Former Yankees pitcher Hideki Irabu was found dead in his home near Los Angeles, according to WFAN.

According to the station, Japanese news services say police are investigating it as a suicide.

The Padres signed Irabu in 1997, but saying he only wanted to play for the Yankees, was traded to them later that year. Irabu pitched three years for the Yankees, going 29-20 before being traded to the Expos after the 1999 season.

Irabu, a Japanese native, was 42.

After failing to cover first base during a Apri 1, 1999 exhibition game, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner called him a "fat, pussy toad" and banned him from a road trip to Los Angeles.

The Boss apologized two days later.

"It's unfortunate that the remark about his weight came out," Steinbrenner said, according to ESPN.com. "I knew that everybody would take that and make that the big thing ... I think some unfortunate things have happened and we've got to make him understand that we're with him. The Yankees need him. Underline need, big-time. We need him."

Strange that they'd mention the frog thing here. I hope when I die, my obituary won't include public insults made to me. Either way, RIP.

I didn't know he had a pilot's license.

Really though, that's a shame. 42 is young. R.I.P

I heard that he hung himself. That must have been a strong rope.

A man dies and you make jokes...

He played for the Yankees. My Dad fought his grandfather in WW II, but more importantly, he played for the Yankees. We hate them Yankees here. On the bright side, he has entered into a group of my favorite Yankees-- the dead ones. This is the first suicide by a Yankee, so that is special to me.

Just because someone makes a joke doesn't mean they don't feel bad about what happened, or is a heartless, compassionless person. I personally joke about everything, even if it's something that I care deeply about. I figure if I can't laugh or make a joke about anything, I might as not laugh or joke at all. Even the most saddest, f***ed up thing in the world has to have something funny in it.

Although I can see where you are coming from, especially with this statement:

That is going too far in a way, if serious. I don't care about dumb little jokes, but outright hating people for a uniform they put on for a job they hold and finding their death to be something "special" is just f***ing insane.

But then again, he did kill himself, so screw him. He probably destroyed his family by doing so. I take back the R.I.P.

Excellent advice for the Middle East and other parts of the world where there is sincere hatred of people just because of ethnicity, religion etc. They are serious. I was just joking.

I know lots of dead baby jokes too, but I sincerely do like babies.

Suicide is a part of Japanese culture. It might hurt his family a bit, but who knows? They could totally accept what he did, or even have a ton of respect for doing what he did.

The victims of suicide are the family. They are left to live out their lives in grief wondering if they could have prevented the suicide. That's a nice burden to leave.

Especially a sports uniform, if they were wearing a Nazi uniform I could understand, but that isn't the case.
