Well Detroit is a monster hitting team...their defense is weak much like ours...and once you get past JV their starting pitching is not much. The difference is that while we have good hitting especially 1-5....maybe 1-6, they have Godzilla and Mothra in their lineup and very solid pieces around them. We could not get Jackson out in three days. So the table setters are getting on and the big bats are bringing them in...Avila is filling his role behind Godzilla and Mothra. So they are a great great hitting team that will without doubt represent the Central unless they get clobbered by injuries.

But they are not a great pitching team and they are lax defensively. Will win a good many games but may not get past the better pitching teams in the AL.

"Closers are overrated" "Closers are just relievers" "Papelbon didn't deserve that contract".

Yeah, Sure.

Aceves is not a closer you would trust. Hits batter, and uninspiring K/9 numbers. Same with Malencon. They could close for a team like the Astros or Padres. Just not here.

I don't think Aceves can close anywhere at least not like he is. That does not diminish his value in his customary role. Melancon....not sure about him. I am not sure what Melancon is. He has no control of his pitches from what I can see.

Doug Fister is a good pitcher. If he pitched in "Red Sox nation" we wouldn't be hearing the end of Fister. Just look at his stats last year. It was near the top of the league in most categories. The rotation is pretty solid.

Flukey 2nd half. He's nothing special.

He was pretty good in Seattle too. If the Red Sox would've acquired Fister instead of Bedard last year they likely wouldn't have had the most epic collapse in baseball history. Oh well.

Fister has a career FIP of 3.53. Verlander is a career 3.48 FIP. Verlander has a career whip of 1.19 and Fister is 1.17. Fister has a BB/9 of 1.69 and Verlander is 2.80. Fister is underrated.

A decent bullpen wins 2 of those games against the Tigers.

I'm livid at Cherington right now for putting this team in the situation it's in regarding the bullpen.

Bard needs to be the closer. Period.

Yup, Fister is just as good as Verlander.

Obviously.

Bard closing before we get back to Boston

Bard better be closing tomorrow night, and Aaron Cook better be on the hill on Tuesday. Otherwise, this team is going to keep giving blowing games.

A 30-35 loss bullpen is extremely feasible as constructed.

I think the Tigers could say the same thing. The Tigers bullpen blew the first save and gave up 5 runs this game.

I think thats the way Bobby wanted it all along, but Cherington put pressure on him to make Bard a starter to keep Bard happy. Let's move Bard to the pen and let him throw 100 mph 9 times and be done with it. We can obviously score enough to make up for a 4-5 of Doubie and Cook

Nice hyperbole. Apparently the stats are too hard for you to comprehend.

Wasn't that the point you were trying to make? They have similar stats so they must be equally good, right?

If I don't agree, it's not because numbers are hard. If that's the argument you want to resort to, go for it. I couldn't care less.

I think he's a fine middle of the rotation pitcher. Nothing overly special though.

When his numbers come back Earth this year, I won't be surprised.

Bravo!, Nothing more to say.

Well I was using their career numbers so those are "back to earth" numbers. Before Verlander had his dominate year last year, there wouldn't be much separation between Verlander and Fister. Verlander has the ability to throw a no hitter every time he takes the mound. Fister is going to get a lot of ground balls, no walks, and no home runs.

A guy like Fister would have been an excellent option for us (4-5). Instead, We brought an injury prone, and the rest is history.
Posted
And Fister has a better career K/BB ratio than all those pitchers.

what did Detroit give up for him?

But wait! They were great last year remember? Losing Papelbon and Bard to the rotation won't make a difference. They replaced them with Bailey and Melancon. They're all set!

Salty sucks....they have no SS....they have no bullpen....they were too cheap to pay Papelbon.......all for luxury tax? Go f*** yourself

We have no SS? Aviles did just fine today. He didn't lose the game. The bullpen did.

Casper Wells' date=' Charlie Furbush, Chance Ruffin, and Francisco Martinez. The only one of note is Martinez but the Tigers have Castellanos.[/quote']

I think we could make a decent pack as well, couldn't we?.... anyway, hopefully we right the ship.

Any idea who Toronto has got lined up for us? Hope one of them is Laffey. We could make a career hitting off of Laffey.
