Gammons On The Red Sox

By Luke Adams [April 16 at 6:54pm CST]

Peter Gammons appeared today on WEEI's Big Show, and addressed a few Red Sox-centric topics. Ethan Landy of WEEI has the transcript, which includes these highlights:

•Victor Martinez continues to struggle throwing out opposing base-stealers, leading Gammons to speculate that the Red Sox may eventually have to call up Mark Wagner or look outside the organization for a defensive catcher. Otherwise, teams will run wild on Boston all season.

•The Sox may also need to look into acquiring middle relief help at some point this year. Gammons says that the club doesn't have any obvious minor league arms that they could bring up to pitch in important situations, like they did with Daniel Bard last season.

•If David Ortiz continues to struggle, Gammons thinks the Sox will have to seriously consider releasing him: "I don’t think they are going to keep him here and sit him on the bench."

I figure we could use this thread for in season rumors. I would assume that the sox would have a lot of rumors for the DH spot and the C spot this season. So here it is. The Mathis idea is interesting, although Scoscia loves him, even at the expense of Mike Napoli.

Okay, let's put it this way.

If you could go after one Angel catcher, who would it be, why and what would you be willing to give up.

Bear in mind, the Halos have a strong catching prospect in their 3rd string spot who is out of options

Yeah, no real desire to trade with the Angels over here. Anyone we deal will come back to haunt us in the playoffs. I'd rather deal with marginal contender like the Rangers or Diamondbacks, both of whom have quality catchers.

Jeff Mathis is an automatic out. No thanks.

Tell the Yankees that. They won't believe you.

Anyway, if they were to add a catcher, I guess that means no more Papi. Are there really any other alternatives?

Imagine, with all the talk of unloading Lowell, it's Papi who gets unloaded? That would be something.Papi is a hole in the middle of the lineup right now. He's leaving a ton of men on base, and should be much further down in the order than 5th. Let's go, Tito.

The team is off to a slow start, and it's clear it has issues to resolve--some of which Gammons alluded to.

Regarding stolen bases, I suspect it goes beyond VMart. More about pitchers holding runners on. That's policy. Maybe it's about Tito and his pitching coach. After all, VMart is probably an average or slightly below average catcher. The Mets got by with Piazza defensively for years. And things haven't improved going from Tek to Vmart. So, my guess it's more the pitchers. Or maybe that pitching coach, who looks more and more like he's overrated in the organization.

Epstein spent the whole pre-season improving the defense. Except for holding runners on. That's up to the field management.

The sox should just move second base 3 feet out into center field.

If Dunn was hitting at all, his name would have probably surfaced in some Red Sox rumors by now. The Sox will probably be active soon if not already. Agon still seems out of reach to me, unless SD's price comes down and I don't see why it wouldn't.

Just gonna toss some names around to watch for later this summer.

If Detroit falls out look for Magglio's name to get mentioned as trade bait. He could go to LF if they are trying to replace Cameron or DH if they are trying to replace Papi.

Doumit from the Pirates. AJ from the White Sox.

And I was looking at ESPN Insider the other day and I saw Sizemore's name mentioned as a possible target for the Sox(like he wouldn't be a target for most teams). I would rate it as a long shot similar to Agon with the price being just as high.

The sox dont have the parts to get Sizemore, well, not parts that Theo would consider dealing.

Getting Magglio gives them a worse defensive outfielder who forgot how to hit for power last yr. The sox need power, so that doesnt help

AJ Pierzynski is a terrible defensive catcher, so that doesnt fix the problem, as is Doumit

An interesting trade candidate for defensive minded catcher would be Henry Blanco of the Mets

The Mets are too dumb to realize they need to be sellers. They will probably be adding players at the TDL, not sending them packing.

Snyder would be a good acquisition. However, if they got him, I'm pretty sure it would spell the end for Ortiz because you'd still want to give V-Mart ABs, and the only way to do that would be to make him the DH. Or they could cut Varitek and V-Mart and Ortiz would share time as the DH. That seems less likely to happen.

The article says that 36 of the past 43 base stealers have been safe against Snyder during 09 and '10. I hope he brings something to the table defensively. Otherwise, I'm not going to get too excited about him coming here. Injury prone to boot. What's their resistence to trying some of their younger guys? Dusty Brown is 27 and Mark Wagner is 25, so it's not like they're kids, and they both have good defensive reputations. I would give them a shot before trading anything of value for Snyder.

Of course, I can be convinced otherwise with some useful arguments. I don't know Snder that well, but his career .333 OBP and .398 SLG don't give me a whole bunch of optimism unless he's like Pudge behind he plate.

Snyder sucks offensively and is horrible at throwing out runners as example1 mentioned, PASS.

Speaking of Pudge, can he still do it defensively? I haven't seen him defensively lately but he has been swinging a very hot stick lately and considering he's on the Nats, hes probably not going to cost a whole lot.

24% is better than 4% and Snyder has some pop.

What good is the 24% if it hasn't happened at that level for a few years?

I agree that they could stand to have someone who at least stands a CHANCE of getting a base stealer out. That's better than no chance/automatic doubles. I just think Wagner could provide that.

I dont doubt that Wagner would be a better defensive catcher. I just dont think the sox are ready to put an offensive black hole in their lineup, especially with Cameron and Jacoby on the DL
