The Angels have little reason not to pull him back. They still have a couple years control of the guy. Unless Theo already has a working agreement on a trade that would involve a significant Boston asset going the other way' date=' I don't think it happens.[/quote']Why would they waive the guy if they have no reason to move him?

Downs on trade waivers

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff August 25, 2010 05:15 PM

Manny Ramirez went on trade waivers today, but the one name who also hit the waiver wire who could be of interest to Boston is Toronto's lefty reliever, Scott Downs.

He's been atop Boston's wish list from the start, but the Sox couldn't work out a deal for him at the non-waiver trade deadline. The Jays put him on trade waivers today and it would be shocking if the Red Sox didn't place a claim. Question is will the Jays' demands for him come down? Or, would another team with a worst record beat Boston to the punch? Downs will be a free-agent.

he's gonna get claimed by almost anyone' date=' especially since he's a type A[/quote']

i agree. but it makes you wonder what toronto was thinking in not trading him at the deadline if they're going to explore a trade for him now

After tonite we got get another bat if we are going make a run at this

If the Sox really thought they had a chance and wanted to make a run at this, wouldn't they have done so a month ago?

I think they threw in the towel on this team. I don't buy any of the excuses about how prices were too high etc. All of the other contenders made lots of moves. Even the bankrupt Rangers made a bunch of moves. There will be no last minute moves for this team.

i agree with you guys. i think they realized that while they had a good team on paper, not even the best regular season teams in the history of baseball could make up this much ground if half of their lineup went on the disabled list and their #2 and #3 starter going into the year were having the worst years of their career

I said this after the deadline and got s*** on. I also said I wont buy tickets for another game this year....and got s*** on.

Why care about an organization that doesnt give a f*** about the product it puts on the field? How are those midseason acquisitions working out? You know....when they said their deadline deals will be getting Beckett, Ellsbury and Pedroia back. Howd that work out? What a load of crap.

You know the worst thing of all? If this is a bridge year, then what is next year? They have a shitload of work to do to bring back all their players to keep the team as it is now, and we know they arent good enough this year. Next year could be ugly.

EDIT: Then the front office tried bring back Damon, not because they wanted him back.....but because he might have increased profits. They could have signed him last offseason. Instead they signed Mike Cameron. Johnny Damon was only claimed to keep the pink hats showing up at the park.

Threw in the towell? Despite having half the freakin team on the D.L. throughout the year. This so called bad franchise is only five games back from the wild card. Not bad considering. So they made no waiver or trade deadline moves this year. So what!

So you are ok with not replacing injured players at the deadline and doing nothing to improve yourself? You are ok with third place and paying the highest prices in tickets and concessions. Maybe you should root for the Pirates. They dont do s*** year in and year out and have no problem finishing 3rd or worse year in and out.

I am not ok with it.

I hate the Yankees......but their front office would NEVER let this happen to them. A bridge year does not exist in NY.....in Boston weve dealt with this s*** twice now since 2004.

For all the moves we've made the past severall years. How much better did it actually make us? Talkin trade deadline and waiver wire moves now. Not very! We brought in Martinez last year. Who is by far the worst defensive catcher I've ever seen. Gagne was a mistake, and I sure do wish David Murphy was an option. Bay and maybe Wagner are about the only moves we've made that have amounted to anything. At least since the Garciaparra trade. So What difference does it really make? I guess they shoud just make some type of move just to do it. That way they can be like Nike.

Martinez is one of the best hitting catchers in baseball. Vmart is not that bad, in fact he has improved. Worst ever? You must be 10 years old because you would have seen Scott Hatteberg or Mike Stanley. Ever hear of a guy named Jorge Posada? He plays on a rival team of ours, forget their team name though. He sucks pretty bad too, and we see plenty of him. Mike Piazza made a HOF career of being a sucky catcher.

The year they got Gagne they won the world series. David Murphy who? Ill take Gagne and a world series title.

This year they did nothing. Again, if you are ok with third place thats fine. This is the wrong market for third place.

If Manny doesn't go to the White Sox he could probably end up with the Texas Rangers or Tampa Bay Rays who had scouts in San Bernardino and Los Angeles when Ramirez played there last week

In all fairness, the last none playoff season was followed by reshuffling of the roster and a WS title.

They wanted the equivalent of a 1st rounder and a supp for him. They know that he's leaving and they are going to offer arb

You ask 5 different guys what we should have done at the deadline, you get 5 different responses. Our needs included a pitcher, power bat, outfielder, catcher, leadoff hitter. How many holes do you think you're going to fill at the deadline? At some point the best plan is just to play through and fix it in the offseason.

Very good point. I believe the Yankees revamped after 2008 and finishing third as well.

I agreed with you then and I agree now. I have been asking your bridge question all season long. A bridge to who and when? Do we have a group of players in our system that will take the majors by storm in 2011 like Pedroia and Lester, etc.? I am not seeing them. I am unaware of them. How much of this bridge plan depended on Westmoreland? That part of the bridge is gone. Was it a bridge to retooling through fre agency, because so much money is coming off the books after this season? I've seen the FA list and other than Cliff Lee and Carl Crawford (probably Yankees) I don't see much other than Werth. I suspect the bridge was meant to be to our young players, because I read or heard that Theo said that they should be able to field a good young team by 2012. Who are they, and does this mean 2011 is going to suck too?

i really hope new york does not get lee and crawford

i dont think we will suck cuz the rays will be not as good w/o pena and crawford

new york can't afford to get both lee and crawford, they can barely afford to sign lee

they couldn't afford to spend more than $2 million to sign damon last year. what makes you think they can afford to spend $40+ million to sign lee and crawford? they have other holes to fill at shortstop, dh, the rotation, the bench and their bullpen
