When are they leaking the #5 spot?

I honestly think that putting Bard back in the pen is the best thing the sox could do. The guy is lights out for 1 inning and would give your team insurance should Melancon s*** the bed. Striving in Houston doesnt necessarily mean you're gonna do it here, especially when he relies on a breaking pitch as much as he does. Melancon-Bard-Bailey is a good finish to your pen. Not exactly Bard-Papelbon, but very good nonetheless. Neither Aceves nor Bard are great rotation options. I have a feeling both are in the pen by midseason and the sox acquire a mediocre innings eater to take the #5 spot

There is no need to name a 5 th starter until after the season begins. I for one wouldn't do so until it was absolutely necessary to do so. After all, stuffs happens that could affect the decision.

Bard named 5th starter, per Pete Abe and Nick Cafardo, among others.

I like this a lot. Lester Beckett Buchholz Doubie Bard. That's a solid 5.

Doesn't change my mind. I don't see the need to name a 5th starter now. But what is done is done. In any case, I don't think that 4 and 5 will be secure in those roles until after they have had several successful starts under their belts during the regual season.

Bard's potential in the rotation is higher than Aceves', and Aceves is more valuable in the bullpen due to the fact that he's not only effective, but he's capable of throwing multiple innings, so no, Bard back to the pen is not the best thing the Sox could do.

This is great news as spring training nears its end. Doubront making the rotation is big and could be a huge if he can perform effectively for the year.

Now, if the rotation can just stay healthy...

They can tell Aceves is that if he pitches well enough he might get a shot at closer sometime this year.

They won't reserve him for 1 inning exclusively.

Better than a shoulder or an elbow.
A thumb injury, depending on how severe can keep a pitcher out for an extended period. Bailey, at 40 innings like has averaged over the last few seasons, is not something that will be good for this team.

Awesome.

We had a s***** bullpen last year.....and its now 100% worse.

Andrew Bailey better f***ing perform, oh wait....hes already injured. Shocker.

Oh well.

I hate the move, I hated their offseason decisions (and lack of). I guess all I can do is just hope it works out.

Does anyone else realize how great our pen was last year until overuse set in? They were one our greatest strengths. People are jumping the gun on bailey, we don't know how serious it is yet. But hey, why be an optimistic and supportive fan of your team when you can take a steaming s*** on their chances before the season even starts?

3.57 ERA for the season, even with the s***** September.

Papelbon is in Philly and Bard is in the rotation. It's a drastically different and lesser pen for 2012.

Cherrypicking.

Julio Lugo was a GREAT baseball player on Wednesdays when it was 70 degress during August on the road in the west coast versus lefties who threw 88 Mph with runners on first and third with two outs when the count was in his favor.

The stats are what they are. No excuses.
