I didn't see Masterson on that list. Isn't that who we traded for VMart?

He was a piece of the trade, but Hagadone and Price were high-upside guys that were a significant part of the trade as well. Masterson was a mediocre pitcher at the time, and considering his repetoire was-- and still is-- completely ineffective against left handed batters, many were projecting him as a righty specialist at the time.

That being said, I do see your point, and I still disagree. We'll need to see how the next group of guys develops, or what we can get from them on the trade market, but this team has had a ton of success in the first two rounds in the last decade.

I thought the centerpiece of the VMart was Masterson. I just think that getting a couple of draft picks for a guy of Papelbon's caliber is not something I would ever celebrate. That's just my opinion.

Let me clarify. Building a bullpen from within the organization has been an organizational weakness for 9 years.

Has it? Their closer and primary set-up man, who are both good, are from within the organization. Hard to call it a weakness when that is the case. That said, I do agree that their production rate of quality relievers leaves something to be desired. I think a big part of that is draft strategy. They've had a high number flops with college relievers, and their successes are with college starters converted to relievers. I think they should stay away from the fools gold that is Craig Hansen, Bryce Cox, et al.

I agree with you here. It isn't a matter of celebrating, it is about making shrewd decisions. The money isn't there, and the draft picks are a consolation prize.

The money is there.

The money was there for Lackey and Crawford.....it should be there for Papelbon. f*** the draft picks......between the Patriots and the Redsox.....I am so sick of hearing about "value" and "compensation" and "stockpiling".

Just pay the guy.

Last year wasn't a year where any fan or media member is left with a good feeling about the team - except for E1. They can't operate under the previously planned budget. They let a crisis develop and unfold that has the potential to damage the franchise. This is not an ordinary off season where they had gone to the playoffs and put up a good showing. They need to turn things around. I am sure that JH is prepared to open the check book. Those of you who are expecting payroll neutrality will be surprised. Just a prediction.

Sounds good to me, I'll be happy to deal with an I-told-you-so like that

I have the same feeling. We can't make another disastrous season like in the recent past, no way, so... JH has to open the check book and/or Cherington must show why he was selected as the GM.

He is still occasionally slipping back into shock/denial, but there is still a lot of pain and he has been lashing out at posters like us in anger. Next step for him is depression. No, there will be no merry Christmas in E1's home this year. His Santa Clause; I.e. Sugarcoated Theo will be the tasty treat of Cubs fans this Christmas.
