The operative word here is "formal" According to an earlier report which is consistent with this tweet, the Red Sox have made it clear that Jason would only make the club if either Shop or Salty got injured. Nvertheless tis isn't good. Why can't the Red Sox simply move on. They don't need this distraction.

Meanwhile while Ben is futzing around the Yankees just pick up a frontline starter from the Mariners

He would have to accept a MiLB deal though. Just like Bernie with the Yankees, he most likely won't. He still thinks he can play at the ML level. Pride is hard to overcome.

He has better numbers then Shoppach. What can it hurt to invite him to spring training?

It can hurt like hell NB... The Red So are not the Yankees and as soon at Putrtek arrives along with Wastefield the front office will feel obligated to find a reason to put these two bums on the team. Some reasons?

1. The team has a winning record when Putritek catches. Of course, he catches the best pitchers, but how about the fact that he can't throw out his grandmother and is the worst hitter in baseball after June? Shoppach would be released so their sacred cow can be on the team.

2. Wakefield can get the Red Sox all time winning record and we'd rather have him get it than keep it in the hands of the drug user----even though it took about ten tries for this piece of puke to get that 200th one last season. Think we could have used those five or six wins we didn't get because Francona and Epstein put Wakefield ahead of the team....and, oh yes, he's an innings eater.

Yankees Agree To Terms With Hiroki Kuroda

By Mark Polishuk [January 13 at 7:25pm CST]

The Yankees have agreed to a one-year contract with Hiroki Kuroda, pending a physical, tweets Jack Curry of the YES Network (Twitter link). The deal will pay Kuroda between $10-$11MM in 2012.

For who' date=' Shoppach? Dude is a lot worse then V-Tek. Also, we haven't been signing anyone who deserves a spot over Tek anyway.[/quote']

I would take both Shoppach and Lavarnway as backup catchers over Varitek.

Posted
Shoppach is right around 28% and Varitek is right around 17%. It's not even close.

I guess I am a little biased. I just don't want to see a guy I loved to watch since I was 10 years old leave.

All GMs lie. You should know that.

And where there's smoke, there's fire.

Then why isn't Pujols a member of the Rangers, CJ Wilson a Yankee and Jose Reyes a Brewer?

You would rather watch Varitek continue to embarass himself when he should have retired gracefully?

Varitek is pathetic, useless..and he is a distraction. He is part of the way things used to be. He needs to pack it up right now.

Now we don't know if Kuroda's agent actually did try to peddle him at $8M with the Sox getting outbid from there or if Kuroda never did lower his price after all.

Wanted to at least use this to find out something about the Sox direction for the remainder of this post season and that is just to high a number for that purpose. The Sox were never going to give Kuroda $10-11M.

Are you freakin' kidding?????? You have to be. You can't be that out of it. Varitek can't throw worth a damn, Shoppach has a strong arm and can keep the opposition from making it a track meet when he catches. He is the worst hitter from July on and has been close to that since 2008. Shoppach did not have a good year with the bat last season but the previous two showed good power. Putritek sucks; he has no business being on the team. He brings nothing to the club. Craptain???? Some leadership he showed when the team went into the tank last September. He showed no leadership at all and even denied there was a problem. The front office hasn't learned a Goddamn thing from last season.

Ummm...because they signed with a different team?

I don't see the relevance. All GMs lie. Its part of their job-misinformation to try to get the upper hand. I didn't say I blame them, but they ALL lie.

The Yanks also just got Michael Pineda from the Mariners, WTF is Ben doing?

I guess it just comes down to the fact that I really want him to retire in a Red Sox uniform. I think if the Sox don't sign him, he is going to sign somewhere else and I would hate that.

It's an off-hand comment regarding the "where there's smoke, there's fire" point. A lot of times there's a lot of smoke, but no fire, and that's not only regarding the Red Sox.

What two players do the Sox have in their system that are superior to a package of Montero and Noesi?

When the Yankees got rid of Bernie Williams, they did EXACTLY WHAT THE RED SOX ARE DOING WITH VARITEK NOW, which was offer him a MILB deal that they knew he wasn't going to take.

As for Wakefield, they haven't even been in contact with the guy.

I know you were looking for validation for your earlier opinions, but baseless conjecture is not the place to get it.

@ Fred

Again with due respect ********!!!!!!!! Varitek will be on the team and if they have to cut Shoppach or trade Satalamacchia to do it they will. Only Valentine stands in the way and if he has the courage and guts I think he has he is our hope that these two bums will not be on the team. If he stands down I will lose all respect for him and those two will be on the ball club. Enough is enough, these two have to go.

Right. Because Varitek is currently a member of the 25-man roster under contract and so is Wakefield.....Oh, wait.....

No other team has made him an offer. He could retire in a Sox uniform. A ceremony could occur at the home opener.

I wouldn't . He sucks.

I doubt there would be much interest from other teams for him either .

He should retire.

This is all for the best, really. I hope the Sox spend NO MORE MONEY. There is no way in hell we make a run at the ring now, what with the Yankees getting a good pitching staff and the Rays already having one. This season is pretty much over before it even got started. Its a rebuilding year.

But just wait 'till next year.

Honestly I said for the longest time now that I thought this idea of SP falling in price was a complete fantasy and/or fabrication as it flies in the face of contemporary reality.

So I am just as ready to believe that the initial reports of the prices dropping for Kuroda and Oswalt were a complete hoax as Kurota ended up right were folks thought he would. So while being a little on the fence I am really still thinking the Sox will end up with none of these guys because the prices are to rich for their blood.

I wasn't suggesting that we should have made Mariners an offer although it would have been nice. What the issue is the Yankees just made a significant improvement to their rotation and if the Kuroda deal is true then even more so and Ben not only hasn't made a countermove but is futzing around with mariginal pitchers and others with severe baggage.

Posted
To sum up the off season thus far. The Yankees have added two pitchers to their rotation-- Pineda and Kuroda. The Red Sox have replaced their closer Papelbon with an injury prone Bailey and added Melancon. I don't think we have closed the 7 game gap in the standings.
