Adeinis Hechavarria, a righty shortstop who says he's 19 yrs old seems to be the big Yankee target. He hasnt been cleared to sign yet, but the Yankees have been watching him like a hawk. Hechavarria will be compared to recently signed sox SS Jose Iglesias but they do have their differences. Hechavarria has a better arm and is more of a total package athlete than Iglesias. But Iglesias is world better with the glove, leaving many to think that AH's future could be in CF a la BJ Upton. The Yankees are said to view him only as a SS though, and he is expected to need a few yrs of seasoning before being big league ready. He is expected to command at least what Iglesias got and probably into the 8 figure range due to his offensive potential. Should be fun to see. Hope we get him

Where'd you get the scouting report about him having a better arm and being more of a complete package than Iglesias? It doesn't say that in the NYT article.

They say he's 19 (that's the age I've been hearing associated with him), but in the article they say 21?

"The Yankees have been on him for a while," said a scout who saw the 21-year-old shortstop work out recently in the Dominican Republic.

I got the comparisons from Frankie Piliere on PP. He essentially said that AH has a stronger arm, is faster, and has a much better bat. Iglesias is worlds better with his glove both to the forehand and the backhand and he gets rid of the ball quicker and is more accurate from the SS position. Essentially, AH has more tools than Iglesias, but Iglesias is as polished as you can get defensively. We already kinda knew that. Piliere thinks he could stay at SS, but he does admit that his tools play out better in CF since his throwing motion is kinda long and the kid can fly.

Do you have a link or a quote? I can't find a scouting report other than the NYT one.

the only link I can offer is one to the pinstripesplus forum. Its subscriber only. You'll have to take my word for it. But I'm not really breaking any ground here. Once he officially signs, you'll see a lot more about him.

Can you quote what the person said then?

Asked around, and this is what i got:

CF playing at SS, muscular body (for his weight) refined bat that should develop power. Long throwing motion and inconsistent release point make him a lock to leave SS soon.

Thats about what I got. And for Imperial' date=' no you cannot cut and paste from PP. Right click is disabled. They dont f*** around.[/quote']

Can't you just type out what was said though? Seems kinda pointless to me.

Hey guys. Just noticed the chatter on here. Thought I could shed some light on Hechevarria.

I've been in touch with some evaluators that have been on him and the word I've gotten has that Iglesias is far and away the superior defender. This isn't a knock on Hechevarria, but a compliment to just how special scouts think Iglesias will be with the glove.

Also was told that it's not a given that he'll be a better hitter than Iglesias but his body and offensive upside is better. He won't move up as quickly but lots of potential. Also, he probably will not get what Iglesias got in terms of money but all it takes is one club to prefer him. If you'd like to see my original comments directly - I just tried to link but it won't let me.

Hoping to stay on top of the international market so stay tuned.

Here's what I said on twitter a few days ago:

Buzz on Cuban prospect Adeiny Hechevarria: "Chiseled body w/ a chance for the bat to play" says a top evaluator who recently saw him.

That should shed some light. I've been working on finding out more on him. He's interesting but probably more risk than Iglesias.

Welcome aboard, thanks for the insight! Don't be surprised if Jackson boils a rabbit in your kitchen, he seems to have a bit of a man-crush on you.

I'm not sure you're actually who you claim to be. But if you are, did you ever say anything about Hechevarria having a better arm or being more of a complete package than Iglesias, or did Jacksonian make that up?

Lol, I'm flattered that there's actually a risk of someone posing as me. Someone else made a comment about the range and arm on PP. I was told he had the upside to be a more total package long term. But, he's not as polished as Iglesias necessarily. The guys I talked to wouldn't pay him more than Iglesias and I found that the most interesting.

The people I spoke to in a lot of ways prefer Iglesias because the prevailing thought is that his glove is just that special. But the offensive upside of Hechevarria plus above average defense make him just as interesting.

So essentially, Hochevarria isn't really more of a complete package and he doesn't have a stronger arm, he just has a better bat. Is this correct?

Depends how you weight it. If he hits like some think he will you might take Hechevarria. I'd call it a situation of higher floor for Iglesias. Worst case scenario you have an absolute wizard at SS. Hechevarria's future hinges much more on the development of his bat.

Of course, we'll have to see how he looks once he gets to the US though.

ARod will be excited and want him to wear a blond wig and change his name to Madonna. Sorry, cheap shot.

Piliere gave you his view. Pat Teale over at PP says that the word he's hearing is that AH has better range, but the glove and hands arent even close. I am trying to find the guy who talked about his arm.

Here is another SR from Cuban Ball Players, talking about how Iglesias needed to play 2b when AH was around.

Hechevarria covers a lot of ground, has amazing quickness, great hands and his footwork is excellent.

Iglesias had a higher batting average in Cuba, but Hechevarria hit for more power and had a higher fielding average.

I can't find any batting stats for Hachevarria, can you?

All I know is that Iglesias hit .322/.356/.430 as an 18 year old for La Habana.

I dont have any stats on him' date=' I'll keep looking[/quote']

This is probably why:

Hechevarria, a right-handed hitter, did not play for the Cuban national team, but has competed on several prominent junior teams, according to the report. He's still very raw, but some believe that Hechevarria could be an even better prospect than Jose Iglesias, who signed a four-year, $8.25 million contract with the Red Sox in September.
