In all fairness, I'd imagine that it'd be much harder to keep track of relievers, even though the chart is constantly updated because each team is going to have 7 relievers and the chart doesn't separate closers from set up men from middle relievers from loogy's etc.

Good question. By rule, no. However that's a huge difference between fantasy baseball and a redraft. In other words, I'm going to give people the benefit of the doubt if there is some doubt in regards to where their pitchers are in respect to the bullpen. For example, I won't hold it against Forsyth if Kimbrel is closing in Atlanta despite the fact that he has another closer because the closer race in Atlanta isn't really clear.

 

As for some of the other teams (ie your team, Ytrb's team, a700's team, and flynnatic's team) I don't like the idea of snagging up multiple clear closers on the team. It won't kill you, but I don't think that it's a good idea.

 

Middle relief and long relief are probably the 2 hardest to figure out since they are very volatile, so I'd suggest to just use your best judgement in picking players that would best fit those roles, or at least have had recent experience in those fields. That way the numbers are more accurate towards evaluating their performance when you use them in the said roles during the voting.

 

Again, nothing is BY RULE, so people are allowed to do whatever. But I take this all into consideration when I vote and do power rankings. I'd say that you should have starters that are clear starters for sure, but the other areas aren't as obvious.

 

I told Ytrb that he shouldn't use someone that's a clear starter as a long reliever, but the main point is to try your best to use someone who has had experience in that area. I hope that helps clear some things up.

And to add (in case anyone is panicking) it doesn't mean that your team is disqualified or anything if you did use someone that's out of position. It might be a small factor in voting or rankings, but something like that is HIGHLY UNLIKELY to be a determining factor in a matchup. It may be something to include in the rationale behind a decision, but it certainly won't be a deciding factor or something that solely decides the outcome of a matchup.

 

I just don't want anyone to lose sleep over it, but at the same time I would hope that people do their best to build a REAL team, and not a fantasy team.

Since I'm bored and waiting for Dipre's picks. I decided to look at the chart and come up with my 10 reaches and 10 steals of the draft. I'm sure that one can make more choices than the names I'm listing, and for the sake of bias, I am NOT including any of my draft choices in either column.

 

Note: Just because I label a pick a "reach" does not mean that it is a bad player or a bad pick, or that the team that picked him is a bad team. I'm just saying that relative to salary, time drafted, and other similar people available, that there could have been better choices and that these particular choices were taken before I thought they would be taken. :Note

 

Reaches:

 

Johan Santana SP: 21 million and injured. 5th round.

 

Jeremy Hellickson SP: While he's most likely going to be a very good pitcher one day, I don't think that he'd be worthy of a 5th round pick. This will be his first full year in the AL East and while I can only speak for myself, I doubt that anyone else would have taken him within the first 10 rounds.

 

King Felix Hernandez SP: One can argue whether or not he's the best pitcher in the game. More likely than not, he's among the leaders, however I would not consider him worthy of the 3rd overall pick, especially when the next pitcher wasn't taken until 14th overall. I think that there would have been a couple of pitchers that I'd have taken before King Felix (he costs 6.5 million), and that a top pick like that should have been a top position player.

 

Albert Pujols 1B: In most fantasy drafts, this is a great pick. But in a $110 million draft for 25 players, one can spend about $4.4 million per player. Pujols therefore costs enough for 3.636 draft spots, or 14.5% of the entire payroll, probably not the best formula for the 2nd overall pick. Not to mention that 1B is one of the deepest positions, so at 16 million I'd have gone with many other 1B, even though that Pujols is no doubt one of the best players in the game.

 

Pablo Sandoval 3B: Pablo Sandoval looked great at the beginning of his career, although he didn't look too good last year, which frustrated me since he was on my fantasy team. He was taken in the 4th round, and even at his low salary, I'd consider that a reach.

 

CC Sabathia SP: This pick is not a reach because of talent, as nobody would deny that Sabathia is a great pitcher. However, he costs $23 million, enough for 5.22 draft spots and 20.9% of the entire payroll. He was taken in the 4th round to a team that already had 2 great pitchers, and went to a Yankee fan. I doubt that if there weren't any other Yankee fans in the redraft, that Sabathia would have been taken for a little while longer.

 

Justin Morneau 1B: There are a few reasons why I considered this pick a reach. First off was the $14 million salary (3.18 draft spots and 12.7% of the total payroll), but what scares me more is that he had a season ending concussion (which f***** my fantasy team) and that Morneau went to a team that already had a high priced first baseman. Even in a regular fantasy draft this 5th round pick would have worried me, but in a salary capped league with another more expensive 1B, I think it was a reach. However, Divinity turned Pujols into Lincecum which shed salary and upgraded his team, so it worked out in the end.

 

Jed Lowrie Utility: Jed Lowrie was taken in the 10th round, and was the latest pick taken of anyone I labeled a reach. He has the ability to be very good, but makes JD Drew and AJ Burnett look durable. He's the switch hitting (and skinnier) Nick Johnson. I don't think he's a good fit for a starting role and while his salary is good, I don't see him being worthy of a first half pick and I doubt that he would be taken this early if this was a Yankee fan board.

 

Ervin Santana SP: When Ervin Santana is your first pitcher taken, you're in trouble. He costs 8 million I believe and was taken in the 4th round.

 

Daric Barton 1B: Barton came cheap, but he doesn't fit the stereotype hitter for a 1B, and was taken way too early in the 6th round. He can get on base, but not too much else. In addition, as mentioned before, 1B is a very deep position, and Barton was taken before many better options.
