I'm not holding my breath on getting a pick for Lopez. He barely scrapped together a one year deal last season coming off a fairly good year. He wasn't very good this season. I would be surprised if someone gives him a ML deal. I expect him to get a minor league deal with an invite to ST.

I think he'll be fine sitting on someone's bench. Being able to play EVERYTHING works in his favor, and he did hit .800 in 2009. Its not like anyone has to lose picks for him, just a tiny contract. And he's only 30. One year at 1 or 2 million is a bargain considering he has a little bit of speed and a little bit of power and can play everything.

I agree. But the league apparently doesn't. He signed a very low one year offer last year after little interest was show in him. And that was coming off a decent year. I'm not saying it's impossible or anything like that. If someone doe sign him to a Major League deal, i won't be at all surprised. But logic tells me a guy coming off a decent season and struggling to find a one year gig will have even more trouble finding as good or better offer a year later off a worse season. But the market is different this season it would seem. Maybe I'm not giving that enough weight.

Player values fluctuate in strange ways sometimes. Look at how similar Adam Dunn's numbers were, and look at the difference in his last two contracts. I wouldn't be surprised if the Red Sox wanted him back-- although I know for sure they'd rather the draft pick.

Big news just dont understand why he would sign such a long deal for not that much when he could for sure make more on the market when he becomes a FA

Because he has a grand total of 1.059 years of service time, meaning he would still be under team control for five more years, and a seven year deal would buy out only two years of Free Agency, and quite possibly at market price.

Not to mention the importance of financial security and avoiding arbitration and similar hassles.

OR security in case he isn't what he looked like he was this year longterm after the league is used to him. I don't think the kid's gonna fall off the face of the earth but if he does, he has some protection of his livelihood.

He played 80 games in 2008, 80 in 2009, and a full season in 2010. Cots says 1.059 years of service, but that's probably pre-2010. They have him pegged for 1 cheap year, 3 arbitration and that makes sense.

500k for 2011, 3 arbitration years, likely averaging around 3/30 because Boras is his agent, plus 3 years at the going price for elite outfielders 3/70. So it looks like the Rockies will be paying 80 million for a 100 million dollar deal, and Car-gon gets paid earlier and gets security 4 years early. I think they both come away winners here.

I don't think his agent his anything to do with it. An arbitration panel decides based upon his value (usually comparing it to contracts signed by similar free agents), and they weight it based upon what year of arbitration he's in. I forgot how it goes exactly, but it's like 30/60/90 or something similar. But it comes out to a similar number, I think.

Reds To Sign Jeremy Hermida

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 3 at 11:08pm CST]

The Reds agreed to sign Jeremy Hermida to a minor league deal, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

Good luck to them.

Would've liked to see Buchholz back.

Given the track record of our castoffs, I guess it is possible that Hermida hits 40 home runs next year and Delcarmen posts an ERA under 2.

Boras always try's to maximize his clients return year to year for the players in arbitration. Because of this he typically goes to the arbitration panel(I don't have the actual % in front of me, just going off the top of my head, I could be completely wrong) and that usually winds up netting more then what the team was offering. So although a panel may ultimately decide the $ amount, he typically gets them more money by waiting it out. So he has something to do with the process.

I think Boras can get him 8 million his first arbitration year. Then 10, then 12. Boras being his agent simply means he gets the max value he can-- lots of other agents don't squeeze like he does.

I am pretty sure that when you go to arbitration, the team comes in with one number, the player comes in with their number, and a judge chooses which number is more reasonable. From what I understand, there is no negotiation or compromise, it's either A or B.

The players' number will always be higher than what the team was offering. I would guess that Boras knows more about when to go to the arbitration panel than he does about actually influencing it. He's very shrewd at understanding when is the best time to maximize player value - just look at Beltre and his contract with the Sox, and his contract now. I very much doubt that he affects the panel itself, however.

I saw on ESPN(the scrolling news feed at the bottom) saying that Daniels has informed Young most of his AB's are going to be at DH. Young is said to be okay with it.
