Lavarnway's defense is sufficient to have him catch next year. Salty's D is really poor and Lavarnway's bat is way better.

 

Instead, I suspect he will be sent back down in 2 days (if they make the playoffs).

 

Seriously, he might be the 2nd best RHB on the team behind Pedroia at this point.

Did that kid catch a hell of a game tonight? Never mind the two home runs he looked solid behind the plate. Came out to bail out Paps and looked like a cat charging up the first base line. Nailed Jones earlier in the game. Granted he is young and unpolished but he showed more talent in one 9 inning game than Salty has shown in months.

That's the thing though, he's not super "unpolished". He's been in the farm for a few years, they've been working his ass off to make him servicable defensively.

 

Over the long haul, I see Lavarnway as the primary catcher and a plus defensive backup behind him.
