Who is this new pitching coach, Young, who was so bright in Oakland? Must be without the Park effect factored in.

Other than Becket''s comeback, I can't see a single feather in Young's cap the whole season.

The staff is loaded with underachievers, starting with Lackey.

Maybe Tito's "cheerful indifference" is rubbing off.

Posted

The only real underachiever is Lackey. Everyone else is just about where they've been for their careers.

The problem is more a lack of overachieving.

Gammons tweeted that Lackey has the worst ERA for a Sox pitcher with 25 starts EVER.

What was the worse signing? Dice-K or Lackey? I guess you could say Lackey since Dice-K gave us one good year....

Posted

Dice-K gave us pretty solid performance when healthy, and Lackey has played for 2 seasons, 1 of which, he was pretty damn good overall. I'd hardly call them complete failure contracts, and even though Lackey has s*** the bed this year, to be generous, he's still had one very good year, and a few more years to redeem himself.

That said, I think Lackey needs to really find it next year, otherwise he will be considered a complete bust. Daisuke, however, was a pretty effective pitcher when he was healthy.

They said that in the telecast last night, too

With all the s*** pitchers they had, especially back in the early part of the 80's, this is as true a testament of his body of work this year that you'll find.

The only time he finds the plate he's right around the middle of it and nobody is scared of his 88mph fastball. And his playoff successes were a looooong time ago

The Red Sox look like a fat, contented wild card cow.

Why else would they be throwing 1.5 whip pitchers out there every other day?

At least they're trying Weiland tonite.

And WTF are they supposed to throw out there?

Becketts out

Bucholz is out

Matsuzaka is out

Wakefield, Lackey & Miller are who, I assume, you're referring to as the 1.5 WHIP guys.

So after Jon Lester, just who the f*** do you expect to see out there?

Just some outside the box thinking here, but considering Lackey does have the highest ERA in franchise history (!), do you think perhaps we send him to the bullpen next year?

Before you all jump on me and say it's a terrible idea, let me just say I know it's probably not happening and I'm just opening some discussion, but think about it. We're stuck with him for three more years, he makes too much and plays too poor for any team to take him off our hands, and he's obviously not working out as a starter. I'm not saying give him the closer's job, but really, what would we have to lose if we ease him into the role? It's a gamble and maybe it will pay off. Can't be any worse than what he's giving us now.

OK, just some food for thought, and it scares me we have to trot this guy out there for three more years as a starter. Preferably, I just wish he'd visit Bartolo Colon's doctor instead.

A looooot around here gonna say you that he still have potential, but I won't. His fastball and command is a joke, even our friend Darnell McD can bomb him. The sad part of the story is that he is making a loooot of money and they won't give up and relegate him to the pen just like that, they gonna give him a shot, but guess what? In the attept to turn his s*** back, we gonna fail every single day when he goes to the mound costing us games and pen. If you ask me... They should accept that made a mistake and eat his salary or send him to the pen or trade him even they lose money in the process, and bring another solid SP, otherwise we will see the same film over and over again the next 3 yrs.

Unless if there is something structurally wrong with Lackey they feel he can come back from that we don't know about, I agree. No way in hell you can justify using him as a starting pitcher next year under any other scenario. If the Giants can hide Barry Zito, we can hide Lackey.

The only structurally wrong with Lackey is his face and attitude, trust me. :harhar:

Actually, we should hope that he is injured, because the off season might give him a chance to heal up and pitch better next year. if he's not injured, well then we are just stuck with a suck ass pitcher for another 3 seasons. Nevertheless, injured or not, he is going to continue to suck this season, and I have no confidence in him

I really hope John can go back to being the dude who kept making my sig look good during the last few months. I'd really love for him to stop this recent streak of suckitude.

Not even I can try to sugarcoat the way's he's going right now. Maybe skipping a start from that ball to the leg can help him get back on the roll he was on. And for the record, I still say he puts up a low to mid 4 next year.

And here-in lies John Lackeys real problem since coming to Boston, you are 100% right

With regard to Lackey's attitude, which someone mentioned as a problem, I don't think thats the case at all. Lackey, if nothing else, has always been a competitor.

While people sit here and rip Lackey apart for not caring, for making too much money, and all the other peripheral issues that he is being slammed for, put yourself in his shoes.

Since he signed with the Red Sox:

- His wife mis-carried

- And she is fighting stage 3 cancer

Thats a lot for anyone to deal with.

And if anyone here that bitches and f***ing whines that he doesn't care, or is dis-interested then like I said, put yourself in his shoes. And the money thing???? f***ing get over it. Someone said he's a thief? Get a f***ing clue. Thats the most assinine thing I have ever read. If you can say with 100% honesty that YOU wouldn't have signed the contract he signed then you're a better man than I am. The Red Sox offered him the contract and they can hardly be faulted because unfortunately you can't predict the s***-storm of bad luck he's had off the field, through NO FAULT OF HIS OWN, mind you.

If you can walk through life oblivious to the fact that your wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/parent is one stage of cancer away from a f***ing death sentence then again, you're a stronger man than I am.

Cut the guy a f***ing break. There's more important things in life than f***ing baseball.

thank you both

a lot of people, myself included at times, forget that these guys are people too. and it doesnt matter if you make $15,000,000 a year or $15,000, everyone has a life outside of what they do to make those dollars

and in the context of this day in history, speculating on john lackeys attitude is so ridiculously petty it borders on nauseating

lackey deserves better, performance issues aside

Well, I got your point and the human side of it is moving and I share the same convictions; nevertheless, this is not just an amateur baseball, this is an enterprise that goes beyoooooond baseball; they are professionals and are paid very well (overpaid IMO) to do the job, just like any who has a job and has to deliver results, so... you just cant leave the money behind since it has a lot of consequences in the organization like clogging the payroll in order to bring somebody else who could be better; a lot around here including me, have a lot of problems as well (or even worse) just like John Lackey, but guess what? we have to go out there every day, work 10-12 hours every day and return/perform with quality results for what we are paid for. Unfortunately life is that cold, you keep your personal things at home and keep going. I'm not sure how the jobs are managed in the States , but here, you have to perform as you supposed to, otherwise you get fired as simple as that (I don't like it either, but my employers give a damn what is going on with my personal life, in the end they want results.) :(.

IMO If he has those issues, he should be honest and tell the GM that his head is in another place and ask for a break in order to fix his personal problems, clear his mind but stop charging-- he is already a Millionaire anyway-- and give room to the team in order to make a move or something to improve and give 'em better chances to win, otherwise, everyone loses.

No hard feelings but life is like that, unfortunately. ALMOST everything is money these days. :(

I don't tell him that he sucks or anything else mean when I send him my Christmas card.

I will rip him an ******* here when he sucks, but I don't think he comes here to check in with us. Speaking for myself, I only comment on their play. Their personal lives don't enter into my comments. We did have one psychopath poster who was all over Lackey for drinking light beer. We pretty much mocked the hell out of him for that comment.
