I think this is his last season in NY regardless, but it sounds like he's pretty ready to hang em up. Now, does he make the HOF?

A lot of people use the cliche that the HOF is not the Hall of Very Good. And Pettitte has been very good. But part of his greatness is attached to two things. His durability, which is unquestionable. And his track record. The guy has been in the league for 15 full seasons, with 2010 being his 16th. He's won 14 or more games in 12 of them. He is the all time leader in Post-season wins. He has been to 8 world series with 5 titles and has been an integral part in every one of them. I dont think he's a first ballot guy. But I do think that he is the face of Yankee pitching from the dynasty days and his track record gets him in eventually

NWIH should he go in the HOF. Very good, durable, and consistent pitcher. Pitched well in big games. But he never dominated. And he was a juicer.

But it was only that ONE TIME! :D

Seriously though, I'm not sure that he ends up making it in.

How can you exclude Pettitte from HoF for admitting to use HGH? A drug which the MLB doesn't test for. There's players in the game today that still use today because of that fact.

Pettitte is a real borderline case IMO when it comes to on field production. But as dumb as it may be, his admitted PED use is going to affect how the dumbass HOF voters view him. And most likely will keep him excluded from the Hall.

I've always respected Pettitte. I was probably 11 or 12 when he broke in. So he has been a big part of my "hay day" so to speak of baseball. My first memory of him, is the game he pitched in his rookie season I believe( a lot of weed since that day ;)) when it was snowing during the game he was pitching in.

To be honest, I'd exclude him from the HOF even if he didn't use PED's, so the fact that he admitted his usage doesn't change anything in my book.

Pitcher A:

216-146 (597 W%), 3,261 IP, 3.46 ERA, 3,116 K's, 1.13 WHIP, 4.38 SO/BB.

Pitcher B:

Assuming he throws 190 IP of 3.98 and wins 15 while losing 6 games ball with his career peripherals.

244-141 (.635 W%) 3,116 IP, 3.92 ERA, 2,308 K's, 1.36 WHIP, 2.33 SO/BB.

Pitcher A, who has better statistics than pitcher B, is a borderline HOF case, so pitcher B, regardless of his post-season accolades, seems like a very long shot. But stranger things have happened.

Is Pitcher A Schilling? Only Schilling and Pedro have K/BB that high with that amount of innings.

Pedro will, not positive on Schilling. He looks borderline to me, but i'm just a fan.

I think Schilling's got a great chance. His body of work puts him in the conversation, and then he's got a couple moments of postseason greatness to give him some Mazeroski points.

Not just the Bloody Sock either, although that's the big one. His last professional game being a World Series win doesn't hurt either, not to mention his penultimate game being an elimination game against Cleveland that he also won. Contributing in a major way to the postseason campaigns of the 2001 Diamondbacks, 2004 Sox and 2007 Sox all count well in his favor.

Pettitte may get some postseason points as well, but I just don't think Pettitte has anything in his history that matches the individual heroism of the Bloody Sock Game

His stats are borderline, but that iconic moment will put him in, IMO.

I love how people use "heroism" with baseball. Be serious.

I suppose being an integral starting pitcher on 8 world series teams and 5 world series champions isnt heroic enough? The guy's entire left hand is filled with rings. It's a wonder he can still throw

I'm sure that HGH helps.

He's going to re-retire after his comeback from...

At least he hasn't juiced or retired as many times as RaaJaa.

How many times was it specifically Pettitte's fault that the team got that far/won the Series. Probably a lot less than 8. Schilling was the man, or one of the two men, who carried a team in three different Series.

In the end, without regular-season dominance, his post-season resume is not of integral importance.

Robert Horry agrees. Think he'll make it to Springfield, MA?

I think that if Andy Pettitte gets into the HOF, then the flood gates will open with comparisons such as, "If Andy Pettitte got in, then (insert borderline player here) should get in as well"

Hence why it's the Hall OF Fame, not the Hall of the Very Good, or the Hall of Guys who helped a lot of Championship teams.

He was a backup/role player on a lot of championship teams, plus it's a different sport. Pettitte was one of if not the best starting pitcher on 5 championship teams and 8 world series teams.

Pettite was not the best pitcher on the Yankees on any of the Championships he was a participant of.

With Cone coming back from his aneurysm, I'd argue that Pettitte was the ace on the 1996 team.
