Salty is going to turn out to be the headline acquisition of the 2010-2011 offseason. Nothing against Adgon but we were already pretty good at first base. We DESPERATELY needed someone who could do what Salty's doing.

You also have to consider the expectations that came along with Gonzo. They were so high that he's really not a huge surprise. Even though he's playing like an MVP, everyone expected him to play like an MVP.

Salty, on the other hand, is a complete surprise. Nobody knew what to expect, and after April, almost everyone wanted his head. He's hitting .260 with a .822 OPS since 4/30. Take out that initial adjustment period and he's actually been a top catcher in the AL.

Extremely conservative move by Francona there. Does not want to let the kid start digging himself a hole he can't climb out of I guess.

Left on a high note in line for a win. If you're thinking about developing Miller rather than winning any one game, that's a move you make.

A very nice outing for Miller. Couldn't have asked for more than that. s***, if we could count on 5.1, 1 ER, I'd set him up as my #3 starter in the post season. I wish we had a #3 who could throw as well as Miller did tonight.

End the game on a nice little strike out. Get him out on a good note, keep the confidence up, and don't let him get blasted by Butler.

This is a joke right? Erik Bedard >>>>>>>>> Andrew Miller

No no no. That's not what I was saying at all. I was saying Andrew Miller did a hell of a job tonight. I was saying that this performance is something I would expect from our #3 starter, not Andrew Miller.

I would love for Miller to take some confidence from this and bring it with him into the bullpen. That'd be huge for us down the stretch if he could be a useful bullpen arm. I think Erik Bedard has pitched about as well as Miller did tonight in all three of his starts so far. Our pitching has the potential to shape up nicely, especially if Lackey's recent turn around isn't a mirage.

On second thought, Lackey had a cute little run of not getting full on raped but he's been pretty atrocious across the board. Probably can't expect much from him. God, can we give this guy the renteria treatment and send him to the NL west somehow?

It's a tough decision (the post season rotation). You've got Erik Bedard, who hasn't thrown a pitch in the post season, but is throwing pretty well for the Sox (3.38 ERA in 16 IP). Or you can go with Lackey, who is 6-1 with a 3.93 ERA in his last 8 starts, yet has a 6.02 ERA this season, and has a career 3.12 ERA in the post season.

It's actually going to be a very tough decision.

I don't think it is, personally. You may be right, because Francona sometimes is loyal to people for god knows why and he slotted Lackey as the #2 going into the season. I think that was about sending a message to Beckett, but I could be way off base. I think they'll go with the best pitcher come playoff time, and to me, that will definitely be Bedard. He's been better than Lackey his whole career.

Lackey has a post season record, and that's a big deal, especially when considering a guy who doesn't particularly like the big scene. Although I think that's a load of horseshit. He's doing fine here now, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Lackey get the nod for game 3. Regardless, they'll both be throwing in the 7 game series because of the structure of the games.
