Beltre from 2008 wasnt as good as Lowell from 2009.

Really?

Adrian Beltre had a 109 OPS+ in 2008, while Lowell had a 106 OPS+ in 2009. You refuse to use the proper statistic or put things into context when it doesn't suit your argument, it's downright pathetic.

Also, Beltre was hurt in 2009 and we dont know if that shoulder is gonna be a chronic issue. It obviously sapped his power and it wasnt fixed. I dont think Beltre's yr was a down yr just by chance. He's better than those numbers. I think it was due to injury. It remains to be seen if he rehabbed through it or if it is still lingering

A simple google search reveals that Beltre had shoulder surgery in the final days of June. Please stop making s*** up.

Saying a dropoff from Bay to Ellsbury is just the same as Lowell to Beltre is plain asinine

I didnt mean to infer that it was the same. The dropoff is something that most people arent talking about. I am talking strictly offense here.

The dropoff is something that's been discussed multiple times. There's even a thread for it which I've referred you to but you've chosen not to post in it.

Yes I am too...

Beltre in 2008 hit 25 HRs/77 RBIs

71 games at home (.240 avg) (.303 obp) (.400 slg) (.703 ops) 10 HRs, 23 RBIs, 31 Runs, 24 Walks, 48 Ks, 3 for 4 SBs

72 games on road (.292 avg) (.349 obp) (.512 slg) (.862 ops) 15 HRs, 54 RBIs, 43 Runs, 26 Walks, 42 Ks, 5 for 6 SBs

Youre making it to seem like Beltre is going to put up the same 8 HRs/44RBI line he did this past season. I have no doubt he will hit up to 25 HRs and at least 75 RBIs

Have you ever stopped to wonder why you're the only one who mentioned any kind of a possible dropoff? You're not an idiot, if you take a moment to reflect I'm sure you could come up with something.

Scott Atchison and Joe Nelson? Wow' date=' the pen has fallen on hard times of late, eh?[/quote']

Ever since you touted Edwar Ramirez as the second coming of Moses, I've learned to disregard anything you have to say about a reliever.

Regardless, I think the sox pen being touted as a major strength is overblown.

That's the most shocking thing I've read on the Internet since Ricky Martin admitting he's gay.

It's still a better pen on paper than what the Yankees are sporting.

Paps, Okajima, Ramirez, Bard, Atchison, Nelson, Delcarmen

or

Rivera, Chamberlain, Marte, Robertson, Aceves, Park, Mitre.

Sorry BS21, I just dont see it

there's no need to be sorry for BS21 , we're all sorry for you

Joe Nelson and Atchison aren't going to close or setup, the Red Sox have 4 solid relievers in Bard, Paps, Ramirez and Okajima and possibly 5 depending how Delcarmen performs. Not many teams have at least 4 different relievers they'd feel comfortable having out there in the 8th inning.

Im not seeing how the bullpen is facing "hard times'. Sure it wont be as good as last year, but it still a top 5 bullpen at worst and I would be confident calling it the best.

Obviously Mitre, Robertson and Marte are superior pitchers, and Park will be able to get both righties and lefties out next year.

They're Yankees, after all.

Our bullpen will be fine. Papelbon, Bard, Okajima, Ramirez and Delcarmen make up one of the best cores of a bullpen in baseball. I expect Delcarmen to have a nice bounce back season if he's healthy. He was hurt last year but before that he had a 2.05 ERA, 1.02 WHIP in 2007, a 3.27 ERA, 1.12 WHIP in 2008.

Arguing over who has the better long man and mop up guy in March is kind of pointless. Both the Red Sox and the Yankees used 20+ different relievers over the course of last year. Half the time the first guy out of the pen is going to be someone called up from the minors.

Delcarmen is a huge question mark. He's supposed to be healthy, but his velocity is way down, and his curve and change don't have the bite they used to (per reports).
Posted
Both Marte and Delcarmen were solid relief pitchers the last time they were healthy. The question as to which bullpen is better will probably come down to which of them actually are healthy now.

Marte's every bit as much a question mark as Delcarmen. You can see that if you're unbiased of course.

Actually Marte is much more of a question mark. Delcarmen was effective as of halfway through last season, it's been a season and a half since Marte had anything

9.45 in 13.1 IP. last year, 5.40 ERA in 18.1 IP in 2008 (With Yanks). Obviously a sure thing.

I think we're in a better position with a question mark being our 5th best reliever out of the pen than our neighbors to the south are, with a question mark being one of their set up guys. And Chamberlain isn't the same pitcher he was in 2007 either. Ever since his shoulder injury in 2008, his velocity has been 3-4 mph slower, even as a reliever.
