According to Gameday Hughes fastball averaged less than 90 mph in his first two innings which compromised his first 42 pitches. It wasn't a matter of him tiring as his pitch count rose.

Are you sure? I just went through the pitch by pitch of his first two innings, and only one FB was under 92 MPH (and it was at 91).

Not at all. I apologize, those were his YTD and last 5 velocities. Gameday actually had him averaging 91.8 mph on his fastball the first two innings and 90.7 mph his last two innings.

Ah I gotcha. That velocity puts him closer to where you expect him to be. If he can sit at 92 MPH (he was 92.5 last year) I think he could pitch to a 4.15 (or so) ERA the rest of the way.

Avg FB speed 92 in the early innings, 91 at the end. It's better, and something that Hughes can build off of. He threw his change more and his curve was decent. He certainly isnt out of the wood yet, but there are glimmers of hope. That first inning was abysmal, though

Plus he was facing the Guardians...their offense has been bad lately.

In June, as a team they hit .228/.302/.354

In July, as a team they've hit .250/.311/.400

He's got a lot of work ahead of him before he sees success in the AL East. Speaking of that, tonight will be a better indication of the type of pitcher that Miller is becoming.

Hughes is not out of the woods by far. At least last night he showed glimpses of the stuff he had when he won 18 games last yr. The Hughes at the beginning of the yr didnt show any of that

You really have to look at Hughes' 2010 in two parts. Last night he pitched like he did in the second half, which is an improvement over the beginning of this year, but it won't help the Yankees all that much (in that he won't be better than Nova). He needs to regain his form from the first part of the year, or at least get somewhere in the neighborhood if he's going to help this team the rest of the way.

Will 3,000 come tonight? We'll see. I have a lot of respect for Jeter and I'm happy for him getting this far. One of the few and I mean few players in pinstripes I respect. I just hope ESPN doesn't blow the s*** out of this mentioning a million times he reached 3,000 hits. Anyways, nice to see the Rays on top early.

What I liked about the outing is that he showed command of a change, which he all but abandoned at the end of last yr. He isnt good enough to live off two pitches, he needs to incorporate the change or he will suck

0-2 with runners on 3rd and less than 2 outs. Seriously, this f***ing team needs to learn how to swing early in the count at balls that you can lift. Not balls out of the zone, and not waiting until 2 strikes to swing at a put away pitch

Colon has absolutely nothing tonight. No movement, location, or velocity on his FB ... and it's even more apparent because he's going to other stuff, which he never does.

They obviously need to do a better job in those situations, but it's not because of what you're saying. A-Rod had a hittable pitch early in the count and just missed it. Brett didn't have a hittable pitch early in his AB.

Colon has been bad tonight ... probably deserves to have given up more runs. But Niemann hasn't been any better ... Yanks just can't make him pay.
