I want Texas to win for the same reason I wanted Texas to win last year. I'd prefer if their ace decided he wants to stay in Texas, instead of New York.

Francona nervous before his Fox debut

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe GBy Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

ARLINGTON, Texas — Terry Francona, looking sharp in a dark suit and a green tie, admitted he was nervous about calling tonight's game on Fox.

He's counting on Joe Buck to carry him through.

"I wouldn't have done this without Joe," he said. "I've known him since Triple-A. He says he'll get methrough it and I trust him. He said he has a multi-year deal, so I can't take him down."

Francona talked to three writers from Boston about a few topics:

Has it settled in that he's not the manager of the Red Sox? "No. I still catch myself saying, 'we.' It's hard to go eight years and say 'we' and 'us.' ... I've had to do a few things but I've tried to kind of lay under the radar a little bit and let it go away."

His perspective now, does he look back and think of things he might have done differently? "I think I did thatwhen we were doing it. I think it's hard as you're emotional. Any time you're emotional it's hard to look at stuff. I'm sure as I get less emotional I'll have a better perspective but I'm not there get. Then [the opportunity to go on Fox] came along and I kind I dove it into it. I don't want to embarrass myself."

Any disappointment not getting the White Sox job? "No. I knew. I knew. I didn't know who, I just knew they [had somebody else]."

Is he keeping track of the Red Sox? "I haven't the last couple of days because I've been on the run. I went down to New York the other night to practice [for Fox]. And then the [Yankee] lost so I got on a flight the next morning."

Does he think Theo Epstein will leave? "I don't know. None of my business."

On his future, will he take some time off: "I don't know. Again, I just don't know. That's something I'll have to sit down and take a deep breath and try to make a good decision. That's not an easy decision to make a good one. I took that year with Cleveland [in the front office] and it was probably the best thing I did. There will be some people I want to talk to, just for advice and things like that. See what makes sense."

Could he be a bench coach? "I don't know. First of all, you don't know what's available. You don't know what people want. I don't know. Sometimes those things kind of rise where somebody will call you and say, "Hey, you interested in this?' and it kind of gets your juices flowing. It's still a little early for me."

Does watching the postseason instead of managing in it upset him? "Yeah, except I'm so nervous about what I'm doing. I don't care right now, I just want to get through this. I watched the games the other night. You get mad. You want to be there. I think people can probably understand that."

Could TV be in his future? "No. I hope I have fun. I want to have fun. I'm more comfortable in uniform and I always will be."

On connecting with his former players: "A little bit. Bits and pieces. But I've been moving around a lot. So not really. Some texts and stuff like that."

A lot of us give Doji crap at times when he touts some kid at A ball to be a star. I gave him guff rightly so in 2010 when he wanted to DFA Ortiz and bring up Daniel Nava. But when he is right you have to give him his due. The Red Sox should have picked up Napoli when Doji was touting him. I thought it was an interesting idea at the time. The Rangers got him and he has been a wrecking ball against lefties and he has 30 HRs in 113 games. His catching has improved to the point where he isn't that bad. He would have been a much better choice than Salty. Doji was right about the guy.

Doug Fister is the best porn name of all time.

I just want to hear "Fister rings him up with the backdoor slider" someday.

And Theo opted for Bedard
He didn't want to sacrifice the future. Instead he opted to sacrifice the present for a nonexistent future. Theo will not be here when his draftees start making All Star teams.
