With all these reports coming out, and people criticizing nearly every member of the team, I think one person is being left out of this whole thing: Scutaro.

While the other Red Sox were trying out their $300 headphones in September, Scutaro actually seemed to really care, he had a 1.019 OPS during it, and had 21 RBIs. He also seemed to be reasonably clutch throughout the rest of the season, the double off Mariano Rivera that led to the blown save at Fenway really sticks out to me.

Scutaro had started out the year pretty badly, and I won't shy away from saying I wanted them to start Lowrie instead of him, but even during those bad times you could tell he always cared. When he missed the suicide squeeze play, and then got thrown out at second base trying for a double, you could tell that he always actually cared.

Easily the best Shortstop we've had here since Nomar, I hope he's back in 2012.

I am glad someone made this thread. I almost made it myself several times during the season, and I also noticed that Scutaro's name was not in any of the bad reports.

I do not hide the fact that I was a founding member of the "Lowrie is a Sexy Beast" Fan Club, but even back then, I still defended Scutaro for being everything a team should want in a player. A former "scrub" and bench player, he has had three or four excellent seasons in a row. For 4.5 million I sure hope they excercise his option.

I could see that Lowrie collapse from the second he started out hot. Players who are injured for years never match the big preseason hype, because I honestly don't even know where all that hype came from. I just logged into talksox one day and suddenly a group of posters were saying Lowrie could be a reliable SS.

Count me in the Scutaro Fan Club. Since Nomar left, the Sox have gone through some shortstops. It seemed Epstein simply could not figure out how to pick a good one (which is why I am worried about Iglesias) until he signed Scutaro.

Besides, Marco Scutaro is a pretty cool name. It is right there with my all-time favorite shortstop, Rico Petrocelli. :)

Another thing about Scutaro that is not true about many other players on the team: he is willing to go out and play when he is not 100% healthy. Solid guy; not spectacular, but solid.

BTW: Iglesias may never be ready for the majors if he cannot hit the baseball far better than what he has shown so far. Scutaro may be here for a while.

It's time for Iglesias to stick on the roster--and do the pitchers a favor on defense.

He hit .235 with an OPS of .554 at Pawtucket this year. No matter how good he is in the field, he is a black hole at the plate. Unless that changes he is not ML material.

If he does, maybe he could be an attractive trading chip.

I say have Iglesias be a backup of Scutaro, it's obvious he can't hit in the major leagues yet, but if his defense is as good as it looks, then he'd be great for the pitchers on this team.

It's not like Scutaro's good defensively either, he'd be a pretty sharp contrast.

One of things that is most commendable about Scuts 2011 especially down the stretch is that you had veterans that carried more weight on that team clearly doing nothing more than filling out the uniforms (in more ways than one) and usually when vets decide to make a point by mailing it in, they make it hard for the other guys not to follow suit. "I don't want to see you birds playing solid ball out there while I'm doggin' it becomes the mantra as stupid as that sounds. The pressure is not often verbal but it is there. Guys like Peddey are immune from that nonsense because he never runs at idle and Ells was working on an MVP season. But Scuts did not have the clubhouse cred to avoid coming under scrutiny and he still played with intensity and focus and put up numbers.

Scutaro should have been batting 5th in September when he wasn't batting 2nd. Reddick, MacDonald, Lowrie and Lavarnway were not good options to bat after Ortiz or AGon.

Disagree about Lavarnway' date=' although with his inexperience he isn't ideal. All others, agreed.[/quote']I thought it was terribly unfair to bat him 5th in such a huge game with such little experience. It took the bat out of AGon's hands and it put the kid in a very tough spot. It was a big mistake. Scutro was hot and he handles pressure very well.
