And to further that point...

We're coming up on the end of the season. Granderson has shown his true stripes. Here's the split

.276/.359/.529 with an .888OPS vs righties

.214/.252/.286 with a .538OPS vs lefties

Time to look at him for what he is

Back to the Berkman deal, I have a feeling both sides will actually get something out of it. The Yankees will get a half season of an elite level bat before he saunters off into the sunset and the Stros get one guy who will be in their pen for awhile and a SS who could very well be their franchise SS in the future.

But then again, Berkman adds a ton of consistency to this lineup. He adds a power threat and a guy who will work the count and be a professional hitter in every AB. I love the acquisition and am happy with what we gave up

The Yanks are apparently working towards bringing in Ted Lilly. Nothing imminent. Lilly's numbers this yr were a lot better than I expected

117IP 89K 3.69ERA 1.14WHIP

Lilly is a nice move for the rest of the regular season, but he's likely a non-factor when the playoffs roll around (if the Yankees make it). He might not even make the playoff rotation, and if he does, he's a marginal upgrade at best.

The "if we make the playoffs"

Getting Lilly would allow for the Yankees to do with Hughes what you want them to do. Our top 4 of CC-Pettitte-AJ-Vazquez is better than any top 4 in the AL sans TB. Our offense is the best in baseball. And our closer is the best of all time. Getting Lee or Haren would have made things nicer, but as it stands, we have the best shot of taking it all. Doesnt mean we will, but we have the best chance, IMO

There is no guarantee that the Yankees make the playoffs. You happen to think the Red Sox are done. I don't.

I think the Red Sox have too big of a deficit to overcome to catch the Yankees. Especially now that the Yankees have shored up the offense.

Sure, and that's a reasonable opinion. But I don't see how you can knock anyone for thinking the Yankees aren't guaranteed to make the playoffs.

I really do not know how you fit through doors with your ego.

How should he have been used

The tribe wasn't that strong in the OF position this year...they didn't want to bring up brantley too fast.

A.J. Burnett: 4.52 ERA, 6.82 K/9, 3.71 BB/9, nothing in his peripherals to suggest bad luck (aside from a slightly higher-than-normal .313 BABIP)

Javier Vazquez: 4.54 ERA, 7.23 K/9, 3.45 BB/9, 33.7% GB rate, ridiculously low BABIP of .255 (even for a fly ball pitcher)

I'm sorry...but what? Lester, Buchholz, a disappointing Lackey, and an inconsistent Dice-K have been far better. Add in a healthy Beckett and a string of good starts by Lackey and Dice-K, and this shouldn't even be a discussion.

Yankees rotation minus Hughes- 495.1IP 457H 205ER 181BB 392K 3.72ERA 1.28WHIP 7.1K/9IP 2.17K/BB

Sox rotation minus Beckett- 470IP 420H 181ER 184BB 373K 3.47ERA 1.29WHIP 7.1K/9IP 2.03K/BB

K/9IP are identical. IP are more. K/BB is slightly better. WHIP is identical. The only difference is ERA, which we all know is not the be all and end all of pitching stats. The peripherals are essentially the same. And the likelihood is that Beckett bumps one of those guys out for a rotation spot. While Hughes has been our third best pitcher on the yr

The Sox rotation without Beckett has had a revolving door of starters in his place (Wakefield, Doubront, etc), whereas the Yankees starters that have started in place of Pettite have made fewer starts (4 starts between Mitre and Mosley, while Wakefield has already made 16 starts of 5.56 ERA ball). And Beckett has been pitching hurt, which nukes his numbers to career lows; given how he's performed coming off the DL, I'd expect to see numbers closer to his career norm.

Also, I thought it was "be all end all"? (I'm not being a grammar snark here, I'm actually not sure but that's how I thought the phrase was used)

WHY IS CLEVELAND GOING TO PAY MOST OF THE MONEY? THE YANKEES PAYROLL IS LIKE 300 MILLION!?!?!!

Why would cleveland want a player who has more injuries than saves in his career?

Those numbers only include DiceK, Lester, Buchholz, and Lackey. I omitted Wakefield and Doubront
