He should play the outfield. He may have only played it once at the big league level but he's played it a ton in winter league. Screw this injury business. I'm sick of these people getting babied over every damn thing. I swear 20 years from now every player is going to be rolling around the field in one of those elderly people scooters wearing bullet proof vests.

Put him in LF, Ortiz at first. Just do it. He'd have to do something pretty drastic to get injured, and if he does so be it.

Agreed. It isn't like he's made of glass. Just make the routine play and don't try to pull off some Coco Crisp diving crap. I have confidence that Ells will have his back if anything gets away from him.

no more to say, a lot of wisdom here.

I'm looking forward to July 4th when inter-league play will be over so we don't have to talk about any more of this nonsense.

There is NO WAY Gonzalez is going to play outfied. PERIOD.

They would have him sit a game and have Papi play first before he'd be in the outfield.

Sure, I wouldnt mind watching him play in the OF. But, if it is safer to fit in Ortiz and take Gonzo out, do it. Gonzo should learn how to play 3B so we can take Youk out for a game or two and let Ortiz play 1b and Gonz at 3b.

Not on topic but if Gonzo racks up 2.2 RBI/game for the next 13 games starting with Phillie -- right up to the All-Star Break, he'll have 100 RBIs at the break. I dont think itll happen but its awesome... We do have a 7 game homestand vs Toronto & Baltimore where we SHOULD be lighting it up and of course the 3 game set vs Houston before going home... So many potential RBIs Gonzo!

Gonzo throws left handed. It wouldnt make much sense for him to play 3rd since he'd have to spin around to throw and have his body weight heading away from 1st or 2nd.

Just do the outfield thing, it really isn't that big of a deal.

LEFTHANDED THIRD BASEMAN DO NOT HAPPEN IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL.

Neither do lefthanded shortstops or lefthanded second basemen.

You'll find a few in beer leagues and pickup ball, but the ability of a lefthanded thrower to make the charge plays and barehand throws a third baseman has to make on bunts and little rinky-dink grounders is something a LHT would really struggle with and have a much smaller margin of error on. Too small to expect them to perform reliably in MLB.

That's why so many outfielders are LHT. It's because outfield and 1B are the only positions LHT consistently play.

There have been more lefthanded throwing catchers in the history of MLB than lefthanded third basemen.

So we should obviously play Gonzo at catcher, right?

Especially in Philadelphia. RF is very small there.

of course! I didn't even think of that... hah... Okay so no 3rd base. Guess he isn't really A-GOD then, huh? :P

Ain't gonna happen. The FO has to be against it. And Tito is a good soldier.

Asking a first baseman to play the outfield is nuts--especially one with a $100+ million contract.

David Ortiz to pay first base tomorrow

PHILADELPHIA — We can confirm a report by the Herald that David Ortiz will play first base tomorrow night.

But the Red Sox have not decided for sure yet whether Adrian Gonzalez will play right field.

Presumably, he would because he is more of a threat offensively than Ortiz is. It would make little sense to weaken the lineup for the sake of Ortiz getting three extra at-bats.

Stay tuned for more after the game.

OMFG!!!!!!!! On National TV no less. I AM SHOCKED.

Red Sox will roll the dice with Adrian Gonzalez in right field tomorrow

PHILADELPHIA — Terry Francona didn't come right out and say that David Ortiz would play first base tomorrow night with Adrian Gonzalez shifting to right field.

But he told NESN that Ortiz was likely to play first and that the only way that could happen would be to put Gonzalez to right.

"That's what I hear," Ortiz said.

Said Dustin Pedroia: "It'll be good offensively, but damn, I've gotta play second, first and right. That's a lot of ground to cover, man. I've got small legs."

a lot of Cameron-McD-frustration symptoms here, finally!

My concern is f***ing Lackey now!

Higher total: Red Sox runs or errors?

The errors could be diminished if Lackey has a good night, but we know Lackey's reality, so... make your own conclusions.

Im usually a Tito defender, but is there a worse starting pitcher to have out there when you decide to put Gonzalez in RF?

Lackey has been getting lit up all season long.....and for AGON's first game in RF....you put him out there with Lackey on the mound???? REALLY?????

I dont think hes going to fall on his face, but there is a chance it could get ugly if they are smacking the ball all over the yard and Gonzalez is chasing balls in the gap, tracking line drives and having to come up throwing to bases.

Jesus Tito.....couldnt have played him out there in a Beckett or Lester start?

+1, those are the little big things that are turning very frustrating and hard to understand. Lately, he has been screwing the line up with the McD and Cameron thing, and when he finally realize that the lineup sucks, he wants to shift but when Lackey is aboard, really? somebody tell him that Lackey is completely lost, everybody is hitting this guy, he is a 7 ERA pitcher these days. Hope i'll be wrong.

He's had one bad start since returning from the DL, it happens. I have all the confidence in the world that Lackey will go out there and give us a solid outing and keep us in the game.

there is certainly not enough room in order to be optimistic about Lackey, but i really hope, i'll be wrong.

Poor AdGon. The guy is half carrying the team with his hitting. Now he has to play RF for them too.

Maybe even with his first basemen's mitt.

Even the Globe has gotten on the bandwagon. After all, who cares about defense? Right?

What if the guy gets embarrassed out there? CC should wrap some tape around his leg and volunteer.

AdGon having to play RF could be viewed as Epstein's failure to build some depth in this team.

With Lackey on the mound? Wow' date=' just wow.[/quote']He will see a lot of action with lackey on the mound. I doubt that he will play more than 6 innings out there tonight.

That's actually what Tito said this afternoon, defensive replacements around the 6th.

IMO, I don't think Tito wants him playing the OF at all. You can just tell by the way he's answered questions from the media the last couple weeks about the situation.

I think this is one of those decisions that the front office made and he just has to go along with it like a lot of other things he has to.

And if they hadn't already lost 3 of 4 on this road trip and 5 of the last 7 games, I am sure that he would not be in RF tonight.
