Eck may be right if only because of the number of innings that Morales and Padilla pitched today. We may get Aceves tomorrow in the closers role like it or not.

Hell' date=' Just noticed that Aceves put INF @ WHIP and ERA in my fantasy team:lol:[/quote']

He's faced 5 batters.....HBP, 3 singles, HR.....he hasn't recorded an out.

The closer moniker is the most f***ing stupid s*** of any sports. God, I hate it. Bring in your best reliever of the team to get outs and you will win most of the time. Bring in marginal talents often you left scratching your heads. We got two marginal talents trying to get the final outs today. It's not because they're not "closers", they're just not very good.

I should bench him, I already had won at WHIP and ERA, dammit!:(

BTW ORS, you should have played in the fantasy contest, you are very good at stats.

Well that sounds easy...just bring in your best reliever to close. What the hell do you think the Sox thought Aceves was...chop liver? They sure as hell did not put Aceves in that spot because he was their most experienced closer. They don't have an experienced closer without Bailey. They thought putting their best reliever in the closer spot would give them the desired result.

In fact, truth be told this pitching staff is on thin ice from top to bottom.

The Sox have one solid, dependable starting pitcher, not three. They have one....Jon Lester. Beckett can't figure out whether he wants to go home and babysit or pitch. I think what he really wants is for somebody to pay him like a starting pitcher while he goes home to babysit. While I am stretching a point to make a point his focus has been wavering during recent seasons. Right when he really has needed to concentrate on making the transition from a guy with a big time heater to a guy that has to pitch instead of throw, his focus has really wavered. Maybe he is not interested in being a pitcher. Maybe he simply got off on blowing people away with the #1 and has lost interest since his days at 96 mph are behind him. I don't know. I just know he has not been the same guy. 2011 was a good year for Josh but ranked with other pitchers generally, Josh has fallen from the ranks of the very best pitchers in baseball.

Buch, as much as I like him, is injury prone. In fact he did not pitch that badly today. He did not pitch very well but he was not terrible either when you consider the Tiger's line up.

Do you really think the Sox are trying so hard to turn Bard into a starter because they think their starting pitching is set?

You have to have starters before you start to worry about the pen. As far as the pen goes, without Bailey there is not a real closer in the bunch.

Aceves does not appear to be able to match the intensity that hitters bring to the table in the 9th inning and still pitch. He is just throwing out there. He is not pitching!

Melancon so far has not been able to locate the ball and he does not have the stuff to get by without good location.

Albers will likely not even be a good reliever never mind a good closer and there is a whole bushel barrel of guys that are Albers with a different number on the back of their jerseys.

Morales is likely a decent left handed reliever but they sort of need him in that role.

Padilla is probably the right guy at this point. He is just crazy enough not to care. He is not going to let adrenaline go coursing through his body turning home plate into a launch pad. His stuff is good enough to get K's. As long as he is sound he will make his pitches, at least for some length of time. That might make for another vote for having him close. While we really don't know how many innings he can go, he sure as hell can go one at a time.

So while they are probably stuck for game 1 in Toronto, past that I would have Aceves and Padilla switch roles for now making Padilla the closer and putting Aceves back in the role he fits so well. As I see it because of necessity, Aceves gets one more shot at closing...the first game in Toronto. Unless he is really impressive, I would flip Aceves with Padilla at least for now.

They probably can't pitch Padilla tommorrow, since he threw 4 innings today. The smart thing would have been to let Padilla close out the game. But Bobby did what most managers would do these days--change pitchers in a closing situation. That turned out to be the wrong thing to do. Don't try to fix what ain't broke. Happens all the time.

They always seem to get into situations where they overuse Aceves. And they get burned for it. Right now, it looks like Padilla has to start and Bard has to close. They have to nail down the closing role right now or you can kiss the playoffs goodbye.

Andrew Bailey: He threw off the mound then was shut down from doing that. Now he he is building back up. From there, Bailey would need 8-10 innings in the minors, which will take 15-20 days. He may not be back until late August or September.
He'll make $4 million in 2012, and he'll probably make close to that in arbitration for 2013. What a bargain! Plus, we had to trade Reddick for him.

700 just so I understand....so Bailey was into his initial rehab program and pitching off the mound and had to stop and take a few steps backwards....is that what I am hearing?

Yes, as he was rehabbing from the thumb, his arm started to hurt. Who would have expected that?

Lets get Bailey healthy for next year. Take no chances with him this year.

Interesting the poll consensus was Bard should have been moved to closer. That's not what was done.

Instead, Bard is now in the minors trying to undo the damage of converting him to starter. You have to wonder about the judgement of the Red Sox front office. I hope Henry is tuned in.

At times, the fans know more. The other thing that was so ill-conceived about this conversion is that it should have been attempted in the minor leagues, not the major leagues. He had never had a start at AAA or AA on his way to the major leagues. What were they thinking when they put him on a major league mound to do something he had never done at any high professional level.

Reddick sucks.

He would have been just another piece of the AAAA OF rotation we currently have.

Sweeney has 14 career HR in 7 seasons. Reddick has 19 before the All Star Break. The kid has a live bat. I have been following him for years and seen him at several Spring Trainings. His problem is consistency. If he can manage to hit .260, that is all the consistency he'll need to be a regular .800 OPS starting OFer. He has that kind of juice in his bat.

Edit: he light years better than Sweeney who can't hit a HR in a telephone booth. Do you really want to put Reddick in the same category with Dmac or marlon Byrd?

Reddick's current OPS is about 120+ points higher than Pedroia and AGon. I don't think the kid sucks.

Reddick had 2 hits and a walk last night. I think SCM is trying to will him to suck. I've been trying that too but so far it isn't really working.
