But I'm sure the Sox could find someone to lead off.

You don't remember the post-Damon era very well, I take it? Top notch leadoff men do not grow on trees.

Actually though, Pedroia has led off before and there's no reason he can't do it again. He's an ideal 2-hitter but in the absence of an ideal one-hitter he can serve.

I really don't see Lee as a realistic option. We have way too much money invested in Beckett and Lackey to justify adding a huge FA pitcher when we have more pressing needs on offense.

If they let the Yankees get him, they will not be able to compete with the Yankees for 3-4 years. That is not acceptable. They'll have to find a way.

I still think they'll stand pat with their rotation. I've seen enough good in the back three of this rotation to think positively for next season. The team only needs one or two of them to perform around career levels, and that will give them an elite rotation, with what next year will likely be a completely revamped elite bullpen. Unless they can get good money for Dice-k, I think they have greater needs to be filled.

The Sox need to add offense. I believe the pitching rotation is strong enough to still contend with the Yankees regardless if Lee is in the rotation or not. The Yankees may have more "star" power, but still allowed the Red Sox AAAA team to stay within striking distance up until the last week of the season.

I think Lee is an unlikely option. I think the Red Sox will be in on him to drive up the price on Lee for the Yankees. That is all.

So a700, you think the sox should go all in on Lee?

Here's the deal, the Yankees have the offense. They have the pen. They can resign their guys as well at either the same or lower cost. Their only flaw is in the rotation. They have an ace. They have a pretty solid #3 in Hughes. Their only major need is a #2 and Lee fits that immediately. When have the Yankees lost their guy in free agency when he fills a massive need? Now, they have made decisions when 2 guys come available, but for now, Lee is the marquee pitcher on the market and he costs a draft pick and cash. There is no way in hell the sox outbid NY.

No s*** captain obvious.

I meant someone league average at least.

I think Texas has a better shot at signing him then the Red Sox do. If the Sox get an impact pitcher I think it will be through trade. As far as I'm concerned Lee is a Ranger or Yankees next year. With the Nationals being a dark horse contender.

I'm sure you don't mean the aspersion on Pedroia that your post reads to be.

Look at the posts above before you respond. The idea that Theo is going to get the green light to pull Lee away from NYY is ridiculous. I will tell you this much. If NY loses this series and if Lee wins a deciding game 7, there is no way in hell the Yankees lose him to any team. Nothing adds zeroes to the paycheck like knocking out the biggest wallets in the game on a postseason run

I just heard on WEEI that Larry Luchino said that "we'll do our due diligence on Cliff Lee".

Whatever that means. I suspect he was just saying what he believed fans want to hear without making a commitment.

He also said that "the right field fence will be moved in six feet". Interesting. I'm sure it's all in their ongoing effort to enhance the fan experience at America's most beloved ballpark!

Hey, don't shoot the messenger! If you read my entire post you've no doubt sensed my skepticism.

 We know that will pretty much amount to the Sox throwing him an offer that they know he won't accept and then hit the media with their usual "we just can't compete with the Evil Empire financially".

I don't like moving in the RF fence.

Me either.

It seams like a major change for little gain. And I like the way right field plays at Fenway.

I agree on the Rangers or Yankees thing. The Yankees are going to outbid the Rangers by over $10 million total contract value. The question is whether he takes it

I get the strange feeling that whoever wins the ALCS gets Cliff Lee. It probably helps Texas in that Lee has been moving to a different team every six months and is probably tired of it.

I want Cliff Lee as much as the next guy, but I think we should all show a little restraint. We're talking about the Yankees giving a CC Sabathia contract to a guy going into his age 32 season. I believe that I refered to Cliff Lee to a friend yesterday as a "god", so I understand he's a great addition, but his contract would still stand a chance of being very overblown by the time all is said and done. If it is a bidding war between the Yankees and the MLB/new TV network-backed Rangers, then the price will be HIGH.

In my heart of hearts I would want them to go after Lee, but I just don't see it happening. The upside to that is my hope that the Sox do decide to add another ace pitcher and take the best available arm not named Lee. If that means trading for a Zack Greinke (27) or bidding on Yu Darvish (24) at a price that lets them also add Crawford/Werth, re-sign Beltre, maybe Martinez, and next year acquire Gonzalez or Fielder, I think the team could be better off in the longrun.

apparantly its the last year that their doing repairs at Fenway the FO thinks its good enough for another 30-40 years

I was at a LL speaking event this year and he said just that. All he added was that when they are done it will be something like $200M that they've spent and that it is not just the FO that thinks it has 30-40 years left, it is also city and independent engineers.

I feel almost the exact same way. The only thing that puts me off on Lee is the age. That deal is going to look sketchy by the end of it.

a700, you don't like any kind of change :D

The Sox have a LHH heavy lineup. And any power bat they have in the minors or have talked about acquiring is LH(Prince, Agon). I can't see how this hurts them really. I like it. I've always felt the RF fence(mid left, not down the line) was too far back and really killed LHH's.

.

Improvement is the kind of change that I like. O like all of the improvements that have been made to Fenway thus far. I don't like messing with the field dimensions which have been the same since Ted Williams second season. Those unchanging dimensions are part of the historical charm of the place. Add to that the possibility that it will start playing like a bandbox, and I see nothing positive about it.

The improvements they should be focusing on are:

Improving the bullpen.

Improving the OF (Hello, Mr Werth).

Improving Beckett and Lackey (by fixing the conditioning program)

And keeping V-Mart.

That is all.
