It's a tough call, but I'd have to say Derek Jeter. Not only is he incredibly consistent at the plate, but he is full of defensive talent. Man is that guy fun to watch.

What do you all think? Have fun in this thread, guys.

Come here' date=' post this, clear troll. not even subtle about it.[/quote']

Give the guy a chance at least.

Slightly before my time but I hear good things about Honus Wagner

Let's see...it's tough to compare players in different eras.

Top four would be in my opinion:

Jeter, Ripken, Wagner, Ozzie Smith...kind of a pick'em.

Posted
Really? List ten better.

I'll stick with my broad sweeping statements, thanks.

Honus Wagner

A-Rod

Cal Ripken

Joe Cronin (red sox represent)

MAYBE Jeter but probably not.

So we can compromise and put him in the 6-8 range.

Joe Cronin? Seriously? Really? Wow...

That's like me saying that Ted Williams wasn't one of the greatest OFers...but Bernie Williams is.

It's an old running joke, but Derek Jeter isn't even the best shortstop on his own team.
Posted

Jeter is in the top group, but it's pretty crowded. His longevity helps him against current players who maybe played the position and hit better for a shorter time, like Arod, Nomar, Tejada, Hanley, etc.

Against the all-time greats, it's pretty hard to say he was better than Honus Wagner, Ernie Banks, Arky Vaughn, Joe Cronin, Joe Sewell or Cal Ripken. He's the Yankee version of Barry Larkin, perhaps a better hitter but not as good a glove. Definite Hall of Famer, obviously.

I never saw any of the really old timers play. And I never saw much of the NL either.

I always liked Louis Aparicio , Mark Belanger, Bert Campaneris, and Rico Petrocelli.

I'll take Honus Wagner, thank ya very much.

And his first post is bragging how good Jeter is, and how fun he is to watch. He basically blows his load over Jeter in his first post. If that's clear trolling, dunno what is.

And seriously, Jeter is god awful at defense.

God awful is an overstatement. He is average and has been above average at various times in his career. Yes, Jeter is one of the greatest shortstops of all time. Longevity, consistency, production. Closing in on 3,000 hits. Easily in the Top 10.

But I'll take Julio Lugo over him any day of the week.

He's closer to god-awful than he is to great. Most people judge him based on a couple of nice plays he made back about 5 or 6 years ago, and say "YEAH HE WAS A GREAT DEFENDER", but they miss the stats, which say he really isn't that great. I remember all the Yankee fans blowing their load over his awesome defense 'cause he made a really awesome play a few years ago, but he's really just a mediocre defender at best.

And for the record, his UZR numbers have been pretty bad for the past 5 years. Wouldn't exactly call them average.

When you're comparing cross generation, in most cases, it's really difficult to factor defense into the comparison. In terms of guys who have played the position their entire career, Honus Wagner, pretty clearly, is the greatest shortstop of all time. After that, I would say it's Derek Jeter, Arky Vaughn, Joe Cronin, and Ernie Banks in no particular order.

EDIT: As for your edit, that's a bit misleading, as he was close to average in 2008 and quite good in 2009.

By what standard though? I don't see anything that leads me to believe he was anything but a sub-par shortstop in the past five years. If you could explain to me what it is that's so misleading, I'd gladly listen, but I'll trust UZR over any other defensive stat, eight days a week.

You wouldn't happen to know when the list was put together would ya?

It was after A-rod had been moved to 3rd so 2004 or later.

2008 UZR/150: -0.7

2009 UZR/150: 8.4

Dave Concepcion was awesome defensively, great arm and range, solid at the plate, ran well, and was allegedly a big part of the team chemistry of those Big Red Machine rosters.

Honus Wagner.

Jeter isn't really in the conversation because of how often his defense ranks LAST out of qualifying SSs. It was unacceptable that he didn't move to 3B for A-Rod since that was clearly the best thing for the team.
