Upton had a stellar 2009 but his numbers across the board dropped off in 2010.

Why?

Was or is he injured?

I believe he had a shoulder injury, and was shut down for pretty much all of September.

MLBTR forwarding a tweet saying Joaquin Benoit signed with Detroit' date=' 3 years/16.5m. Damn, he's one of the better FA relievers out there. At least he didn't resign with TB. I imagine the 3 years was more than the FO was willing to do, though I hope $5.5 was within their budget.[/quote']

The sox better be willing to go to 5.5 mil. If they aren't then they aren't getting Downs

I'm sure it was more the 3 years then the 5.5M. I don't see them giving up a 1st rounder and a long term contract to any RP. Felicano may be a more likely LHP they pick up via FA.

He does seem to be a bit of an injury risk. He has missed significant time in each of his first three seasons. I hadn't really thought about this, but looking at it further it is a red flag of sorts.

Now with that in my head I just went and did a quick look at JD Drew's first 3-4 seasons in the league. They actually are reasonably comparable players. Although Upton has accomplished it at a younger age.

The yanks are apparently very interested in feliciano

Oh good, now Theo might be selling the farm for another JD Drew with real injury risks? This is why I'm saying don't sell the farm for anyone not named Albert, Hanley or Lincecum.

No but maybe this prohibits teams from wanting to give up the farm and possibly lowering his cost enough to where it wouldn't be such a big gamble :dunno:

Well from reading around today so far it looks like there are a decent amount of teams interested in Scutaro. Looks like Theo is trying to get BP help for him. Wouldn't mind trading him to SF for Casilla+Affeldt or Romo.

I guess they feel Lowrie can handle the spot until Iglesias is ready. Or they feel they can get by with Iglesias if Lowrie can't handle the full time duties.

Also it sounds like they are shopping Papelbon and getting some interest back. He could be part of a 3 team deal that lands the Sox Upton and maybe and other BP arm IMO.

ESPN Deportes reported Wednesday that Oakland offered a five-year, $64 million contract to Beltre

Ya so I'm pretty sure that ends all chances of Beltre coming back to Boston. They can take that 4/52M offer they had out there and offer it to V-Mart. Maybe even sweeten the deal some, 4/56 or even 4/60. I think he stays in Boston for that.

At least 15 teams approached the D’Backs about Upton at the GM Meetings and five of those clubs wanted to push talks further along, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, who notes that the Yankees were not one of the five clubs in hot pursuit of the outfielder.

Teams I have seen mentioned most, Blue Jays, Marlins, Mariners, Red Sox, Rockies

Hey everyone, back from a hiatus. I've been reading this forum daily though. Like a sick religion!

Anyway, Upton has me intrigued. If he can pull a Reggie and figure out how not to strike out so much, I think he has massive potential and would be worth quite a bit to get. Some of the suggestions I'm seeing on this board seem too low. Of course, I'd be happy with dealing some of those suggestions, but it's Kevin Towers we're dealing with here. The dude's relentless and in a real good position, deal-wise.

I think it might come to something like this: Bard/Els/Casey/Doubront

My only concern with that echoes what Palodios said. It's gonna take some serious coin, perhaps 8M/yr to fill Bard's cost-controlled role.

Seems like a lot to give for the semi-unknown entity, Upton, but unfortunately, I think that's about all Towers will accept, unless we work a 3rd team into the mix, which seems like a strong possibility.

It'll be interesting to watch this play out.

All these comments from Red Sox ownership give me the feeling they want more big names/personalities for this team to generate more excitement for the team. I'm curious if they'd consider Jeter just for revenue.

They'd have to blow the Yankee offer out of the water to get Jeter to consider it. They are already offering 3/$45 million. Sox might have to go to 4/$66 million. I don't see it happening. If he could still perform offensively, I'd support it, but he looked bad last season.

Right, but that's not all. Its about tv ratings and intangibles. The Red Sox lost about a third of their viewership from last year. The ownership wants it back. It is about a 0.0001% chance, but I'm sitting at work bored, and I figured I'd throw it out there.

Even if it did happen, Sox fans wouldn't embrace him. Jim Edmonds played well for the Cubs in 2008, but fans were very slow to acknowledge his contributions.

I think Jeter can squeeze a 4th year out of the yankees.Money has never been a problem with them so why is it now? They are still paying some bad contracts.

I heard the Yankees put their foot down at 3/45. You never know how negotiations will go.

He should be happy and take it, on the market he'd get 2/20 at best

If he comes to the Sox and plays well, we'll cheer him like crazy and make the Yankee fans sick. If he stinks, we'll boo him relentlessly and blame the despicable Yankee dog for everything, making Yankee fans cry for him. It would be a no lose proposition!

I want Jeter nowhere near SS for the Red Sox. Or 3B for that matter. He is not worth the $. This sounds like a move for a desperate organization. I don't see the Sox as that. They lost viewers last season because some casual fans don't want to watch the Red Sox AAA team. Viewership will be back up next season. They don't need to add Jeter to do that. 10 years ago it would have been the steal of the century. Now it would be like marrying the home coming queen from your high school after shes had 4 kids with 4 different baby's daddy. You can say your married to the homecoming queen, but shes got a bulging waist line and not many good miles left on her. Plus now your stuck paying for her 4 little bastards to boot.

No thanks to Jeter.

He should be happy that AJ Burnett makes more money and got a longer contract despite his suckiness? I don't think so.

The consequence for the Yankees blowing every other FA out of the water these past few years should be that they have to pay Jeter what he wants. It only seems fair from my point of view.

Of course Peter Abraham's blog had no influence on your idea.;)

I concur.

It won't happen. But it would be fun if the Sox made overtures and drove the price up for the Yankees.

Pretty much.

Ultimately, Jeter is worth 2/16 - 2/18.

It's fun to consider. But the Sox would be better to move on here.
