Here are the numbers I have for the 2012 payroll for luxury tax purposes. This is before the Marlon Byrd transaction. The benefits and bonuses numbers come from Alex Speier of WEEI. According to these numbers we are about $9 million over the $178 million luxury tax threshold.

1 Gonzalez 22.00

2 Crawford 20.29

3 Beckett 17.00

4 Lackey 16.50

5 Ortiz 14.58

6 Youkilis 10.31

7 Matsuzaka 8.67

8 Ellsbury 8.05

9 Buchholz 7.38

10 Pedroia 6.80

11 Lester 6.00

12 Jenks 6.00

13 Bailey 3.90

14 Ross 3.00

15 Salty 2.50

16 Iglesias 2.06

17 Sweeney 1.75

18 Bard 1.61

19 Punto 1.50

20 Shoppach 1.35

21 Aceves 1.28

22 Aviles 1.20

23 Albers 1.05

24 Miller 1.04

25 Morales 0.85

25 man total 166.67

there should be a pact somewhere that if you dont play a single game you dont get any money for that year. everything else for that player is covered.

I am sure they have Lackey's salary covered by insurance. Their goal was to set themselves up to stay under the cap for next yr. They are going to be right near it by the skin of their teeth

that begs the question except Ortiz how many more are coming up for end of term with Redsox. i know Jenks is and Dice-k too correct me if i am wrong.

If the current total is 187.17, when (because supposedly it will exercise before the season's over) Lackey's option becomes viable and the relative savings from the Byrd trade, they would actually end up around 183 million.

Reason #102 why they should try to trade Youkilis for low-cost pitching,

Yeah but the insurance does not help against LT backlash. That's what they're trying to avoid.

Pedroia only 6.80?! w/CC earning that kind of money we're going to lose all our best players to FA.

Pedroia took less because he loves the game and wants to help his team in every way possible. This is a quote directly from him after he signed his deal.

"What can't I do with $40 million that I could do with $100 million? At some point, you have to stop and say, 'Listen, I'm a regular human being.' Do I need a Bentley? Absolutely not. I don't care about those kinds of things. But does this set my family and my kids up forever? Absolutely."

Yeah, how are the yankoffs doing with the salary cap?

There has never been a human being with more class.

I really think the Sox have been angling to get back under just in the nick of time. The cost for not doing so is just to great especially in these next couple years.

Yes, the threshold is going to increase to $189 million but the penalties for going over the threshold will be so steep that it will be close to being a salary cap.

I think it's ironic that even Red Sox fans fuss about the payroll. I thought that stuff was left for only Royals and Pirates fans. With all the money being spent on Craford and Gonzo...how are they doing so far? Are they earning it in your opinion?
