Probably not much' date=' the team still should sell out next year no matter what, it's only in the next couple that there's any risk of that really changing. A team's prestige doesn't disappear with one bad season, we proved that in 2007.[/quote']

True, true.

But I'm sure adding a well-known, HoF Yankee to the Sox would definitely cause an increase in profits from tix, merch, TV, etc. And this fact, I'm sure is being weighed to some extent by Henry & Co.

There is arguably no other non-Sox player in all of MLB better known to Sox fans than Jeter. Add to the potential earning benefits of bringing Jeter on board, the hatred towards the Yanks, the rejuvenated rivalry that would ensue, the chase for 3K and the likely need for a 3B come 2011, there are some things to consider here.

While there are undoubtedly several better uses for the kind of coin it would take to land Jeter, there are some intangible "business related" qualities to the deal, that might make a sliver of sense.

That said, I really hope they don't sign him. But if they do, I must admit, it'd be fun to see how it plays out.

I definitely agree that Jeter would be a fun signing to stick it to the Yanks.

But as I mentioned earlier... if the Sox want to seriously overpay on a player to screw over the Yankees, that player is Cliff Lee.

I guess warped minds think alike' date=' a700. We both saw Sheff's screed above and our first thought was "well maybe we could put him in the mix at 3B"[/quote']When did you start to realize that I am warped? Do you think the others know?

IMO, the Jeter thing would be exponentially worse on the hurt meter.

I know you hope it is
I am suspecting that it might be, but I am hoping that it is not. Everyday I am begging them to sign Carl Crawford, so I am clearly hoping this is not a FO propaganda piece.

Only you could read that time filling blog piece and consider it a "propaganda" piece that was laid there by the FO to for warn us they aren't going to spend

To me it seems this ownership group has shown they will invest more money then anyone outside of Yankee land. If they don't go and blow their wad now, doesn't mean they are going to stuff it into their mattress's and never spend it ever again.

I've been saying for awhile I won't be upset if they don't go and splurge this offseason and instead put it away for a better long term investment next off season, i.e. Agon or maybe even Pujols. Now if they decide to not pursue one of the more hefty contacts this off season and still lose out on Agon or Pujols because of money, my attitude will be very different.

There's nothing else to talk about. I too have to fill my time talking something about the Sox. If they would just get going and start making some moves, I wouldn't bother to read such stuff.

It's still extremely early in the offseason.

Lackey signed Dec 16

Drew signed Dec 7

Lugo signed Dec 6

Beltre signed Jan 6

Cameron signed Dec 16

other big FA signings recently

Holliday signed Jan 7

Bay signed Dec 30

K-Rod signed Dec 10

Sabathia signed Dec 10

Tex signed Dec 23

Burnet signed Dec 12

The list goes on and on but by and large the big FAs don't sign till mid-late Dec or later. If we haven't done anything by Christmas then yes be worried that maybe we aren't going to spend, but for now just relax because it's still extremely early.

It seems so much longer this year, because we have been in hot stove season since the first week of August.

Buchholz, Lester, Cliff Lee, Becket, Lackey.

Sabathia, Burnett, Pettite, Hughes, Nova.

I don't think picking up a past-his-prime middle infielder for 20 million a year is quite the blow of the humiliation the Sox would cause with that monster rotation.

Is this story a plant to keep the fans from complaining if they don't make any major acquisitions?

Or maybe this is the plant story. It's on some obscure website called redsox.com so it may just be some know-nothing crack-pot writing out of his behind:

A .600 hitter middle infielder isn't going to help us that much. So far' date=' Vmart is really the only top player to sign, so we can still be patient... for now.[/quote']I was just having some fun. There is nothing to talk about. We've beat Crawford vs. Werth thing to death.

It definitely would be a good sign to see them sign some fill-ins(ones that will actually make the major league roster even) like their 6th inning pitcher, for example.

I know people who are talking about bringing in Derek Jeter are doing so out of boredom and all, but please allow me to illustrate how i feel about that.

In my opinion:

There's stupid, then there's a straight guy getting drunk at a gay bar, there's having sexual intercourse with animals, there's YOTN's sexual activities preference, there's being a Yankee fan, there's being a Pink Hat Yankee fan, then there's bringing Derek Jeter to the Sox.

I hope this sufficiently explained my thoughts on the matter.

Dunn Seeks Four Years, $60MM

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 30, 2010 at 4:15pm CST]

The agent for Adam Dunn is telling teams that he expects the bidding for the free agent to start at four years and $60MM, according to Yahoo’s Jeff Passan. Dunn settled for a two-year, $20MM deal the last time he was a free agent, but two years and 76 homers later, Greg Genske is looking for much more.

Dunn has been one of baseball’s most dangerous sluggers since breaking into the majors a decade ago. The 31-year-old, who has hit at least 38 homers in each of the past seven seasons, will likely decline the Nationals’ offer of arbitration later tonight. That will mean the team that signs him will have to surrender a top draft pick (assuming he leaves Washington).

I think this is a little expensive.
