Borderline HOF?

LOL.....he was a pretty good offensive catcher, thats it.....nothing more. He was a good catcher who played for a good team. If he played for the Pirates we wouldnt even be having this conversation.

If Mike Piazza isnt a HOF'er, Posadas name shouldnt even be mentioned......neither could play defense and Piazza was WORLDS better offensively.

Below average at his position, no 2000 hits, no 300 HRs.

Baseball Reference HOF monitor:

Gray Ink........................Batting - 17, Average HOFer ≈ 144

Hall of Fame Monitor......Batting - 98, Likely HOFer ≈ 100

Hall of Fame Standards..Batting - 40, Average HOFer ≈ 50

Good player. Not a HOF and its not close.

SCM, sorry, I was on an overnight and couldnt respond fully. Mike Piazza isnt a Hall of Famer yet because he isnt eligible yet. He'll be a first ballot HOFer for sure. There are 16 former catchers in the HOF. There is only one HOF level catcher way above Posada's league offensively as determined by OPS+ and that's Piazza. Look at this...

Posada 121

Campanella 124

Fisk 117

Carter 115

Ivan Rodriguez 110

Bench 126

Berra 125

Not too shabby. How about your standard accumulation metrics.

Posada's career line was .273/.374/.474, OPS of .848. 1664H, 275HR, 1065RBI, 900R

Bench .267/.342/.476, OPS of .818, 2048H 389HR 1376RBI 1091R

Berra .285/.348/.482, OPS of .830, 2150H 358HR 1430RBI 1175R

Bresnahan .279/.386/.377, OPS of .763, 1252H 26HR 530RBI 682R

Campanella .276/.360/.500, OPS of .860, 1161H 242HR 856RBI 627R

Carter .262/.335/.439, OPS of .774, 2092H 324HR 1225RBI 1025R

Cochrane .320/.419/.478, OPS of .897, 1652H 119HR 832RBI 1041R

Dickey .313/.382/.486, OPS of .868, 1969H 202HR 1209RBI 930R

Ewing .303/.351/.456, OPS of .807, 1129H 71HR 883RBI 1129R

Ferrell .281/.378/.363, OPS of .741, 1692H 28HR 734RBI 687R

Fisk .269/.341/.457, OPS of .798, 2356H 376HR 1330RBI 1276R

Hartnett .297/.370/.489, OPS of .859, 1912H 236HR 1179RBI 867R

Lombardi .306/.358/.460, OPS of .818, 1792H 190HR 990RBI 601R

Schalk- embarrassing selection, OPS career of .656

There are 3 Negro League catchers in the hall without numbers.

Looking at the list, Posada's OPS is higher than all of them aside from Harnett, Dickey, Campanella and Cochrane's. And aside from Cochrane, he is close to all of them. His OPS+ is in the same ballpark or higher than all of them aside from soon to be HOFer, Piazza. Posada would be 5th on this list (6th behind Piazza) in HRs as well. There is no doubt that from a numbers standpoint and postseason standpoint, he's a HOFer. It depends on whether they value the fact that he wasnt the best player at his position aside from one season (2007) and the fact that he was never a middle of the order hitter on this team.

Had Posada gotten 300 HR's and 2000 hits he would have been a shoo-in IMO. Hitting in the bottom third of the order for so long and not being very good defensively probably robbed him of enough AB's to make that an impossibility.

Nowadays, the advanced metrics are important and compared to their times, Posada is among the best in terms of offensive production. You could make a case that he was top 7 or 8 offensive catchers of all time

I personally don't think he will. Agree to disagree.

Just heard an interesting discussion on MLB radio. One HOF voter agrees with you that Posada is unlikely to get in.

I can't see how there's even a chance Posada goes to the Hall.

He was a good catcher and had the privilege to play on some epic Yankees teams. His career WAR (B-R.com) is good for 330th, right behind Jamie Moyer and Mike Cameron.

His career OPS+ of 121 is equal to that of Josh Willingham and his defense has always been below average.

You have to look at the position LS. At his position' date=' he was a top 10 offensive catcher of all time. That is indisputable[/quote']

If Edgar Martinez is not a HOF, Posada isnt either.

If the best DH ever cant get into the HOF, a catcher who couldnt catch and was "good" offensively shouldnt either.

Posada was top 10...Ill give you that, Martinez was the best DH in the history of the game. If DH's arent eligible for the HOF, then eliminate the position.

Its called the "Baseball Hall of Fame" not the "Baseball Hall of two way players/pitchers".

Last time I checked, a DH was a role within the sport, and he was the best ever at it.

If he dont get in, a good-hitting s***** defensive catcher shouldnt.

That fact that Posada played for the Yankees will give him a better chance of induction. Jacko makes a decent argument but I have to agree with UN on this. I don't see it happening.

I think Edgar should get in too, but the voters value guys who can play D, even if they do it poorly. Posada did play the hardest defensive position to play and was the key signal caller for 4 championships. It's not equivalent

Not that it counts for much, but Posada has been a very good citizen off the field. I do not recall all the details but I believe his little boy has suffered from some disease. Posada has been a very good Father and Husband. Not at all like the typical douche that we see in professional sports. I used to make fun of the guy because I though he was one goofy looking Motherf***er. Sort of like a Don Martin / Mad Magazine character. Overall, I have enjoyed watching him play. I like the way he played the game "the right way", even if it was for the Sox most formidable opponent. He has always been competitive and "clutch". It's hard not to admire the guy, really.

I think his son is autistic.
