The media has suddenly gotten very quiet about the Red Sox. Not much on MLB TV about them. They seem to be getting the KC Royals treatment.

My bad, was actually gonna ask SFF the same thing but I had read the quote on my phone earlier in the day and wasn't logged in.

But the point is no one ever made that comment. Trading Scutaro, whether we like it or not was to get under the luxury tax, I don't think there was any indication that that money was going to be allocated elsewhere in the future.

Too bad they had to let Pods go. I prefer him over Crawford or Sweeney. They should cut Sweeney ASAP.

Crawford will be on waivers soon. If the guy doesn't start stealing bases, he should be benched. He's not good for much else.

Someone said they are still in a cost control mode. I believe Henry cut the money off for the whole year--not just the pre-season. They were dumping salary or holding the line up to the deadline--not taking it on.

Winning ballgames is the only cure for that.

V was foolishly non-commital, but Breslow allows Morales to start. That was the purpose of the deal.

Looking at the contending teams and the players they acquired during the season prior to the deadline:

Yankees: Ichiro, McGehee

Orioles: Thome

Tampa: Roberts

White Sox: Liriano, Myers, Youkilis

Tigers: Infante, Sanchez

Rangers: Dempster, Soto, Oswalt

Angels: Greinke

Oakland: Kottaras, Inge

Nationals: None

Braves: johnson, Maholm, Sheets, Batista

Reds: Broxton

Pirates: Gaby Sanchez, Wandy Rodriguez, Snider, Quals

St. Louis: Mujica

Giants: Pence, Scutaro

Dodgers: Victorino, HanRam, League, Choate

Arizona: Chris johnson

The 5 teams that will be fighting us for playoff spots: Yankees (not really in a fight), White Sox, Tigers, Angels, and Texas have really improved themselves. The A's are also fighting us, but didn't add much.

The Yankees didn't 'really improve', on paper anyway. They added a guy with a .642 OPS and a guy with a .676 OPS. They added 2 guys who are hitting well below MLB average this year.

Hey guys, I just got back from a Craig Breslow celebration party, as I'm sure you all did. I was really glad to see that the Sox won a rain out game tonight. Anyone else buy the jersey yet? I totally did. I actually took the numbers off my Youkilis jersey and replaced it with an authentic-ish Breslow.

Last day before the Trade Deadline is awesome. Should be a national holiday, especially in Sox nation where we always get special treats!!

I'm not sure I will be able to sleep tonight with visions of Breslow dancing in my head...

At this point the roadblock to Iggy is not Aviles but Ciriaco. Lets face it, if the Sox were willing to take Aviles butchery at SS for his hitting they sure as hell will take the combination of defense and hitting that Ciriaco brings to the table. At least there is some rational for a Ciriaco road block. He looks very smooth around SS even though he has mostly been playing 2nd in the minors.

I think for some here, seeing how smooth and graceful Ciriaco was around SS finally gave them some comparative input to use in their analysis of Aviles at SS although if you were looking for the right things, Aviles issues at SS were there to see from day 1.

I would still like to see Iggy here for the later part of the season and I think we will. Ciriaco is such a versatile player he can play elsewhere.

There should be no doubt that it is a joy seeing Ciriaco out there but I don't want anything to do with seeing Iggy out there. Send him to the national league where he might have some strategic value. The guy simply can't hit.

Doesn't sound like the Yankees did much of anything either which is strange considering they're actually a contending team.

They got McGahee for a waiver wire player.

I predicted months ago that we will never see Iggy in a Sox uniform for any significant length of time. I just want to see him play for whatever period I can and when Ciriaco falls off (notice I said when not if) then with the late season roster moves, Iggy will likely be here and likely give us our last opportunity to see him in a Sox uniform.

Wow! It took me decades to get so bitter and sarcastic.;). I like the less saccharine version of E1 that is no longer convinced that the FO is not full of soaring intellects and geniuses. They are full of something, but it is not genius.

As seen during the draft, the FO looks like a bunch of 30ish preppies.

You will never see Iggy for long periods of time because he can't hit.

Reddick couldn't hit, either.

Besides, he plays all-star SS defensively. What counts. Let Papi do the hitting.

Too bad those FO guys never heard of roles and team play.

wow redsox has become a media joke and i see it why.. it starts at the top..

The weird Crawford "rest day" in the middle of the Yankee series was the topper. That was an indicator to baseball people the Red Sox had serious organizational problems. They have disappeared off MLB TV.

So the FO doesn't add a starting pitcher at the deadline, and in the first 2 games after the deadline expires, Beckett gets hurt and Cook gets torched. Gotta love this 2012 season.
Posted
We need starting pitching. Could he be worse than Cook?

2012 numbers

Cook: 5.24 era, 84 era+, 1.21 whip, .787 ops against, .249 babip

Lowe: 5.52 era, 70 era+, 1.69 whip, .819 ops against, .335 babip

So, er, yes, Lowe could certainly be worse than Cook....who is terrible.

When I first heard that Lowe had been DFA, I thought, definitely the Sox should grab him. Then I looked up his stats. The last 2 years he's been pretty awful. Sad to say, I don't think he'd be an upgrade over Cook.

But hey, since he's one of the 25, I'd still prefer him over Cook....just not sure he'd be much help.

I am not saying that Iggy should not be on a ML team, far from it, just that he won't be on a Red Sox ML team. Funny thing about that is that this FO and management has already f***ed this team four ways from Sunday with misfit players like Crawford, the biggest misfit player of them all on this team. However, put a quasi-hitting utility infielder that could not field the position to save his skin at SS (Aviles) and the Sox are all in on that one. Stupid.....this organization is f***ed from top to bottom and it hardly matters what they do this year. They are still f***ed from top to bottom.

At least Ciriaco fields the position and certainly can hit. But I don't trust the Sox on this turf toe business with Aviles. I think they are hoping that we forget that they purposefully brought Aviles in here and will quietly move him out while we are not looking. What an amazing bunch we have tied our hopes to.....lying....thieving.....carpetbagging, scalawags. Those are the guys that should be booed. The whole damn park should turn their eyes up to the owners box and boo their asses off.
