He would play in spots when needed- he would be better against lefties than Ortiz and he can be used when the corner IF's need a rest, don't get me wrong I would like to see the trade go through and get Rameriz, but Mike Lowell isn't garbage, the guy can still play.

Lowell to Texas is dead.

My bad...it was already posted.

Now you don't have a 3B for the beginning of the season. Good news for Yankee fans.

Is there more pressure to get Gonzalez now? How long will Lowell miss in the year? Can he actually come back to the Sox without there being feelings of animosity between him and the FO?

Dan Roach says 6-8 weeks.

I think it will be awfully tough. This is the third time he's almost been traded.

Last I checked Youk is a pretty damn good third basemen, and this really changed nothing because even if he went it was still Youk to 3rd and Kotchman to 1st with Lowell being injured and sharing DH duties mostly

That was nice of the Rangers to tell the Red Sox one of their players needed surgery. The question is why the Red Sox didn't know.

I'm guessing the trade goes through during ST after the thumb has healed. Funny how two Boston teams have had trouble with thumbs in the off-season.

I don't know how this affects their plans at 3B, but I think there's a chance Lowell might be serviceable at 3B if he can maintain or improve his September form. He can still hit and is a warrior. Maybe they can squeeze another year out of him. At $12 mil, it's worth a serious try.

Hurt feelings? Not at $12 mil. Besides, nobody seemed to know about the injury.

Is that starting now or for the beginning of the season

Lol at Gom for saying Sox dont have a 3rd baseman now... as its already been posted, Youk is a great defender at 3rd

6-8 weeks for an old 3B? I'd be surprised...

If you move Youk, you don't have a 1B worth s***. If you move Vmart to 1B, you don't have a catcher worth s***. You're short a player.

Moving Youk to third and playing Kotchman or a FA 1B was always the plan.

Wasn't this the same discussion that was going on when we thought Lowell was going?

Whats changed from earlier today to now?? Still short a player either way

Oh and psst its December, not f***ing April

Like it's been said' date=' I think the deal will go down in ST or when he proves he can play.[/quote']

Unless Texas goes in another direction before then. They may not wait.

If this was the case, then I was mistaken. Your plan was to keep Lowell on the bench? That's quite an expensive backup.

This f***s with the sox cap numbers, thats about it. If Boston paid $9 million towards Lowell's move to Texas, that $9 million doesnt hit their cap. As far as the cap is concerned, the sox would have no tie to Lowell at all. With him back in the fold, that means that the $12 mil hits their cap and potentially puts them over. I forsee another deal, but the sox might need to eat the whole thing to get rid of him.

Who said the plan all along was to keep Lowell on the bench??

Ok soo earlier before news broke that Lowell trade was off, you didnt realize it would be Youkilis and someone other than Lowell manning a corner?

Nope. I didn't think a team was dumb enough to take Lowell. I also didn't think that the Red Sox would want to spend that much money on getting a third baseman and carry Lowell on the bench. I figured they'd live with him for one year and wash themselves clean of him, like what the Yankees did with Giambi.

well the deal is off now that he needs surgery incase none of you have heard yet. article went up on the site at 11 30pm eastern. im glad hes staying. gives us a better hitter than beltre would be and a still great third baseman. but the talks are of trading for Gonzales down the road since hes stated since trade talks he DOES want to play in boston. should be an interesting second half of the upcoming season.

In all fairness, statistically speaking, it's not true that Lowell is a better hitter than Beltre, it's also not true that he's a great 3rd baseman, since he can barely play defense anymore.

Lowell .280/.343/.468

Beltre .270/.325/.453

It's not even debatable who the better hitter is.

Take a look at his Fenway stats.

In 56 AB's Rhet?

Really?

Take a look at his dolphin stadium stats then.

Do you think Beltre's Fenway stats, compiled over 3 to 4 game series, no more than two in any given year, and compiled over several years, have predictive value?

16 games over 11 full Major League seasons.

Seriously? You bring absolutely nothing to this site but persoanl bias. Any person with half a brain can look at those stats and comprehend they are "comparable". If you can't see that, then maybe a eye doctor appointment is in order...
