yeah but he never came close to Ellsbury's season high, Crawford's minimum is 40, while Ellsbury's minimum is 50 (though to be fair, we don't have enough sample size for Ells).

Even though Fenway is harder to steal bases in than the Trop, Crawford is definitely gonna take more bases. Once he gets going I think he'll find his niche.

I think its gonna be a nice friendly rivalry between the two, does anyone know the record for double steals in a season? there's a good chance it might be broken this year.

Ellsbury stolen more the last 2 year he played a whole season. Crawford will steal almost as much. Should combined over 100 between them.

I think 100 would be the minimum, if both of them have career years we could see 70+ from ellsbury & 60+ from Crawford, I wouldn't rule out 150 between the 2.

If Jacoby's health remains good for the season he will have more stolen bases. He will get more chances because he will be on base more often than Carl.

To be honest, I could careless who steals more as long as they do good. *Like my dad said they will become the first duo to steal at least 50 bases each for the same team since Delino DeShields and Marquis Grissom in 1991.*

By the way, I disagree on Ellsbury beating Crawford by a large margin.

well, there was a large margin in 2009, which was the last full season Ellsbury played, he could have stolen 100 bases in 2009 if he actually had some form of patience, he stole 70 bases even though he refused take a walk even if his life was on the balance.

In addition to WhiskeyBreath's point, not only do you have to be on the field to steal bases, but you also have to be consistently getting on base as well. I'd say that Crawford has the advantage this year.

I think it depends on how the lineup looks. There is a very big difference between hitting behind Saltamacchia, or hitting behind a fellow speedster.

Ellsbury/Crawford # in lineup

1-2 - Advantage Crawford

2-1 - Advantage Ellsbury

9-1 - Advantage Crawford

1-3 -Advantage Ellsbury

Criticizing Jacoby Ellsbury as "unwilling to take a walk" is not correct. You need to look at the context in which he plays in. He was always very patient in the minors, and looks at an above average number of pitches per plate appearance in the Majors, the problem is, (and you can easily point this out in any competitive league that allows stolen bases) is that pitchers hate allowing speedy/no power guys to get on base, so they go right at them throwing a much higher percentage of strikes to them than your usual mid/high power guys, and if the pitcher's throwing you pitches down the chute, you either swing or strike out. If anyone's truly avert to taking walks, it's Crawford, but that's always been part of his game.

As for the question of the thread, Ellsbury's 2010 injury problems need to be considered. He will probably receive a significant amount of rest and at the beginning of the season will still be tentative in his stolen base approach. Gimme Crawford.

well, gardner is fast & he was still an on base machine, but point taken, he did steal 70 bases even though he had a pathetic OBP, which means he has a very very high upside.

& on the time off point, Francona already said that Ellsbury is 100% since he had a full year rest, & he's not gonna give him significant time off even in ST, check out the "Sox on Site" videos.

Going with Ellsbury. I'm not too worried about a resolved health issue and Crawford has some platoon issues -- he may easily wind up sitting more than Ellsbury, with Cameron taking his at bats against lefthanders.

BTW a .350 OBP isn't pathetic.

Ells should. He'll have better opportunities. All we know is that Francona wants Ells and Craw both in the top of the line up, and Pedey isn't going anywhere. Tito likes going LRLRLR down the line up, so for this prediction, I'm assuming a top 4 of Ells - Pedey - Craw - Gonzo.

I think running with Pedey at the plate is going to be much more enticing than running with Gonzo at the plate. Gonzo can score you from first base. Pedey doesn't necessarily have that ability as much. Ells will have more opportunities which will translate to more SB.

I think both will be right around 50. The Red Sox don't typically run a lot. Ellsbury is coming off of injury. This is Crawford 1st season not playing his home games on a track field. I also expect Crawford's attempts to go down. I think it will help keep his speed longer. Speedy players that spent the beginning of their career on turf tend to have issues later on.

I'll take Ellsbury for the win. But not by leaps and bounds.

Based on health alone' date=' I got Crawford. Ellsbury's gonna get a papercut and miss 50 games.[/quote']

Seriously? His season gets crushed by the best OLB in the Majors in Beltre and all the sudden he's Glass Joe? He averaged 149 games up until that point. Was he on your fantasy team and f'd you in SB or something?

I agree with the last three, but I think Ellsbury steals more than Crawford in the first situation, just because the middle of the order won't give Crawford enough opportunities to run.

Why do I need to simmer down? I responded to your joke with one of my own.

Crawford. But not by many.

I want to see who scores the most runs.

neither, that would be Pedroia, he's a run scoring machine.
