Phillies Acquire Halladay; Send Lee to Mariners

The Phillies are in agreement on a three-team trade with the Mariners and Blue Jays to acquire star pitcher Roy Halladay, SI.com has learned.

Sources say Halladay will agree to a contract extension to complete the deal.

The Mariners would wind up with Cliff Lee in the deal.

Wow...just heard this on WFAN. It's not official yet but apparently the Phils want to negotiate a deal with Halladay before officially agreeing to the deal.

I think the Phils should have tried to get Halladay WITHOUT trading Lee. Idk what there payrolld and budget situation looks like and if it would have been feasible, but a top 3 of Halladay, Lee, and Hamels would have been pretty nasty.

Halladay + Lee = guaranteed WS win for the Phillies. This seems like a straight up swap.

uhh....no. There's no Halladay+Lee, its Halladay at the expense of Lee.

Where did you hear it was a straight up swap, as all reports indicate Lee would be sent to the M's.

By all indications' date=' the Phils believe they were going to have a very hard time re-signing Lee[/quote']

He's already signed for 2010

I meant swap of talent, as in no tremendous gain to the team. I'd just heard rumors and discussion about Hamels being traded out for Halladay, which IMO would have been preferable to Lee.

Prospects that Philly gets in return for Lee.

I imagine it will be a package of the prospetcs they get from Seattle as well as some of their own.

They've agreed to send Halladay to Philly, Lee to Seattle and prospects to Toronto. The reason Lee is traded is because they couldn't agree to a long term deal with him. He just wasn't willing to take a discount to stay in Philadelphia. Now, either the Phillies believe Halladay is more likely to sign an extension, they'll be granted a window to talk with Halladay, or maybe they just thought since they'd have either one of them for one year, they might as well just trade for the better pitcher.

Oh I got you lol, my mistake. Yeah I agree, if they could have gotten this done with Hamels instead of Lee the Phils would have been NASTY!

Wow' date=' the Mariners now have an incredible top two. I guess there goes any chance of them trading Felix.[/quote']

Yeah, it looks like they're trying to win now, they signed Figgins, are interested in Bay and might have just acquired Lee.

The real winner of this deal IMHO is Seattle. I think they have to be considered legit contenders at this point.

Agreed. Without knowing the prospects that the Mariners gave up (one of Saunders and Triunfel will probably go to Seattle), they are looking to be a real threat this year. If I'm the Mariners I'd rather it be Triunfel, unless they can get Bay, then Saunders is expendable.

The Angels have just been hammered. Losing Figgins and Lackey, and watching Seattle grab Lee and Figgins. The Mariners are the faves at this point if you ask me.

Phillippe Aumont of the Mariners and outfielder Michael Taylor of the Phillies are among the players heading to Toronto in the trade.

I'd be surprised if the Mariners didn't give up more than that.

The Mariners are looking pretty good right now. But I still think they're short a few bats, especially if they don't re-sign Branyan.
