I think the Yanks are in the playoffs for sure. The sox have an excellent chance' date=' but their injuries make them just short of a lock. Thing is, the sox had everything go right offensively (even with Drew down, Reddick came up and was the balls) and everything go wrong on the mound. Lester and Paps have been awesome. [b']Beckett was great but is hurt. Lackey is the worst pitcher in the AL. DiceK is out for the yr. Buchholz is out for the yr. Wakefield should retire. Miller aint the answer. Etc, etc, etc.[/b]

....and Bedard still a mystery....

Thats exactly what worries me the most...

From Gordon Edes on ESPNBoston.com

Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz took another promising step toward a possible return before the end of the season with what manager Terry Francona termed an "aggressive" throwing session Friday.

"He ended up making 70 throws from 120 feet," Francona said. "It was encouraging that he got out that far."

The next step in Buchholz's progression will be the most significant: throwing off the mound. That's when he has experienced recurring discomfort in his back, which ultimately was diagnosed as a stress fracture. Francona said Buchholz will throw on Saturday, but at less intensity, and it remains to be seen whether he will repeat at 120 feet or throw from the mound. Francona said trainer Mike Reinold and pitching coach Curt Young are mapping out Buchholz's program for the next couple of weeks.

If Buchholz does well, Francona said, his pitching again this season "hasn't been ruled out."

I was real excited to see Miller in the rotation until this last horrible outing. I guess we can cross him off the list
The fact that he had been on a list just makes me shake my head. WTH were they thinking?

what playoffs? it ain't over yet.

Precisely. If we can manage to get swept by the Rays, its just a three game lead. We are perfectly capable of completing our task and blowing that lead. Its very important that that is what we do, to maximize the chance that the owners' hands are forced to act and rid ourselves of our incompetent GM and manager.

For the first time since the early part of the season, I wonder if the Sox have enough pitching to make the playoffs let alone get to the World Series. There were not a lot of pitchers available but something should have been done. The Red Sox should have been looking at someone beyond Harden and Bedard. Jackson from the White Sox, Harang from the Padres, Dempster from the Cubs, Rodriguez from the Astros, or any of the pitchers possibly acquirable should have been aggressively pursued, imo. The Red Sox have the offense but are in trouble with there pitching.

That's exactly what I had been saying a tons of times before the trade deadline; GET A DAMN SOLID SP, what did they get? Another injured who can't give you at least 7 IP and BTW abusing the pen every single start; another desperate move by Theo, just a couple of hours before the deadline.

I am a Yankee fan posting for the first time here and even though our lead is 3.5, I don't trust our starting rotation in the playoffs. It does not matter who wins the division because both opponents are equally tough, the Rangers and the Tigers. The Rays would have to go on an insane tear to overtake you, because remember in a 4 game series they would pick up only 2 games by taking 3 of 4, and they are due to lose some games. The way I see it Lackey got over 80 million and he has playoff experience so he is gonna get the ball. Francona may go 3 man with Wakefield doing long relief. It's all about who gets hot and when so no matter how bad it looks you just have to get on a roll. We actually have similar problems with pitchers who can get lit up at any given moment, but I like our bullpen. Anyway, get off the ledge.

Without Buchholz and even with Beckett, the sox rotation is beatable. The only rotation that would concern me would be Anaheim and they are on the outside looking in. We match up vs every team pretty well, so if we play the way we are capable of, we can make the WS. Hopefully, someone can knock off the Phils, cause I dont think we have a prayer against them

Beatable and scary. I think the Sox are in trouble. The playoff rotation seems secondary to even making the playoffs.
