I just sense that Oswalt doesn't want to play in Boston. Maybe it's the reports that he wants to play in TX or STL, maybe its the fact he hasn't signed yet, or the reports saying he has even thought about retiring if he doesn't get the team he wants, but I just don't see it happening. Go for Edwin Jackson.

The Red Sox are talking to Edwin Jackson, who might be open to a one-year pact. However, one executive points out that the AL East isn't an easy landing spot for a starting pitcher. If Jackson signs for one year, he might be better off in the NL, where he could produce better numbers before trying the open market again.

I kind of always thought Jackson wasn't the type who worried too much what division he pitched in. Could be wrong though.

At this point I would be pretty damn happy if the Sox got Jackson. Maybe happier than Oswalt, because Jackson isn't preloaded with injury risk.

Got a game to start in September or October? Give me Oswalt. Got a season looming and a need for 200 ip from someone in spots 1-5? Give me Jackson... Assuming their prices are comparable.

Source: Sox hope Roy Oswalt signs on

By Gordon Edes

BOSTON -- The calendar, with spring training less than a month away, gives you every reason to believe the Red Sox will soon be adding another starting pitcher.

If they do not succeed in signing Roy Oswalt, to whom they have made an offer, a team source said Wednesday night, they most likely will shift their focus to trying to swing a deal with the Chicago White Sox for right-hander Gavin Floyd, with free agent pitcher Edwin Jackson a long-shot option at this stage.

Oswalt remains their No. 1 target, though a team source acknowledged fears that Oswalt would prefer to pitch for either the Rangers or Cardinals.

"That's just guessing," one major league source said, reiterating Boston's significant interest in the 34-year-old right-hander, whose competitiveness is off the charts even though recurring back issues raise serious red flags.

The Sox were hopeful of a decision by Oswalt shortly.

Interesting. I mean Oswalt makes sense if he's willing, veteran presence and all. I do worry bout duribility issues though; save those issues for Beckett and Buchholz.

If Jackson is looking for a one year to go back on the market in 2013, I am betting Boras is just using Boston to drive up Jackson's price tag. He certainly would want his client putting up numbers in the NL (see iortiz's post).

Oswalt might be doing the same. The rotations in Texas and St. Louis seem pretty full, though.

At some point you got to ask why do you want a pitcher who doesn't want to pitch for you. I understand that it could be a negotiating tactic. However, we certainly don't need some one who is not a "competitor" or another Erik Bedard personality a talented pitcher with no "heart".

There isn't a lot of substance to all these rumors, so you just have to wait and see what happens.

I wouldn't exclude anybody. Look how the media missed the boat on Pujols and Fielder. Maybe they'll get somebody who isn't on the public radar.

For a 1 year contract, I really prefer Oswalt. He is a much better pitcher than Ewdin Jackson. EJ is worth about a third less than Oswalt, and I don't think we can get him for that amount. Paying the same for EJ as for Oswalt would not be a value signing. I think Benny Boy needs to get authority from ownership and sweeten the deal to Oswalt with a couple of million more. Offer him $10 million on a take it or leave it basis. If he says no, lock down EJ. Right now Oswalt has the upper hand and the Sox are being used in the process. Bring it to a head. Sweeten the pot and if he doesn't sign on the dotted line now, walk away.

There are just a bunch of rumors floating around now. I am not believing anything I read until he gives a definite answer. I have heard he wants to go to Texas, I heard that he wants to go to St. Louis, I heard that he wants to go to Cincinnati, I heard he wants to retire. I believe that he would like to go play for the Rangers or the Cards because both teams were good last year. The Cardinals offered him a one year deal worth 5 million plus incentives. He didn't accept that offer. He turned down an offer from Detroit. I am beginning to think we offered him somewhere around 6 million plus incentives. It is enough for him to think about, but he is still waiting to hear from other teams. I hope we find out an answer today and I hope he accepts it. Maybe we are negotiating with him. We will find out something today. I hope we get our answer (that he accepts the offer. :D

The Orioles are a long shot to sign Edwin Jackson, but they’d love to have him and would consider offering a four-year deal, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports. The Orioles’ chances of signing the free agent right-hander will likely come down to money, Connolly notes.

If Oswalt doesn't want to pitch in Boston would that influence your view?

He a veteran and a professional. Andy Pettitte's desire to be close to home didn't affect his performance when he returned to the Yankees. No, it doesn't affect influence my view at all, but it tells me that the Sox will have to pay more than Texas.

Edwin Jackson Rumors: Thursday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 26 at 11:05am CST]

The Red Sox have*offered*Edwin Jackson a contract and the Orioles would consider offering a four year deal. The market for Jackson -- arguably the top free agent remaining -- seems to be picking up. Here are the most recent rumors from around MLB:

The Cardinals checked in on Jackson, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets. The right-hander, who finished the 2011 season in St. Louis, has a multiyear offer from an unknown team that's not the Red Sox or Cardinals.

Oswalt/Jackson deals are going to be done this week, beyond which teams are the winners.

Here's my call.

Oswalt to Texas

Jackson to O's/STL

Floyd to Boston

$5 million is a total joke. We paid that to Smoltz coming off shoulder surgery and we knew he wouldn't be available for at least half of the season.

And we pay Jenks $6M to be a couch potato.

Roy Oswalt Rumors: Thursday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 26 at 1:07pm CST]

The latest rumors on Roy Oswalt suggest the Cardinals, Rangers, Red Sox, Nationals, Guardians and Brewers are in the mix for the right-hander. Oswalt wasn't interested in joining the Tigers, but the Cardinals and Red Sox have also made him offers and the other clubs appear to be monitoring the situation. Here are today's Oswalt rumors:

The Red Sox offered Oswalt about $5MM, ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports. The Red Sox don't seem interested in signing pitchers to long-term contracts, as Olney points out.

There's some debate in the Rangers' front office over whether Oswalt is necessary given Texas' existing starting pitching depth, ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick tweets.
