How long as it honestly been since we've had a relief pitcher who can do what Aceves can do in the middle innings?

Think about it. What's the holy grail of middle relief? The one thing that every team can make room for in their bullpen because of its sheer value to the team? It's a guy who can pitch multiple innings of good baseball, consistently, save other relievers and pick up the pieces after the starters to give the team an honest chance to win..

Right now, that's a pretty fair description of Ace. He's pitching like the Goose out there and has all year. It's been incredible to watch what he's done in the long role. Which is why I Think Miller and Weiland are starting over Ace -- because the team recognizes that Ace has clicked where he is and needs to stay there for now.

What he did for this team last night was literally the reason they won. His ability to get out there, pitch efficiently and cover multiple innings ultimately allowed the Sox to outlast the Rays on a night when it was obvious that the offense didn't have it, and allowed the team to scratch a run across. It kept us out of a tie with NYY for one more night and he should be respected on that basis alone.

And considering that NYY basically threw him away? Males it all the more delicious. I hope this kid is around in a Red Sox uni for a very long time.

He's an outstanding piece to our bullpen. He does what Wakefield used to do, except he does it effectively. Not to mention that when we get blasted for 7 runs in the first 2 innings, this is an offense that can easily come back, and a guy like Aceves can come in and stop the bleeding and give us a chance to come back. Look at the game vs TB when DiceK got lit up. Wakefield comes in and gives up 5 ER in 3.1 IP. We got smashed, but if Aceves keeps us in the game there, the momentum shifts a little bit and gives us a shot to win.

He has a 5.14 ERA in 21 innings as a starter and a 2.13 ERA in 42.1 innings as a reliever. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I don't know what is his contract situation these days, but for what he has shown and the fact that he is young (28) and his best years are yet to come... we should sign him for a long term, if we haven't done.

Superb, superb pickup that cost us nothing but money and will be cost controlled for years? As an effective long man out of the bullpen that can pitch setup caliber ball if called upon? Heck of a deal. Almost makes up for Jenks.

The Yankees made a mistake not bringing back this guy. He's gonna be good.

He was great for the Yankees. Cashman let emotion get involved when he cut him and it has come back to burn him. Would be really nice to see him in a Yankee uniform this yr. He was very valuable in our run to the title in 2009 and was our Ramiro Mendoza that yr. Having a guy who can effectively save a bad start from your starter or give you valuable innings late in games is pretty good.

With all the injuries, Tito might have him start, but then we wouldn't have as good of a bullpen as we do now.

And this is the reason why we sign busts like Penny, Smoltz, Hermida, etc etc. Because these moves cost the team almost nothing, and some of them pay off. If Aceves was pitching with a 5 ERA, I'm sure we'd be hearing a ton about Theo's incompetence, needing to get an experienced replacement, dumpster digging not working out, etc.

All I'm saying is, the next time we bring in a low-cost signing, and it doesn't work out, it's not a sign of incompetence. Some of these signings don't work out, but they don't cost the team anything, and sometimes we'll get a good player like Aceves for nothing.

It's funny how many people there are criticizing Epstein for signing Jenks and Wheeler to their contracts and how few people there are praising him for getting Aceves, Albers and Morales for practically nothing.

Aceves is awesome. I was actually really surprised we started him off at Pawtucket this season because I remembered how good he was for the Yankees a few years ago.

Jacko, why exactly did NYY let him go again? What happened there?

I think that was due his last injury, they weren't confident that he could make it. Wrong call, since he is young, he was not expensive and as u said, his numbers were solid at that point.

He had a back injury that he was rehabbing. Then during his rehab, he decided to race on a bicycle, fell and broke his collarbone. They werent too pleased to hear that the guy who was rehabbing a back injury was racing bikes, so they DFA'd him off the 40 man with hopes of resigning him to a MiLB deal and having him work his way back. Once DFA'd, though, Aceves got upset and walked.

The Pocket Ace bails us out again.

I don't think there's a better longman in all of baseball right now, and it's saved our butts over and over again this year.

When he came into the game tonight I believe we were down 6-5, and my first thought was "Nice, Aceves should give us some good innings while we work over KC's pen to take the lead and not look back". And that's exactly what happened. It's nice to have a lot of confidence in your relievers, something a lot of teams can't say. I feel the same way about Albers.

Just this year but we have cost controls over him for at least a few more seasons. 2 years or 3, not sure which. I'm pretty sure his 10 innings in '10 don't count as a year of service time which makes it 3. He hasn't been in the league long enough to be a full UFA, so we get him cheap, and we get him for awhile.
