I'm wondering, does anyone know where his nickname "Greek God of Walks" comes from? I mean, the nickname doesn't really fit when you think about it. Sure, he gets some walks, but he isn't one of those 100+ walks every season types of guys, heck, he hasn't once passed 100 walks in a season, he averages 70-80 a season. I'm not knocking the guy or anything, he's definitely one of my favorite sox, I just realized tonight that his nickname isn't actually that fitting.

Thanks Dipre... it sounds like the starter of this thread missed the early 2000's perhaps .

I didn't become a die-hard Sox fan until '02, before that I was just a casual fan. Took me until high-school to really get into sports.

And of course, he is not Greek. The "is" at the end of his name just fed the idea.

He is Jewish and his family is from Romania.

I think he got the name from setting that record for most consecutive games getting on base in the minors. He's not really Greek, his grandfather is Romanian and moved to Greece because Romania was persecuting jews or something, and changed his last name to a Greek name.

I think Mr. Potato Head is more appropriate.

Mr. Potato Head is an excellent name for Francona when he occasionally has those sleeping spells in the dugout as we're left wondering what the heck is going on.

Youkilis thanks Red Sox fans

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 9, 2010 05:23 PM

Here's a note to the fans from Kevin Youkilis:

I wish to say a very sincere "Thank you" to all who voted for me, and put forth such a valiant effort in trying to win for me the Final Vote for the 2010 All-Star Game.

I truly appreciate all the support you all have given me throughout my career, and continue to provide. It means the world to me to have received so many votes, and I would like you fans to know I am humbled, and most appreciative.

Keep rooting on the Sox! We hope to have a strong second half to push us into the playoffs once again. My deepest thanks to all of you, to the Boston Red Sox, and to Red Sox Nation.

Sincerely, Kevin Youkilis

Whatever his nickname, he wears his heart on his sleeve and you always know he's out there doing his best for us.

Most underrated hitter in the league, bar none. This guy's elite, and he never gets credit for being elite.

One of the best baseball players in the league. He's got it all, power, patience, defense, contact, even a little bit of baserunning speed.
