If the window is up' date=' how are they still talking with him? Thought I read that they didn't request a extension.[/quote']

Either it's an extension. Or they completed the deal and aren't letting it out yet. At which point they can "talk" to Agon all they want.

I think it would be smart to completely cave on years and money, just throw in an injury clause for the shoulder. If he's getting what he wants money-wise and year-wise, and the Sox find a way to protect themselves, I see zero reasons not to sign him to 36.

That's an ambiguous quote that could have gone either way, smartass!

GoBruins needs to learn from you and be cautiously optimistic instead of "So obviously pessimistic that he looks like a Yankee fan in disguise".

I said that early yesterday morning in response to BSN's plea for someone to celibate with.

At that point, reports were that AdGone had flown to Boston. So, while a good sign, nothing of substance had happened. You'll notice that I was not jumping for joy during the past 32 or so hours. I 've seen to many things go wrong (not just sports/baseball) to get too excited just because the media says something is about to happen. Until it happens, I just take it all in.

While I'm very disappointed, I have to believe the ball is still in play here. At the very least, what ORS says makes a lot of sense. And we don't know where the sticking point was and how far apart they are at this point.

And why is everyone so quick to condemn Theo for what has happened? Again, we have no direct knowledge off the negotiations. And as far as I know, Theo is charged with "shopping for the groceries", not writing the big checks. If the Sox are being "cheap" here, it's likely not his fault. That goes on the Owners.

About two months ago I posted that I didn't think AdGone would be coming to the Sox. This, after reading an article regarding conversations that Hoyer had had with AdGon's rep. The article said that Adgon wanted a "Tex" deal (8/180). Well, the Sox have never signed a player for 8 years. It's not how they roll (historically).

Which leads me to one question, If the Sox were aware of this, why go this far and not make it happen?

I hope there is no ambiguity in this post.;)

First of all, let's stop saying the Sox NEED to spend more than they've offered across the board because the Nationals shocked everyone in baseball with their deal. I'm willing to bet they regret that soon.

Also, the only reason the Nationals do that is because players DON'T WANT TO GO TO DC TO PLAY FOR A s***** TEAM IN THE NL EAST. The Sox aren't in that position and have plenty of players who will happily play with them.

That doesn't bode well for Crawford, should bode fine for Gonzalez (not getting him isn't acceptable) and obviously Werth is off the table.

Maybe AGON's agent got word of the Werth deal at the last minute and they are trying to get a better offer??????

The FO needs a new policy.

"We will shot down every rumor as completely baseless until the player has a Red Sox jersey on at the podium. Until then, Gordon Edes or Buster Olney or Peter Abraham can do nothing but cause us trouble with our fans."

Yesterday they could have come out or tweeted "I haven't heard the deal is done and it isn't over until it is completely over".

They don't need to do a lot of handholding all of the time with us, but something to keep expectations from blowing through the roof would be wise.

I'm coming back to a place of sanity now...

I will say this. I don't think what happened was the worst case scenario. I think that the worst case scenario would be one of two things.

1. We sign a huge long term deal and Gonzalez's shoulder injury proves troublesome and he doesn't perform like in past years.

Or (what I think could have happened)

2. The trade gets accepted and goes through, and then the Sox and Gonzalez don't agree to a deal so he leaves and we only get 2 draft picks despite losing Kelly, Rizzo, and Fuentes which puts us behind in prospects and talent.

I'd rather them cancel the trade if Gonzalez isn't going to sign long term than to accept the trade and risk losing him after the season. I don't want to give up Kelly, Rizzo, and Fuentes for a 1 year rental.

Pete Abraham (Globe) is questioning whether the 2 pm deadline was imposed by MLB, the Red Sox, or just an arbitrary time that the media came up with. Seems no one at Fenway mentioned that it was a must to finish it by then... MLB usually grants 72 hours for a sign/trade deal to get done... if the deal finished up overnight on Friday, the Sox still have plenty of time to make this happen.

The Thing with Werth is that the Nationals now are looking really good for the future. They need one more player aka Carlos Pena. they will have a dirty lineup assuming Harper is up in 2012. Imagine. Werth, Pena and Harper and Strasburg in the Rotation in 2012.

Nothing but speculation right now from the Media. Nothing concrete. Lets wait for an official report before we blow up completely. This deal could still get done.

If Gonzo goes off with a monster year and we get back to the WS and win it, would you really care if he was a one year rental?

I wouldn't. Winning cures everything.

My thoughts exactly.

I'm sure you meant to say this but this current ownership hasn't signed a player to an 8 year deal. Duquette gave Manny 8 years.

Why not request a small negotiating window to see if you can get him caught up in the moment and jump at a good not great deal? Agon didn't bite. No big deal. Now Theo can complete the trade with a better understanding of what it will take to sign him and have a year to get it done. People are bailing after 24 hours of negotiation where a deal got basically 90% done. I wouldn't think it would be unreasonable to assume they can finish that last 10% in the 11 month window have after trading for him.

Let's not forget they Sox don not negotiate like the Yankees. They where never going to come in with there top offer and not try and haggle. It's just not how they operate. If anyone(this is to the board at large not directed at you Spud) has failed to realize that at this point and is upset, that's a you problem.

And by the way I was excited when it was Agon just being traded to the Sox. All this extension mess came soon there after :D

My opinion on this for what it's worth... Personally, I just don't see how it gets this far and then they call it off completely just like that. Theo has been in love with Gonzo for years now... no way he lets him walk for $20 million or less overall in the deal. That has to be the ownership, if indeed that deal is off completely.

In the end, I still think a deal gets done, and regardless, I won't go apeshit over this.

I'm just trying to catch up with this thread. I was gone for about 45 minutes becuase I had an encounter with my Ex-wife (the evil one)!

My previous post now seems redundant. But I agree with you.

Has the FO actually made a public statement about Agon? All I remember was a bunch of reporters reporting the deal, which basically got confirmed by the "extension window" story. I don't recall the Sox FO actually making a statement. I could be wrong though, I came in late and was skimming hard :D

nothing has been confirmed by either side.

Then it would appear they are already operating under Ex1 perimeters.

Never made a statement. In the future I'm asking for them to make ANTI statements whenever something like this happens. Pedroia, Youkilis etc., are all already on board as having commented about adding Gonzalez.

Remember when Millar talked about how much better A-Rod was than Nomar? That was embarassing.

Im sorry but I fail to see the reason why they shouldn't sign Gonzalez for the extra 2 years.

Ya get back to me when he's 37-38.

Jut like it would have been no big deal to give Papi 2 extra years on his last extension. that would look beautiful right now

There has been no official statement at all. Not from the Sox or Padres confirming a trade agreement. Nor from AGons agent or the Sox saying the deal fell through. So we should all probably chill a bit.

No Statement doesnt mean they didnt make the trade either. They could have made the trade and are waiting to say anything after an extension is reached

LOL ok I see now. Millar was a tool. Great guy to probably be around though. Unless your Nomar that is.
