No answers from Ellsbury

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff August 18, 2010 04:02 PM

Jacoby Ellsbury said he was examined in California and re-broke the rib in his back.

He then walked away, refusing to take questions.

More to come on this.

UPDATE, 4:19 p.m.: Terry Francona offered a muddled explanation, saying the injury is in the same area but that it wasn't clear whether it was a new break or a re-injury.

At best he's out 4-6 weeks and that's essentially the rest of the season.

Francona said he did not know whether Ellsbury would stay with the team.

That has to suck. Sounds like Ellsbury's pretty upset. I hope he's not getting the kind of hate mail I'm afraid he's getting. This whole mess isn't his fault.

Kid has had some tough luck the year.

Hate mail? Are you serious? Do they even open their own mail? I would think they get lots of requests for autographs etc., but hate mail? I haven't heard of a player getting hate mail since Hank Aaron. Well...maybe Buckner.

Cameron is done too. Wow. Kalish will be getting a good amount of playing time from here on out.

Hawpe and Beltran are the only OF's to clear waivers so far. Slim pickings...

Last year, a bunch of stories came out about black cubs players receiving hate mail. It's not surprising considering the cubs stink and the are their fans are congregated (Illinois, Iowa, Indiana).

I can't believe Boston fans are sending lots of hate mail to Ellsbury.

Unreal but par for the season.......

Salty goes on DL; Brown is recalled

Jarrod Saltalamacchia has an infection of some sort and Dusty Brown was called up.

More info as it becomes available.

UPDATE. 4:19 p.m.: Just when you think nothing else can go wrong with this team. Saltalamacchia had a sore lower right leg yesterday and was sent over to Mass General to get it checked on.

Turns out it's an infection. Tests have ruled out the MRSA virus. They're checking on staph now. He's in the hospital hooked up to IV antibiotics.

The hope is Saltalamacchia will feel better in a day or two. But in the meantime, the Sox needed a catcher and Brown was called up.

Wow. This teams run of injuries borderlines on the absurd. It's a small miracle in itself that the team is still within contention for the playoffs.

Man, what a disease Nazi.

and unless he has an abscess that fluid was collected from, they cannot be sure it isnt MRSA. They probably checked for colonization with nasal swabs, but cellulitis can be present due to MRSA with the swabs being negative. That being said, most cellulitides are strep and are easily treated with oral antibiotics. The IV was overkill unless he had already failed an outpatient regimen

Oh, I doubt it too, but you never know. Maybe one of those sociopath callers to WEEI has figured out how write a letter or two, but it seems unlikely.

Pedroia out with pain in his previously injured foot. My guess is that if he cannot play tomorrow' date=' then he's set for another MRI and DL stint[/quote']Doctors told him that he would get some soreness. He doesn't seem concerned.

Coming down with a bad case of see-you-next-year on this roster. Combine the Pedroia thing with Saltalamacchia and Ellsbury I think it's time to confront the possibility that the Sox have started to mail it in and shut down any of their assets that they think are going to be more important to next year's run than this year's longshot.

The telltale would be if Daniel Bard went down with convenientexcuseitis or an inflammation of the inningslimit tendon sometine near the end of the month.

I hope you are wrong about this.

Why' date=' they aren't winning anything with Beckett and Lackey pitching like this?[/quote']

I must commend you ORS. You were one of the only people who actually confronted reality at the end of June when you said that the injuries were just too much to overcome. The pom pom wavers thought that idea was crazy
