Ortiz

Martinez

Cameron/Hermida

Beltre

Scutaro

I'd actually like drew in the three-hole, but i think Martinez stays put there. And Hermida will be the 4th OF, not Cameron's platoon partner.

Is this team as a whole better than the squad from last year, probably. Is the offense better. No, not by a long shot. A full year of V-Mart and less Varitek helps and Scutaro being the full time bat helps. But Beltre isn't a better hitter than Lowell, and there is a huge drop off in LF in terms of losing Bay and replacing him with Cameron. Cameron is the better OF, but that doesn't make him a better hitter, or even a wash. Its not even close. Ortiz is the wild card looking at this offense next year. If he can be a steady bat for the full year he can hit 32-35 home runs and be a force again. Or he could decline and hit only 20. Or he could be streaky like last year and hit 25.

The decline from Bay is made up by a full year of V-Mart and Scutaro. And next year, this is a team that will not have a black hole in the lineup, unlike last year, when it had two from C and SS. The offense could potentially be more consistent, and every sign points to Ortiz being consistent over the entire season. After he got going in June, he never looked back, there was no more inconsistency.

This year's offense is slightly above average AL offense.

Last year, the AL runs scored average was 781 runs. The Red Sox scored 872 runs. Unless you can justify the loss of Bay costing the Sox at least 50 runs even with a full year of V-Mart, a full year of Scutaro and of course, Mike Cameron, then this is a very above-average offense.

I say the Sox settle around the 830-850 runs scored range. Solidly above average.

I'd say that this year, the offense has potential to be possibly slightly better than last year's.

Gonzalez is replaced by Scutaro, and of course, Tek replaced by Martinez.

Lowell is replaced by Beltre, who could potentially have a big year in store, and I think Papi comes back nicely, and without the early season slump (I assume).

The offense is more complete, and I expect better-than-past seasons from Ortiz and Beltre, and Cameron could also benefit from Fenway pretty nicely.

With so much riding on RHH's who are monster-dependent, we might struggle on the road. I think we'll dominate at home though and that's the important part..

This is true though.

But the overall run production should come close to last year's. And we have an alternative in Hermida should Cameron struggle on the road.

We certainly will dominate at home, but I think our pitching can keep us in almost any game. We have a top-notch bullpen, as well as the best rotation in baseball.

Not wild about the bottom rung of said bullpen actually. I'd like to see if we can't get our hands on a veteran LHRP instead of leaning on Richardson.

Maybe we can dangle Kotchman for one?

With the Rotation the way it is being one of the best in league right now. I will take a slightly above average every day of the week.

The fact that it will be comfortably above average will be icing on the cake.

With this addition of Beltre, i am pleased with what we have.

My prediction:

850 runs scored, third in the AL behind the Yankees and Tampa.

694 runs allowed, second in the AL behind Seattle.

I think we have one of the best 1-2-3 pithcers in the league if not the best.

I think Seattle's 1-2, plus the benefit of the stadium will have them being the pitching staff that allows the least runs next year.

We definitely have the best rotation... And I don't know that I'd say Seattle has least runs allowed, their rotation drops off massively after Hernandez and Lee.

True, but the last three guys in the rotation are a huge drop off, so I could see them not being 1st in least runs allowed.

Of course Seattle will be amazing in least amount of runs allowed. But how many can they score? Where was seattle in RS last year.

Posted
My point was, actually, that I think the Red Sox be close in runs allowed differential. All they have is the duo of Lee and Hernandez. Even with the park factors or both teams.

Last with 640, but now they've added Chone Figgins and Milton Bradley. If they bring Branyan back, the offense should be much more potent.

With the Red Sox stellar rotation the bullpen will be improved.
