Major League Baseball has rejected Manny Ramirez's bid to play winter ball in the Dominican Republic. Rob Manfred, Major League Baseball's executive vice president of labor relations, said Ramirez can't play because he's on the inactive list, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

Ramirez abruptly retired in April after violating Major League Baseball's drug policy for the second time, meaning he is facing a 100-game suspension.

"Manny Ramirez cannot play for a major or minor league club or any affiliated organization, including a winter league team, without getting the consent of the commissioner,'' Manfred said, according to Crasnick.

After learning of MLB's ruling, Ramirez told ESPNdeportes.com's Enrique Rojas he plans to formally request reinstatement to the major leagues.

"I would comply with my pending sanction and I would be available for any major league team," Ramirez told Rojas via telephone from Miami. "I already informed (agent) Scott Boras of my decision to return and begin the process.

"If any team wants to sign me, I would play. If no one does, I would look to play in Japan or any other place. I was not prepared for retirement."

Ramirez, 39, had hoped to play for the Aguilas Cibaenas, his former Dominican League team. The outfielder hit 555 homers and had a .312 during a 19-year big-league career. He was 17 at-bats into his stint as a DH with the Rays when he retired.

Yeah I dont think anyone at this point would want to sign him. Good hitter and all but his attitude bits the big one and no manager is willing to go through that trouble again. But then again the way our team is heading right now I would take the attitude just for the extra hits he would bring in. But thats just me.

I wish he could take some ABs for us tonight.

Manny Ramirez has officially been reinstated from the voluntary retirement list by Major League Baseball, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Saturday morning.

Ramirez faces a 50-game suspension when he returns, rather than 100 games, the league said earlier in the week when announcing he had filed for reinstatement. Ramirez's 50-game suspension clock starts ticking when he signs with a team.

Ramirez already served a 50-game suspension in 2009 while with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he had been notified that he was facing another offense last April when he agreed to step away from baseball.

He also is facing criminal prosecution in Florida on charges that he slapped his wife during a recent argument. He told investigators only that he grabbed his wife by the shoulders during an argument and "shrugged" her, causing her to hit her head on the headboard of their bed.

Manny's wife was quoted as saying "He can still hit pretty hard"

Manny is like 40. How much can he bring to a team? Even the bottom dwellers might not want his sorry ass.

Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reports that the Orioles and Blue Jays recently sent scouts to watch Manny Ramirez take batting practice in Miami.

They could just be doing their due diligence, but, based on comments by president of baseball operations Dan Duquette, it sounds like the Orioles might legitimately have some interest. "Manny's an interesting guy," Duquette said. "He's interesting to the fans. And he can hit. Or he could hit. I don't know if he still can. He wants another opportunity. He's trying hard to get one." Duquette has some history with Ramirez, as he signed him when he was general manager of the Red Sox in 2000. The O's don't have anyone locked into the DH spot, so perhaps they'll give Manny a shot after he serves his 50-game suspension for a second positive PED test.

A motivated Manny bent on trying to clean up his image might be worth a minor league deal. There are a lot worse players to have coming off the bench. The Sox need some RHH. I think it would make an interesting story. It's not as though it will come with a huge financial risk. It will be a small contract financially for one year. If he acts up it would not be hard to cut bait and move on. If he signed a minor league deal with the Sox I would not be upset.

Hmmmmmmm...... He seems sincere. You never know with this guy. He is truly an enigma. There is nothing to loose for any MLB team to sign the guy. He is not Michael Vick (a sociopathic criminal) he is just an immature self centered douche. I found his behavior unacceptable at times but there is no doubt he is one of the best hitters I have ever seen play the game. I guess I am on board with the Sox giving him another shot. It sure would be an interesting story. Oh, I just realized he smacked his wife around. That makes him a criminal. He seem repentant. Whatever.

It would be interesting to put him in LF for around 80-90 games with Crawford flip flopping between LF and RF. We need a RH bat. There are few better. Count me in.

I am not big on reruns. Manny did his thing here, helped for a while and then sucked. There is no need to bring him back. If some other team wants to put in a MANNYWOOD, then good luck to them for as long as the good lasts. We know, as do the Dodgers, that the good does not last.

He sucked as a human being and team mate

Maybe he did. Not many pro athletes are Saints from what I have seen. What is you point?

My point is that he sucked as a human being and a team mate and if he didn't, the FO would not have straight armed him out of town. Maybe everybody else isn't a saint, but Manny disappointed Boston and LA.

If he comes back with a different attitude, bring him back???......yea, like how long with the new and glorious Manny going to last, about as long as he did in LA???

Ya because they will have to sign him to a mulit year deal that if he acted up they wouldn't be able to drop him with the quickness...

You know who has a bad attitude? Kevin Youkilis. But no one gave a s*** when he was OPS'ing over .950 a couple years ago.

And just like that, no one would give a s*** about Manny's antics if they brought him back as long as he hit. And with the kind of contract he's going to get, one word out of his big mouth and off to the golf course.

You said that he continued to hit when I said he sucked, like hitting was the only area he was being judged in. If he continued to hit then, why did they get rid of him.....??? Because he was a cancer in the club house. I do not agree that he would be welcomed with open arms and cheered as long as hit. His fielding became a joke so if you want him to hit, maybe they could get rid of the $14,000,000 Dh and bring in Manny for pennies on the dollar??

Youk may have a bad attitude and I am not agreeing or disagreeing but nobody ever said he infected/affected the clubhouse.

The main difference is, back then, they couldn't just cut him because he made a lot of money. Now, if he acts up, he gets released. It's an apples to oranges comparison. Also, they couldn't get rid of Ortiz for Manny because he has to face a 50-game suspension before he can play.

Disagree on Youk, and refer to the Ellsbury situation. If that's not affecting the clubhouse, then i don't know what is.

If your issue with Youk is his comments about Ellsbury/wekaness, I think Pedroia was right out there too. I was being sarcastic about getting rid of the $14,000,000 Dh....what a waste that is.

Why would we want to waste money on Ramirez when he won't do anything for us until just before the Trade Deadline?

If we really want Ramirez, let another AL team like Seattle waste money on him, and than if he is hitting when they are officially out of contention they will shop him. I mean Seattle has experience making gambles with players that have bad attitudes, let them take the risk we should just wait and see if Kalish comes back healthy and Crawford produces. If those fall through than we can always do a Ramirez/Hernandez trade using Lars Anderson, Felix Dubrount and Renaudo.
