2 yrs $14.5 mil with a third yr option. That's a pretty reasonable contract. I am surprised the sox didn't get in on that action.

Im not....dont you understand how important and how much detail is placed on finding a manager? Its a VERY long process and has to be done very carefully because a baseball manager is one of the most important aspects of a baseball team. They make very difficult decisions such as batting lineup, warming up pitchers and know the intricate details of the ever important "double switch"........they will search for a manager all offseason, and when they eventuall find one, there will be nobody left to sign....but it doesnt matter, as long as we have a guy who can put up 4 fingers to tell Lester to intentially walk Pujols.

How can the sox get in any action, their crack new GM is too busy researching managerial candidates.

Reasonable? 7 million a year, multi-year deal for a guy in his late 30s coming off two seasons of injury? I wanted to see Nathan here, but hell no to that price.

I'm sure it will start a firestorm, but I agree with you. I thought that price was much higher than what the Sox were looking for in a guy like Nathan. Hell, how much more would it cost to sign Madson, once the market dries up? Or Bell? Neither of those guys has injury concerns like Nathan.

Aggressive move by Texas, and I certainly like their all-bullpen, all-the-time approach, but that cost and years surprised me. No wonder he signed right away.

Exactly. No thank you to Nathan, not at that price. I would have been reluctant to give him a Jenks-type contract, much less $4mm over that.

I don't mind paying 8-10mm/year for a closer (no more than 3 years), but if we're going to pay that, make it a reliable closer (i.e. Heath Bell)

This drives up the price for KRod. It would be a nice move if we could get him cheap, but he might go for 4/40. I'd rather have Papelbon for the price which the Phillies signed him.

The Red Sox talked to Joe Nathan, but never made him an offer, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com. Boston was uncomfortable offering the closer a multiyear deal partly because he's 37.

Surprising. I immediately thought that it was because Ben was sitting on his thumbs instead of doing due diligence.

So wait, you guys were cool with a 1 yr deal at $7 mil to allow him to recoup his value, right? And he's coming off an injury that 90% of pitchers come back stronger from. And he finished out last yr strong enough to retake the closers role. So, if you signed him to a 1 yr deal and he had a typical Joe Nathan season, he'd command over $10 mil a yr after that. All signs point to Nathan having a good yr. and at this price, he'd be a bargain.

Joe Nathan isn't most relievers. He was' date=' prior to his injury, the best statistical reliever in the game from when he got to Minnesota.[/quote']But he is not that guy anymore. He's old and he's damaged.

He struggled out of the gate as most guys do coming back from TJS. But his #s in the second half were good. ERA was 3.91, which is marginal, but his other stats were impressive. 9K/9IP, WHIP of 1 and K/BB over 4. Plus his velo came back

Then why was his average velocity nearly two miles below what it was before surgery?

This is an asinine argument. None of us has a way of knowing how the guy will do next year. The Rangers were willing to go two years, but the Red Sox and other teams weren't. The results will speak for themselves.

I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised with Bard this year. A whole offseason to mentally prepare for the job could do wonders. Unless of course he becomes a starter, then I'd even consider Aceves.

And what signs are these? Not his stats from 2011, that's for certain. It wasn't like he ended strong, or he turned to dominant form. He has a 6.00 ERA in August, and 3.80 in September.
