They copied the Yankees who named Jeter captain by naming Tek captain. I think naming a captain is really a formality. If you name a captain who isnt popular, nobody will listen to them anyway. This team had leadership issues late in the year and giving someone a C on their jersey doesnt change that

Pedroia is no doubt the best option for captain if we were to name a captain. He is a hard worker, a leader, and a good role model. However, it is not that important if this team does not have a captain.

I think if you have to have a captain, it needs to be an everyday player. Pitchers just don't have the same rhythm and are a distinct group. That said, they are on the team which is why having Tek as captain made sense because he worked closely with both groups.

DP doesn't have the same relationship, so while he's the best of the choices listed, I'd go with "no" if I was managing the Sox.

The poll should include those who think there should not be a captain. That would get as many votes as Pedroia.

The poll question was pretty clear. The point was to find out who people thought should be the captain if one was named.

I kind of got that, but I still didn't reply in case you added "no captain" as a poll choice. The thread title actually indicates that "captain" will be a yes or no question. Otherwise it needs to be "who should the Red Sox name". I'm not being nitpicky if it comes across that way, it's a good thread and a very legitimate question.

I think you can do two polls if you want. That might be a good idea, you could go back and edit one in. This way somebody in my shoes could both express their position, and at the same time give you the info you're looking for. My choice is no captain, but if I had to choose one player it would be Pedey.

This is the answer i was looking for. When i made the thread i was working under the assumption that most people don't want a new captain, so what i wanted was a "gun to my head, i choose this guy" response.

If i made another poll with the "no captain" option almost everyone would say no, and my actual question would go unanswered.

This one comes in from over the Green Monster. What about David Ortiz?? Ridiculously as that may sound to some of you his comments so far have been pretty positive for the most part and it would be a good way for him to go out in what is likely his last year with the Red Sox. He once was looked upon as a leader and maybe his persona could rub off on others. I don't think any player would want to tangle with him and sometimes extra responsibility pays dividends not readily seen at the time of such a promotion. Well, just thinking out loud since I really don't think we need or should have one.

Weren't you one of the crew calling him "Big Diva"? Lol

Pedroia: Kirk, circa TOS. Young, passionate, driven. Arrogant but likable, able to motivate his crew with nothing more than a penetrating glare

Gonzalez: Picard. Soft-spoken and diplomatic. Unwilling to use force unless pushed past the point where pretentious speeches and level-headedness will work. Surrounded by people who respect him but who wouldn't mind him shoving a photon torpedo down someone's throat every so often.

Youkilis: Sisko. Emotional. Short-tempered when things are going bad. Respectable and yet simultaneously unliked by those who do not know him extremely well. A great Captain in wartime.

Varitek: Archer. Chronologically the first Captain, much more lax when it comes to shipboard discipline. Still able to hold his crew together for many years, but could have been much more venerated had he been stricter in his enforcement of regulations. More friendly and open with subordinates. Started off strong and confident, and then dwindled into getting the s*** kicked out of him every other episode.

Lester: Pike. A good leader, a good man, but unless you're a really hardcore fan, what do you know about the guy beyond what he does when he pitches?

Bonus: JD Drew: Janeway. Lost, far from where he was supposed to be, completely unable to get his ship and crew to home until someone else intervened on his behalf. Teetering on the edge of incompetence and almost entirely unwatchable during the last season.

So my answer is no one.

Pedey seems the obvious choice, but I think they should drop the captain thing, at least for this year. Let the manager be the captain, have the players unified, and get on with it.

LOL. I will never look at the Red Sox the same again.

I too believe this ceremonial Captain s*** is useless. The poll question is quite clear. Of the options given, Pedroia is the choice.

Definitely Pedroia. Gonzo hasn't been here long enough, Youk is hurt too much, although Lester could've won 20 games if hadn't been for September. Pedroia is the heart and soul of this team though.
