I'm getting more and more upset with Lowell. He himself admits that his hip has hampered his mobility yet still makes subtle comments about how he's upset with the Red Sox for replacing him and trying to unload him.

Look, I like Lowell as much as the next guy but at a certain point, he needs to be a bit more of a professional here.

Considering that for most of his tenure here Lowell has been a consummate professional, I'm not sure your statement here really holds any weight at all.

In fact if anything he's been a bit TOO professional. If he'd gotten the treatment he needed at the time of injury rather than trying to play through it for three months we might not be in this sitch with him.

Oh really? So I guess MDC is the poster boy for professionalism in your book then.

I'm not complaining about anything Lowell has done in the past but if the team feels like he's a liability at third and he himself admits that his hip and mobility isn't where he'd like it to be, then where does he get off complaining to the media that the team is trying to unload him?

Umm what? I just said that hiding or playing through an injury are the antithesis of professionalism. If you're drawing that conclusion from my post it's rather painfully obvious you did not read it very closely.

Because the team is trying to unload him, and has been for at least 4 years. He's been linked directly in a proposed trade to Colorado for Helton in the 2006-2007 offseason, a version of the Santana deal, and a proposed trade with Texas for Max Ramirez was even pronounced "done" before the Rangers backed out at the last minute over medical concerns. That's just the ones that made it to press, I imagine if you slipped truth serum into his agent's drink you could probably learn about at least 6-7 more.

That also leaves out all the Teixeira hubbub just last offseason. The Sox FO and Mike Lowell both knew exactly who the odd man out would be if we did land Tex.

I think he's entitled to say SOMETHING by now. Eventually you just get to the point where you need to say "Alright guys, get off the fence already -- trade me or don't, but stop almost trading me, k?"

You just said he was "TOO professional" for trying to play through the injury as opposed to getting treatment. Since when is "TOO professional" the same as "the antithesis of professionalism"?

How can you say they've been trying to unload him for 4 years when he signed a 3-year extension after 2007?!

And no, he isn't entitled to say something by now cause he'd be a Ranger if it wasn't for his goddamn thumb injury.

He should sit back, enjoy the $13 mil he'll be getting for popping sunflower seeds for the foreseeable future and accept the fact that he's a broken down walking (barely) medical case.

Ok now the Santana trade you had to be making s*** up haha. Johan was traded in the offseason after the 07 World Series... when Lowell was a free agent and signed a 3 year/$37.5 million deal

And Im sure if serum came out... it wouldnt only be about Lowell, the trades that never went down

Is Lester pissed at the Sox for him almost being traded to Texas in the A-Rod deal??

It doesn't even matter if Dojji is making up trade rumors. Why can't Lowell be like 95% of professional athletes and give a variation of "you can't worry about trade rumors cause they're always there, you just gotta go out and compete" when asked about trade rumors?

OK, I see the problem. The fact is that Lowell playing through the injury was too professional because he was trying to be an old fashioned gritty guy and you don't grit your way through a hip labrum tear.

Delcarmen's playing through his injury is NOT professional because of an important distinction -- he didn't report it to the team. Hiding an injury for any reason isn't professional, it's stupid.

Sure, and the "trade Lowell" talk began again in the very next offseason when Teixeira was a free agent. The desire to trade Lowell has been an undertone throughout his tenure in Boston, and you know that that's a fact.

I respect your opinion, but disagree with it. As a human being Lowell's entitled to the whole range of human emotions and on the whole I think he's taken the whole thing rather well, but anyone would get tired of waking up every morning for 4 years wondering who he's working for today.

I do think that Lowell has been classy in this situation. Far classier than Manny Ramirez or Nomar, and to be honest, I'd probably have the middle finger's up if everyone kept actively trying to trade me after I was the WS MVP. Granted, baseball is a business as much as it is a game, but there's a difference between looking for offers and getting rid of the guy as if he were the plague.

For his entire Boston tenure, that's been exactly what he was doing. In fact I believe that was exactly his line in the 2008-2009 offseason when we thought we might get Teixeira (and dump Lowell somewhere). Everyone has a breaking point, I guess.

Anywho, I don't really see his comments as that drastic. They're a bit more... resigned than you'd like, but I think considering that this guy has been involved in trade rumors literally every year since he got here that has to be understandable.

A little dramatic, no? How come Lester, Buchholz and Ellsbury didn't seem to have a problem being in ACTUAL Santana rumors?

How many plagues get a 3/39 deal at age 33?

All I'm saying here is I expect a guy who's 36 years old making a shitload of money to play a position he can't even play anymore to try and understand that the team he plays for is trying to win a WS title.

Help an old dude out here. What did Lowell say and when did he say it? I read all Sox related sports pages every day and somehow I missed what you guys saw.

It's essentially his unwillingness to embrace a bench role, which at this point in his career is probably his only role since he just can't play every day in the field. I understand his pride as a professional but I just wish he'd understand that he's a liability at 3rd.

Mike Lowell just fouled a ball off his left leg (or possibly left knee). He dropped to the ground immediately, clearly in a significant amount of pain. Trainer Mike Reinold and Terry Francona came out to see him, and he stayed down for a couple of minutes. He managed to walk off the field, supported on both sides, but had a major limp. Jorge Jimenez came in to pinch hit for Lowell, and promptly got hit by a pitch. A trainer came back out, but Jimenez appears to be fine. We'll get an update on Lowell as soon as we have one.

Well...you have a very expensive bench player. Welcome to the world of the Yankees. Unless you eat all but 1-2 million of his salary, he's yours for the year.

Look at it this way..by losing Lowell and Ortiz at the end of the year, you have the money to resign Josh and fight us over Carl Crawford.

trade value's going to be next to nothing' date=' might be forced to release him[/quote']

Are we really going to DFA the guy? Once he comes off the DL and accepts his backup role, he'll be able to get into games when the corner IF's need off days or if a lefty is on the mound and Ortiz is benched. If he plays good his value can be boosted and at least we will get something for him. What a mess this Lowell situaiton is

His trade value is BELOW nothing. No team will take him for free. It will COST the Red Sox to give him away.

Bruised left knee, disabled list to start the season is likely

That means Tug Hulett more than likely just made the team. He's earned it with his play on the field, there's an opening, and we could use at least one of the positions he plays.

Posted
Lowell should just retire now. Seriously. He's not going to get playing time here, he's going to be traded for basically nothing and probably not even play much on his new team. Just retire instead of spending the next few years occasionally batting DH for some .500 team.
