Yes, there were 0 outs. If the game stayed close it allows Ortiz to come in during the 9th.

It worked. You can't complain about it.

Sorry, but that just doesn't stand up.

1. The BIGGEST impact he could have is in a situation where the bases are loaded. You have to go with the opportunity you have.

2. Why wait? Why does it matter if it's only the 7th? You have an opportunity to close the gap, tie it, or even take the lead. You might not have that opportunity later. It doesn't matter when you take the lead, a run is run! Why can't people understand this!

So lets recap: you have the biggest potential impact situation (Bases loaded, no outs) and you decided NOT to go to your best hitter on the bench so that you can reserve him for later when he might not have a chance to make a big impact (Ie, bases empty w/ a 2 run deficit). It's just not smart.

Finally, lets address the "But what about the 9th inning, 2 down situation". The best way to avoid that situation is to do exactly the opposite of what you are defending. Putting Papi in that spot (7th, no outs, down a few runs, bases loaded) will, in the long run, give you the most runs, thus minimizing the need to make a big 9th inning comeback.

I have little respect for the intelligence of baseball managers' date=' and Tito is no exception even though he is my all time favorite. No sarcasm[/quote']

But saying we're right more than he is? Just a ridiculous statement that can't be proven. Just because a Tito decision doesn't work out, doesn't mean your decision would have.

Yes please! Being an auditor, I'd appreciate that...

Just stop.

Truth hurts sometimes. Tito's decision worked out and people bitch about it. Results are more important than hypotheticals.

Oh a HBP, great strategy by McDonald. It worked I'm not complaining but you're setting yourself up for a s*** storm to compare him to Ortiz.

NOT true. It's actually quite easy to prove. Take each decision (BP move, PH move, etc) he makes and compare it (over the long run) to 'break even' chance. In each decision you look at the options (who he brings in/PH) and the probabilities behind them (player A has more success than player b, etc). When he goes against the probabilities (as in bring in a player with less success/no history against opponent) sometimes it will work, sometimes it wont. He needs to be at least break even though. I'm sure he isn't, that his head scratching decisions don't work out as often as they do (compared to his other choices). It can be figured though.

Even Tito's biggest supporters know that game management is not his strong suit. The moves tonight were the wrong moves. The percentages were that they would fail. The fact that they worked out this time doesn't make them the right moves. By your logic, when Joe Maddon made out a lineup with 2 third basemen thus losing the DH, it was the right move because Tampa won and the pitcher hit a double. What a genius move!!!

What do his numbers look like tonight?

Dunno, just heard him K with RISP a couple innings ago, and then GIDP last inning. I haven't watched the game much.

Boxscore has him 1-5 with a leadoff HR and 7 LOB.

MVP - Don't compare Ortiz to McDonald. I don't care how you cut it. Look at the splits. McDonald has a .414 OPS vs LHP this year. No excuse to hit him with bases loaded instead of Ortiz.

DM - on base twice.

Ortiz - 0.

Thanks Tito!

IT. WAS. A. FLUKE.!

McD is .115

PAPI .305

Simple as that!
