I don't understand Red Sox fans rooting for the Rays in this series, just like I didn't understand Yankees fans rooting for the Rays last series. Yes, winning the division is nice, but if you have to choose between your team lengthening their division lead or playoff berth lead, I don't see how the playoff berth isn't the top priority.

And yes, I'm sure there are the Red Sox fans who will say 'I'll never root for the Yankees' (and plenty of Yankees fans will say the same thing about the Red Sox) ... but what's more important, something happening to benefit your favorite team or something happening to hurt a team you dislike?

The Rays are 8 games back, why should Red Sox fans be worried about them? Perhaps it's different for you guys with A-Rod out and Colon struggling but we're leading our division with Lester and Buchholz on the DL and Crawford just returning. We don't have much to worry about. I'd prefer the Yankees fall a few more games back so we'd have a little bit of a cushion.

y228' date=' I think it's too early to be rooting for the playoff berth and forsaking the division. Both teams could use the home field, as the sox are the best home team in the AL and the Yanks are the 4th best, behind Boston, Texas, and Cleveland, who are all in playoff position.[/quote']

It's not forsaking the division ... you'll be rooting against the Red Sox in every other series they play. It's just that, when you have to choose between catching up in the division division or lengthening their lead for a playoff berth, I think the choice is obvious. Always play it safe, in these situations. HFA is not that big of a deal, especially in a seven game series, where it might actually benefit the team without HFA.

That's fair. I guess the division is just so unimportant to me compared to a playoff berth, and I would always just want to play it safe.

In years past when the Red Sox were in second place, I've felt the same way. Being in first has a certain sense of security to it, even if it is false.

Fair enough.

Saw a lot more breaking pitches and changeups. In the second, he looked like he lost velo, but I am not sure if he was throwing changeups. Regardless, max around 94mph, sitting 92mph with a ton of movement and a bunch of 2 seamers that I will call changeups that are in the 87 range seem to be throwing the batters off. He looks good tonight. We need him to keep that up, but hopefully his 2 start shitfest was just a blip

There's no way those pitches in the second inning were change-ups. He was throwing them almost every pitch, his change has consistently been in the low 80s tonight, and they had no downward action. It's no biggie though, because it wasn't that way in any other inning.

EDIT: His 2-seamer is in the 90s (between 90 and 92). His 4-seamer is 92-94.

Ivan Nova left his start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Tuesday with an apparent leg injury.

Donnie Collins of the Scranton Times-Tribune reports that Nova "appeared to be extremely frustrated and slammed his glove off his leg as he limped to the dugout." He also added, "I'm no doctor, but (it) doesn't look good." We've yet to hear official word on the severity of the ailment and if it is, in fact, a leg injury.

.695 OPS Martin ends the game! I love that bottom of the lineup. In 6 days Lester returns and then there's no looking back.

He sprained an ankle from what I gather. He'll likely miss one or two starts
