They have Pence and Victorino in their OF where would both Ross and Nava fit on the Phillies?

John Mayberry: .233/.270/.392 6 HR, 23 rbi, 9 bb, 55 SO in 70 GP

Cody Ross: .276/.344/.571 11 HR, 38 rbi, 16 bb, 45 SO in 45 GP

Ross is clearly the better player.

Give them Nava as replacement value cause Juan Pierre is near the end of the line. Sure maybe Nava goes to Leigh Valley but they could use him eventually.

In all fairness, Victorino and Pence are free agents in 2013 and 2014 respectively, and Juan Pierre patrols left right now, and could probably be replaced.

That being said, Ross and Nava are not the trade pieces for the Phillies. If they're looking for a new outfielder, Kalish would probably be the best fit for them. I wonder if Ryan Kalish + Ranaudo would get the deal done? That seems almost palatable for me, and they get a decent return for the rental, but probably not enough.

Greinke, guys, Greinke.

He's a mature guy who is in baseball for the long haul. He went to the NLDS. He can handle Boston.

Hamels & Lee are unlikely. I doubt Philly is calling it quits.

Get Greinke!!

I doubt Phillie is going to want a 29 year old nonprospect and an outfielder in his early 30's on a 1 year deal for Hamels, especially when them trading cole would lead most people to believe that they were giving up on the season.

I prefer garza. I like Zach, his anxiety issues just have me tentative.

They improve offensively, get younger and grab two decent prospects plus cash. For a guy they're only going to get a couple more months out of anyway. Im not saying its a slam dunk, my point was there is a deal that can be made for Hamels, he isn't untouchable

re: All the Hamels not available talk...everyone's available for the right price. I think for a guy still on the right side of 30 like Hamels though, a premium would have to be paid...but he's one of the few guys I'd have no issue parting with a guy like Ranaudo or even a Brentz (last resort) if it sweetened the pot. With CC and Pettitte out, and our injuries healing up, we can gain some serious ground.

A couple years ago the Sox were inquiring about him when he was on the trade block with KC.

They backed off when it was decided he didn't have the psyche to play in this market.

No thanks, stay away.

He's older now. More experienced.

Rangers are in the mix for Greinke. If they get him and win the WS w/him then we'll all be bitching how we should have got him.

Oh but wait, there is no pressure to perform in Texas where they lost the WS two years running.

That does not change who you are.

Experience has nothing to do with affecting your psyche.

He is great in KC, he is great in MIL......he will be a basket case in Boston.

Coming from someone who studied it, he has no shot in Boston.

Rangers getting him and winning the world series has nothing to do with the fact that he would fail in Boston.

It can sort of change who you are. I am not the same person I was at 14. Or even four years ago. He's also learned to deal w/more pressure, i.e. NLDS.

But thank you, God, for you're all knowing wisdom: "he WILL be a basket case" "he has NO shot..."

It's saying s*** like that, believing s*** like that, that makes it worse makes it true. Mental thought can literally change the physical and metaphysical world around you.

But okay, Greinke sucks, right? So let's go get Garza the guy that can't control his emotions. The ump will say ball four when its clearly strike three and Garza loses his s*** and cant find the K zone again. Lester 2.0.

I mean, any pitcher has their problems. All players have their problems.

Ortiz is old and washed up but yet leading this team in all aspects. Things change. People wow you. I like the risk with the high upside on Greinke.

Honestly, I think Greinke would work out great for us. But, I don't think Cherryington will go after him. Maybe we'll get someone. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this team is scrambling for a pitcher on the deadline and end up with nothing.

Off topic: if Lackey dies mysteriously do we still owe his family the $$?

If they dealt Hamels, they'd get a humongous package of players, probably 4 deep with 2-3 of them being top 100 prospects. If the sox were to get Hamels, you'd be dealing Bradley, Barnes, and Ranaudo and maybe even a guy like Brentz. It would be a system restocking trade.

If that ever happened, Cherington would first have to change his last name to Dover, then leave town forever.

Its a three month rental-- no team is going to be stupid enough to trade 3 top 100 prospects for him. That kind of haul goes to elite pitchers with already established long term contracts. 3 months is not worth 3 players who will be part of a team's future.

Rentals rarely fetch blue chip prospects. It is likely that these rentals will get a package of ! And 9 type prospects. I asked the question the other day, but no one responded. I am interested in. knowing when there has been a trading deadline trade and sign of a player in his walk year. I can't remember any. I think it would be silly for a star pitcher to sign at the trading deadline when there are only a few months to go to free agency.

why get Hammels if we can get him at FA. why loose 3-4 good prospects for that.

we have a 6 man rotation once Beckett and Buch return, i dont think its worth it to loose 4 prospects and get Hammels for this year.

I didn't know Hamels still have 4 control years left.

I think Hamels is arb eligible for 2013 but not a FA till 2014. I think Garza's deal goes through 2013 and he is also a FA in 2014.

I have not seen any Dempster references of late but he is a FA in 2013.

Didn't you know? There's a Top 2 Prospect surcharge on any deal that the Red Sox make according to Jackso. I've even come up with a formula for it.

Jackso's Required Return on Trade for Player X = Actual Return + Bradley/Barnes* + Brentz/Lavarnway**.

* Note: If Actual Return includes one of these two, the other is automatically included.

**Note: If either of these two is already included in the deal, the Red Sox don't have the talent to get a deal done.

Good stuff SFF.

It's true. Sox system is so weak that only all-star ceiling players can be included in any deal for a known entity... hell, last week Jacko would have claimed that the Sox would need to part with Barnes and Boegarts for an established utility guy like Lillibridge.

Pretty funny.

Gotta keep in mind Jacko's function here: in every way possible get under the skin of and attempt to demoralize Red Sox fans across the country and beyond.

However, in order for us to accept that kind of agitation, it will cost the Yankees Sanchez, Banuelos, and Betances being sent to the Sox.
